[-]"Lets make Alphias proud, shall we? We'll make the Navy cower in fear! If any of you have doubt -- simply remember Blackport! Check your angles, calibrate the lines, and open the beacon. Let's send them all to whatever hell they deserve." You command into your communicator. Then, you focus...

[65][52][37]
Scattered throughout the vessel are small vials -- semi-organic relays, designed to keep your nanites alive for extended periods of time. You route your willpower through one, then another and another, stretching it further and further out, until it engulfs the ship.A complex spiderweb designed to amplify and spread it out. You route power from the engines, pushing it into an array at the bottom of the ship--

Expanding, folding, routing, until you no longer feel connected to your physical body -- no, you are the ship.

The Wings of Sol's Retribution, or, Retribution opens fire. Missiles sparkle as they fall to the planet below. Through your array, you can reach into them. You overexcited the hydrogen, sending it careening wildly with extra charge.

The impacts are visible from space. Hydrogen antimatter explodes out from the already critical shells, excited by your willpower's agitation. It spreads further, higher, deeper. The sheer amount of energy suddenly being released rips away the atmosphere in the region. Fire spreads out haphazardly as it burns, rippling like waves over a pond before the laws of thermodynamics can even recognize the trespass. It tears the earth asunder as continents rip themselves apart, and sends plumes of choking dust and ash into the sky.

You can do no more, and open your eyes to watch the lightshow. Blues and yellows burn into the VOID as the Megacity below is scoured by temperatures higher than most suns. And in the next instant, as if nothing ever happened, it goes out. The blue ocean is poisoned gray and black. The atmosphere is torn asunder. The multi-colored clouds are blacker than pitch.

Six billion have died in all but an instant. The other three billion inhabitants spread across the world will die in the next few days, this planet their ash-banked tomb. You watch, quietly, then -- "Send one of my probes."

It's a painful sacrifice, each eye you give to a probe -- but you want to ensure the job is done.

[-]The world below the ash-choked skies is ruined. Where the megacity once lay is now a jagged wound in the crust of the world. Ocean water pours into the gap. Steam and smoke rise into the air -- and you open your eye when the probe fails -- burning away.

"Put up a memorial beacon -- let all know our reasons. For Blackport. An eye for an eye. A tooth for a tooth. Tobias Hattlecut will suffer.  By Alphira Sol, Daughter of the Pirate King Alphias Sol, in charge of -- " you list your ship, then the three escorts in list of their rank or seniorit--

[13] Somebody jars you awake. "Your turn." Fred firmly states, extending the rifle your way. You take it with a nod, leaving to sit on the roof and meditate as the sun rises over the blasted land of ash and snow. Fresh tracks, like a Barker's foot, are nearby, you notice. The two corpses of the guards are both gone. The gate has been chewed on, in a place.

Follow the tracks, unless they lead away from the house.

+1 But we should alert the people here of what we see and also close the gate behind us.

I... imagine Fred would've told us if the beast in question was still here. We'd just be distracting ourselves from the vigil, trying to chase it down.

Oh right
Continue watching for any threats, such as Infected, bandits, barkers, etc.

[-] The tracks lead off into the distance, merging together into a single file line. But, you do not investigate further, settling yourself back down on the roof and waiting patiently for Fred to get enough sleep. Eight hours should be enough, and then you'll make your way back to Stormmont. You meditate, focusing on nothing and everything, mulling over your dream -- and over your feelings.

[-] You notice movement after a few hours. Barkers emerge from the ash and snow just past the gate, having burrowed into the earth. Tentacles twist out from their manes and patches of their body are lined with silver and gray metal. Red, baleful eyes, focus on you, dark and appraising.  Then they begin to pace back and forth, keeping well outside of the gate. One wanders back from the distance, following the path carved through the snow. It joins its siblings in its pacing. Ambushed foiled, they, with a single yip from the largest two, lope into the distance.

Eventually, Fred emerges from the house, looking up to you and giving a wave. "I've got breakfast ready." You hop down from the roof, landing gracefully, and pass his rifle back to him with a nod. He hesitates. "Uh...are--you good?"

"I'm fine, why?" You question, shaking out your coat before entering the house.

"That-- that was a three-story drop."

"Oh, yeah, I'm good." You grace him with a smile, stepping into the house and finding the bowl of nutrient gruel hot and steaming on the table. Fred has at least cleared the dishes from the previous night away. A nice touch, even if he just piled them up in the corner of the sink. You eat quietly and quickly, taking your fill. He doesn't hesitate to cook you more. There was even a pot on the stove already.

Between bites, you brief him on the Barkers. He looks concerned, but, after a nod, "I'll stay in the lower level. Ask your guards to knock five times, pause, count to five, and then knock five more times. That way we'll be safe. I got Tim to clean up your armor and clothes, by the way."

Time to head back?

Return the las-gun, take a look at fixing the gate, and then leave.

On with our armor, and away to Stormmont. T'was a pleasant surprise, to happen upon a friendly face or two in the wasteland!

You duck your head in a thankful bow, retiring once more to the grimy bathroom to change back into your charred underlay and armor. The backplate feels a little thin, that is, until you activate Lucille. The needles dig in and feast upon the nutrients and nanites your body produces. The feeling of fullness in your belly disappears. You emerge, and Fred and Tim wait for you in the entryway.  Shock blooms across their expressions as the armor shifts and adjusts itself to any minute changes in your form. It settles down, and you dip your head again.

"Thank you for your hospitality, Fredrick and Timothy Caltrop. A hover-craft will be here today to recover you."

"It was a pleasure." Both bow their heads, and Timothy rushes to open the door for you. You duck out, and, for once, the sun shines down on the blasted wasteland left by SEED's passing. You approach the broken gate, frowning to yourself.

You're no blacksmith, but --

[20][10][14]
Silicon is a brittle metal, but, if there's enough of it, that really doesn't matter. You erect a new wall, covering the gate in the shiny material and fortifying the crumbling brickwork that surrounds the mansion. It doesn't take long, only thirty minutes or so, to raise it by about ten feet and top it with savage spikes and jagged, hard to climb edges. It even has a deep trench around it, filled with savage spikes. The two Caltrop brothers look on in stunned silence.

[-] With their safety momentarily assured, you unfurl your wings and bask in both the comforting warmth they provide. The sun beams down, on your face, and a light wind blows. It's cold, cold enough that your wings are turning the snow around you into steam, but in this moment, you are quite comfortable.

There's a temptation here. What if I never return? What if I leave this war? Leave my so-called fate? Leave it all behind to soak in the sun. There are many villages that would no doubt honor me with great comfort. Would it be such a betrayal?

As if to answer yourself, you rise into the air and set off to Stormmont upon your wings of red and gold. The trip is quiet, and you soar over the lands of ash and melting snow. You keep your helmet off, tucking it into a crook in your arm as you feel the cold wind nipping at your face. It's in the early evening when you finally arrive at your Fortress, slipping into your quarters through your personal alcove in its armored defenses. No one is there to greet you as you drop to your bed and devour a nutrient cube from your stash.

You send a message to Zero, instructing him to send a squad and a hovercraft to the Caltrop Residence.

With your business done, you lay on your bed, and contemplate your next move.

To abandon those that you are sworn to protect is to bring dishonor upon the Line.  How can the sun escape the light?

Arrange for a war council tomorrow morning. It's time to strike back with all the ferocity we can muster.

You feel that call too, hm? The temptation to just-- fly away?
