Orbital Disobedience: MSF Thread / Prelim Turn 2 Strategy
« on: September 04, 2020, 07:12:50 pm »

Welcome, you brave and noble few, to the Malachian Security Forces.
Core Thread

You will be fighting against Syndicate activities and aggression in an effort to pry them from The Deregulated Zone in order to ensure stability is retained and our old benefactors don't abandon us completely. One step at a time though! If we're going to be kicking those backstabbing  assholes out of Malach Point and off our rock, we're going to need people properly trained to do so.

During this first turn you will be forming the first two squads and their commanders that The Syndicate will be deploying. Here's how it works, and I'll provide a template you can use if you wish. If you don't though, and if you want to, say, write something more akin to a lore piece, just make sure all the important info is in there!

Squad Name: Self-explanatory, I hope.
Race Makeup: Malachian, Earthbound, or Integrated, affects tactics and effectiveness in different environments, as well as having some influence on effectiveness in Overt vs Covert Ops. Note that at the moment you only have access to Malachians, as you have not yet captured territory in The Deregulated Zone. This is mostly here just as a placeholder for when you have choices.
Commander Name: Also self-explanatory, I hope.
Commander Details: This is where you lump together all the important shit that could affect how the Commander runs the squad. Personal beliefs, background pre-MSF, training, education, preferred tactics, childhood traumas...just about anything that you can think of that could describe the Commander and have some sway on things.

The first two squads designed by each team will be balanced against one another and set the foundation for the difficulty scale for creation of squads in later actions. Note that this does not mean if both sides go insane with their squad creation that all four will be easier to do and break the difficulty curve for the remainder of the game - they will instead all be hammered with a high difficulty while I laugh at your attempt to cheese the system.

And finally, remember that this is set in some sort of dystopian cyberpunk space opera with a touch of environmental apocalypse a la Mad Max, so flavor it up with whatever you think would be appropriate!

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, ask Twinwolf since this is essentially a modified version of her commanders, except also don't, I'm kidding, just ask me.

Squad Name: Roland's Rapiers
Race Makeup: Malachian
Commander Name: Roland Eikenboom
Commander Details: Roland Eikenboom is a representation of all of the worst aspects of Malachi and all of its most successful in one terrifying, charismatic, blond package.

Roland was essentially born into Command, and it shows. Roland is the son of Pieter Eikenboom, an Admiral in the OSEA Navy who had been given command on Malach Point for three things -- his passion, his ideology, and his competence. Pieter had been a man who had been lit up with an energy that seemed to suffuse his entire being, throwing his best into every single goal he had to reach and striving his damnedest alongside everybody else with every directive he gave. He'd been an ideologue, striving with every moment to go turn mankind's gaze outwards, to aid and assist expeditions out into the deep black. And he'd been a man of talent, too, who seemed to be able to pull off damn near to everything that he tried himself.

Well, at least up until the war between OSEA and MRI, where he proved to be as human as everybody else and was horrifically mangled. At that point, he withdrew from Malach Point, staying in private life in OSEA territory. Roland Eikenboom, however, had not. Roland had been an impressive but somewhat concerning child, inevitably surging to the top of whatever classification or group he was placed into... and sparing little mind indeed for the less impressive around him. As a teenager he'd showed himself to have an insatiable ambition but also to have the drive to fulfill that ambition -- he kept himself busy with a full course of education, combat training, and time spent around the various bigwigs and officers of Command, talented in each. His education he devoured, his combat training he excelled at, and Command he grew very chummy with indeed.

So as an adult he'd been ingratiating himself into an increasingly militarized wing of the Command section, a group of increasingly paramilitary command officers, growing in prestige and notoriety, when the war broke out... and when his father left, Roland had already had far too much success to even consider leaving for a moment. His little wing of Command expanded, becoming a core part of the Malachian Security Forces, and Roland rapidly found himself a place of prominence as a Squad Commander.

When it comes down to it, Roland's Rapiers are all about Roland -- he is the point of the thrust, but he's also the one holding the sword. The way he commands is designed to allow himself to do things god damned well himself, and at all times, for he inherited his father's talent and passion, though not his ideology. In combat, Roland takes the front line and the most expensive equipment and tears a bloody hole in the opposition, with his squad supporting him and keeping him from being caught out. Out of combat, Roland relies on his incredible personal charisma to sway and woo the people of the places he goes, his raw presence a titanic enough one that he fills rooms and his name stays on people's lips.

