The group walks along the road a bit further without incident, but they notice a patch of mismatched dirt where it looks like something was buried on the side of the road.

Yay! Okay, I checked and I was with Manfred hiding from knights with no obvious isignia and a prisoner. I keep hiding but try to see if there is any marks on the prisoner that tells me who his allegiance is toward. And I try to see what the knights have equiped.

Pretty much.  If I had some more armor, and there wasn't certain death with any combat, I'd be more inclined to take on sidequests.  Of course, I suppose this keeps things realistic; two guys with a hodgepodge of gear would not go after three fully armed and armored knights on horseback.
