Find a gun store in one of the surrounding towns and pawn off Person's gun and bullet as being antiques. If no gun store can be found, a pawn shop will do.

No, since Open Mics lack a formal entry process and encourage anyone to go up to the mic. The best you get is some recognition. For a more rewarding process I would recommend looking for a Poetry Slam.

Get gored by an elephant will do that. I encourage everyone who is in a situation as dire as Twinwolf's or even more so, to not give up until you are truly dead, because there is always that faint chance that even a dying character could get some points and manage to get an article which saves them from certain death.

look up upcoming poetry slam competitions  if there is no upcoming competition then begin work on a short story about Spanish conquistadors conquering/colonizing the moon and fighting aliens.
