Appearance: a broad-shouldered, yet quite skinny man, only about one and a half meters tall. His face is quite long, and his eyes are narrow and brown. His hair is curly, long and unkempt, forming something a time traveler would recognize as a mullet and shiver in disgust (most others will simply not notice this detail, as hairstyles during the time tended to be generally abominable anyway). Mark: ... his Mark happens to be a jet black seven-pointed solid star right over his lips and his general mouth area, its edges reaching up to his eyes. If that wasn't enough, the black star glistens as if wet, unlike the rest of his skin, and its sheen has a slight purplish tone to it.
Personality: very excitable by nature, and rather jumpy, though that's more of a habit. Not very bright, and definitely finds highly educated, clever and cultured people suspicious. Nevertheless, he gives most people the benefit of the doubt, and has a natural bent toward kindness to those in need (as long as they're not sorcerers, witches, wizards, foreigners, beggars, suspected criminals or anything, obviously). Tries to stay away from most vices with varying degrees of success depending on the day, week and circumstances of the previous two.

History
Background: Kext was the youngest son of his family, and he and his two brothers Tves and Firg formed a classic fairy tale triad of sorts - Tves was known for his strength, Firg was known for his smarts, while Kext was not renowned for possessing much of either, and thus mostly went along with whatever his brothers decided to do, whether that be working with Tves, or engaging in thievery and various schemes with Firg, or just loafing around the fair town of Moodus and drinking with both. All three of them were commoners in every sense of the word, and mostly subsisted off their family farm and various secondary sources of income. Life, while not exactly good, was certainly passable for them, and Kext had lived in this world for twenty whole years before the fateful day that would change his life quite a bit.
Curse: One day, a rather nasty-looking witch was spotted touring the countryside doing gods-know-what - Tves and Firg immediately had ideas on what to do - Tves wished to rough her up and steal her stuff, maybe get a mob together if needed, while Firg wished to more subtly fleece her out of her things instead, as this witch did look like the sort who did not mess around, given how the ground under her feet tended to turn black and become unable to support life. Kext supported the second idea, given how it did not involve trying to beat up somebody who may have been death incarnate. So they found the witch out in the fields, and addressed her, offering her help in exploring the surrounding area. The witch only laughed, her voice fell and terrible, and said that she had no interest in such things. What she did have an interest in, however, was people - she wanted some, and was ready to provide magical goods beyond conventional imagination, including, but not limited to powerful slaves, interesting items and forbidden knowledge. After a short period of negotiating with Tves and the witch, Firg came to a very fine agreement - they would get three creatures of living ash, bound to serve them for all eternity, in return for Kext, who would have outlived his usefulness if they had three ash creatures anyway. Despite Kext's furious protests after he found out (of course, this was right after the bargain had been struck), the witch, with the assistance of Tves and Firg, subdued, tied up and took him into the woods, where the witch had set up a rather macabre ritual site - Tves and Firg were provided with their creatures, with which they left immediately, and Kext was left alone with the witch, who proceeded with a ritual far too horrid to speak of and branded him with a sign across his mouth to signify her annoyance with Kext's constant protests. The witch explained that this mark would forevermore mark him as a wizard, and that he, in all likelihood, had some rather interesting powers now.
Retreat: After Kext had been told of this, his first reaction was to flip out, which resulted in him decisively losing his very first magical duel. After he had been subdued once again, the witch told him that his old life was gone - now he, for better or worse, would be her apprentice while she researched his new abilities and get a fresh perspective on the emergence of magic in a non-gifted individual. And that's how the next five years of Kext's life were spent - practicing his abilities, understanding magic to an extent that his intellect would allow, and, of course, serving as a semi-loyal companion of the witch. And it all only came at the price of being largely isolated from society - not that society would want anything to do with Kext, anyway. This arrangement was rather good for him until a certain day when the witch met a rather shifty-looking group of people. They seemed to want something from her, but Kext didn't hear much, as the witch did not like it when Kext interfered when she was trying to speak to someone else. So he waited and waited, and it was only after the shifty-looking people told them to go with them that Kext realized that the witch had exchanged him for a group of three young girls, a handoff that put him smack-dab in the middle of some kind of task force sent to do something or other in a kingdom Kext had never even heard of.
