Break it down. Ignore the labels. Think. Is there really that much of a difference between Kinetic Shell and Parry Dodge Block? Both are effectively just something to mitigate damage to, merely one is Active, the other, Passive. So if it pierces one, it pierces the other.

Call it HP if you want, but Shielding isn't real HP, it's just another type of defense. It amounts to a supply of single-use RES bonuses beneath regular RES.

HP can be healed. Temp-RES cannot. HP is granted by stats. Temp-RES by Perks or Actions.

Something that is curiously missing from their sheets. As far as I can tell, you can reapply it, but Motya, Sandra, ENG, and Evridiki can heal neither a forcefield nor someone's parrying skills.

The very fact that HP is granted by a character's stats, with a fixed and definite limit (Max HP), rather than something that is granted from something else that does not count for that limit is enough to differentiate HP and Shielding in my opinion.

Tough, then. Emp has it right, more or less. Pure damage pierces ALL defense. Similarly, moves like Piercing Strike will trigger their secondary effects if Temp-HP is used to block their damage.

It is not healable.
It is not innately granted by the core system itself.
It does not count towards the HP limit.
It is possible to dispel it based on flavor.

Four nails in that coffin.
