((This, mainly:))

The next to take her essence. If no one does, and we decay to non-existence, then our instances die with her. Cadet branches become the Main, and our other instances live on. Poorer for the lack of Pheonix's will, of course

((Besides that, we know from Silas' experiments and Alphira's memories that Dust falls apart pretty quickly when separated from the body of an Ascended. Only question is, does an Ascended corpse decay similarly to that of a baseliner?))

((Ahh, thanks.  I had forgotten that.  Hopefully these people did something similar with these bodies.))

"They used fire as a weapon and a tool. The first lit a fire within the clans, and the other burned all who would not bow to him." The Elder answers levelly, and you glance to Rekhyt. He shrugs. "They were great warriors."

"What name did they go by?"

"Fire-Blooms-Flowers."

"...right. Do you know where they're buried? For pcommunion]?"

"In the wastes, perhaps? I do not know where -- no one does. Ages have passed since they perished. One was forgotten on accident. The other on purpose. There's another temple, to the north that may know." The elder explains, "The birthplace of the sacred fire. If you wish to commune there, I could seek to arrange a caravan."

"Let her pray by her fire, geezer." Rekhyt states bluntly, and you shoot him a dark look. The Elder looks annoyed, but gestures you over to the firepit, and you drag your eyes over the gold -- attracted by the shine and craftsmanship.

"Gods are made by man -- like a tool, goddess. Do not forget." Rekhyt draws close to whisper, "But the temples provide great wealth, resources and influence. Only fools spurn their favor -- and their blessing."

It might not be a bad idea to journey to that temple when we are done visiting this city.  That will give us extra legitimacy in these areas, more than we would get from an alliance alone.

Who needs an alliance when we can be their god, also a journey to that temple sounds like a thing we should do at some point.

We need an alliance because we need trade and currency

The elder bows his head as you and Rekhyt approach. Softly, he begins to speak, but, utilizing your skills from many, many religious services, you filter out the rote and routine. The thanks offered to you, and to 'the godhead of man' barely register, but it isn't until the final line do you catch something that draws you from your religion-imposed stupor --

"...from dust and ashes I have called you, and to dust and ash you shall return." With that, the elder bows his head to you. Your expression twists beneath the mask, but you give him a slight bow in return. Rekhyt made no pretense of paying attention -- he's teasing the young priest by picking at the young man's robes and pen. At one point, he nudges him, causing the priest's pen to skip across the paper.

"Khudal." You murmur, trying to sound stern.

[4] The masked man twists his head towards you. He raises a finger in a universal, very human sign.

"Khudal does what he does -- there's no stopping it, Ochadi."

"Could you please schedule such a caravan within a week or so?" You question, glancing away from the prince playing fool.

"Of course." The elder nods, crossing his hands. The young man turns to leave, stepping over Rekhyt's outstretched foot. "Return here tomorrow night, and we will tell you when such a caravan will leave. I'm thankful you wish to recognized so soon by your people." Then, after a pause, and after you turn to leave, he stops you. "If you would wait -- the youth is bringing the brand, but it only has access to our local bank."

The facts are the important pieces, filtering out the non-facts allows for better comprehension

Alphias said the same thing.  An Ascended must have come here, long ago.