However, the downside that comes from almost certainly being some manner of sociopath is that Roland doesn't actually understand people very well, and so trying to fulfill the needs of others, or operating off of genuinely even communication and trust-based coordination is rather foreign to him. It's not that he's cartoonishly evil and kicks dogs for fun, but it is that his number one priority at any moment whatsoever is always, always going to be Roland.

The Postal Collective
Squad Leader: Shepard Germain
Race Makeup: Malachian
Commander Details:

Cargo and Shipping is a major part of Malachian industry - and Shepard Germain is the center of it all. Or at least *was* until management scapegoated him for a dock collision caused by corporate bickering. Tired and fed up of all the bullshit infighting threatening his home and life's work, Shepard got a group of like-minded shipping workers to secure and protect the station, reporting as an Emergency Response Team. Nobody would get through his airlocks, especially not the syndicate. The group started out inspecting shipments purely station side, but after several contraband crates exploded ain transit, he petitioned to be let planetside to help prevent further incidents. The station was the lifeline to humanity, and he was not about to let it fall. He uses a very data-based investigative approach, and is an expert in detecting anomalous patterns and outliers, though he never was very good in social situations. While the station side approach focuses mainly on customs duty and preventing smugglers, the planetside operations consistent mainly of surveillance and contraband interdiction.

Squad Name: The Celtic Crew
Race Makeup: Malachian
Commander Name: Erin Byrne
Commander Details: As one of many scions to a trillion dollar tech company, Erin was pretty much guaranteed an easy life, and if she particularly desired a purpose there were myriad options for someone with her impressive college credits within the business. That was not, however, a future that particularly appealed to her. Instead, she wanted to feel like she was actually doing something with her life rather than being another gilded cog.

So she joined the Malachian Security Forces as an Officer, and was quickly deployed to the surface, first guarding critical infrastructure from sabotage and then leading a small team to root out and exterminate insurgents. Whilst this sometimes involved kicking down doors and taking names, it mostly consisted of incredibly tedious investigations, wiretapping, tailing suspects, interrogating witnesses and convincing Earthbound scum to sell out their friends and family.

This required a very controlled approach, as a bunch of Malachians sniffing around was obviously going to set off alarm bells. Thankfully, Erin was the ideal candidate, able to delegate the right tasks to the right team members, collate reports and extract useful intel and then deliver decisive force exactly when it was needed. Charming, charismatic and actually capable of empathy :'(, she wasn't afraid of a shoot out when it was necessary, but her talents lent themselves well to moving under the surface and working within existing structures rather than blowing hold in them.

Squad Name: Special, Unorthodox, and Irregular Tactics Squad
Race Makeup: Malachian
Commander Name: Michael Price
Commander Details: Because the surface of Earth is basically a lawless wasteland, sometimes the Station's various interests, support structures, and customers require help. Sometimes this help requires a modest amount of firepower. Sometimes a modest amount of firepower isn't enough, and the help calls in additional help, which a much more immodest amount of firepower. That is what the SUITS group is for. See, on the station, "normal" tactics and "regular" operational restrictions require highly limited use of weapons and other devices that could conceivably damage the station. Explosives, high speed projectiles (i.e., anything faster than a particularly vigorously shot blowdart), vehicles, none of them are really usable for combat inside the station. On the surface, though? It's all a wasteland anyway! The SUITS group is therefore deployed to situations where a thoroughly nonstandard and anything-but-safe approach is called for.

Their present leader, who has remarkably not yet lost any bits to poor explosives safety is [name here], who exemplifies everything that makes the SUITS group special. [leader] has muscles on their muscles, carries a really big gun and a whole lot of grenades, and wears their nearly-identical black suit and body armor combo that defines the unit.

By the way, did we mention that their defining trait is always wearing formal attire? We're not really sure why that is, but they do it. What's more, under the suits they wear body armor, so the total effect masks physical differences, making individual members very hard to pick out. Also, did you know that somebody makes formal attire in "Space Station White", "Cargo Bay Stain Brown", "Grease Monkey Grey", and "Wasteland Disruptive Camouflage"? Who this heinous villain is, we have not yet managed to discover.

Name open to change because it's just kinda lame.

I prefer the Musketeers' less comedic operating scheme and generally less cargo-focused description but at the same time cannot support so many Elon Musk jokes.

I would be really happy to support the Musketeers if they wouldn't completely shatter my immersion every time they came up, because I like the squad itself, but they will destroy my immersion, so...
