dont get me wrong, the nanites made it possible. I mean, they can knit the tissue back together from the inside out.
Nothing says said nanites couldn't make a genetic copy, complete with memories.

Also, you have to consider something shade. He has died several hundred times, and watched his comrades do the same thousands more.
Any good memories were probably drowned in the massive pileup of bad ones, especially since it was one battle to the next with no breaks.
Chances are, he has no positive stimuli anymore.
he only has a survival drive.

Worse. He had a idea of it from the way others were acting, and when he couldn't feel it himself, his sane-ish chunk of his mind, the part that keeps him quiet out of combat, basically suffered a BSOD.

the spooky part is that it wasn't even scientific, he is MAGICALLY unable to feel emotion, since even a robot would go ghandi after tasting it.
