Yep. As I thought.

And yes, ITE is implying that ENG's nanomachines may or may not work on dead people if said dead people need a soul in order to not be dead people. Clearly, if they're only doing physical things to revive people, those people's life must consist entirely of physical/natural phenomena. Buuut if life is magical or supernatural or whatever, then we've got a problem, don't we?

Especially considering that Garnt is a character, that might be a decent debate.

In ENG's world, it might be easy to bring back people. In Yuki Yuna, for instance, all deaths are final. So how would the deaths work?

That might be true, but then he is used to working with humans/biological creatures. Undead/magical creatures all seem to be on their own levels, and if it comes down to someone's soul being ripped out of their body, well... most likely we are going to have zombies everywhere.

I figure it's on a universe by universe basis. Some people have souls, some people are just bundles of protein and DNA and all that other stuff.

Yep. IT's an interesting thought, isn't it?

And then we have D&D, where both souls and bringing people back on a semi-regular basis are a thing.

Ayup. But if you don't put the soul back in the body you get zombies in D&D.

Alternatively, people do have souls but work fine without them. How confusing!

I am going to say right now, that yes, ENG has a soul. It's just been warped by the conditions he's been through, And broken, and chipped at and held together with superglue and newspaper clippings.  It's more of a spark of intelligence at this point.

Alternatively, people's souls are a function of the integrity of their body.

Ayup. It's certainly not impossible for ENG to have a soul but get revived by nanomachines, son. For example, it could drift off when he dies and then return when the body comes back to life. Or at least, what's left of it. But on the other hand, what if it doesn't, or another soul gets there first? Opens up more possibilities still.

It probably is, but it's also possible that it works that way.

It works however you want it to work, so long as you decide on something and stick with it. :P

IF you're wondering, ITE is pretty much just soul. A lot of soul. So much soul that from the perspective of humans it's more than physical enough to snuggle. If that makes any sense. As far as she's concerned, the line between 'soul' and 'body' is thin at most.
