I'm pretty sure the Magical Girl genre is simply called the Magical Girl genre since that's all anyone I've heard call it. I've only heard Majou Shoujo when talking about Puella Magi (I know it's not grammatically correct, but that's the official name) so I'm guessing it's just a difference in lingual mystique as you call it.

Mahou Shoujo is the Japanese phrase and would refer to any eastern-animated magical girl.
Puella Magi would theoretically apply to roman magical girls. But now it basically is the in-universe term because Magical Girl is as stigmatized and "cliché" as "zombie"

Puella is basically the way of referring to Magical Girls the same way one would refer to Zombies as "Walkers" or "Draugr" or "Zed".  We're pretentious motherfuckers.

Actually, in the original japanese they call them Maho shoujo. Puella magi is a (Quite excelent) translation, done to try to keep
one of kyubey word games.

You launch yourself off the rooftop towards the Red streak, who drops towards the ground, bouncing through traffic as if it isn't even there.

Tsubey will clean up the front as far as the masquerade goes. A few forgotten memories here or there isn't too bad you suppose, so you follow, a flash of green racing after the red.

You spin and dodge through a forest of sedans, vans and semi-trucks, some parked and some not. It puts you uncomfortably in mind of the situation that forced you to make a wish, but...

You note with a start that you're a millisecond away from eating the grill of a giant dominos semi. You twist to the side, but it still clips you and sends you sprawling. You're up on your feet, already sensing for your gem - there!

You're still closer than you were before, but your soul gem is on the other side of the building in front of you, and moving away fast.
