Working on a new assignment now. The theme is supposed to be "deadly jungle gym". I decided to make it a little medieval.

Spoiler: colour, may burn eyes (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: no colour (click to show/hide)

Nice. The random planking combined with stonework gives me a significant Undead Burg feel.

If you have the polygons available, a lot of it would look better for being a bit smoother, in my opinion.

Edit:

Any criticisms that aren't on anatomy welcome. I'm well aware that there are a few oddities as to how this poor sod actually fits into his armour. :P

The armors toe looks like its bending left, not down, which is a little strange

I think you mean 'right' if we're talking from the person's view :P But that's me being silly.

Though personally, it looks just as predicted given the lighting. A bit of adjustment from the lighting onto the foot would help, and that TINY curve right behind the left (from the knight-person) kneecap of the hip makes it seem like the thigh is a bit out of place :O

Spoiler: Eh, finished (click to show/hide)

Yes, I know there's an empty corner there. :P

As before, criticism welcome. Thank you, Dorsi and Tiru, I tweaked the foot a bit and I think it does look better.

Edit: sod, I just realised that my careless choice of background arrangement makes the entire thing angled in a vaguely motion sickness-inducing way. Ugh.

Yea, I was just about to mention the background.

The armour though is brilliant. Very nice shading.

That just serves to illustrate the sickening, disorienting effect of the Undead Curse, right? :P

Cannot into anatomy. Also, again, I would very much appreciate feedback on my animusic. That was genuinely a huge thing for me and I've yet to get feedback from anywhere I've spammed it.

When the balls bounce onto the pinball surface it doesn't look like they've arrived there naturally. It looks like after they hit the bouncing surfaces that they're just kind of yanked there by some invisible force, rather than arcing ballistically like you'd expect. When they actually slide down towards the bumpers they seem to accelerate instantly as well. Maybe you could make them get up to speed a little more slowly? Even though real pinballs in pinball machines actually move pretty fast, when you're animating you might make things move a little more slowly than they really would to give the audience a chance to appreciate what's happening on the screen.

Looking forward to seeing more 3D stuff.

Thanks for replying.

I had been toying around with the animation graph editor in every way I could think of, but I haven't been able to fully smooth out the curve of the ball paths. It seems too angular, or yanking, as you said.

I will keep acceleration in mind in the future though.

Double-poop, and a spoop.

imgur makes for terrible quality, and attempts to smooth the castle were met with ruin:

I think it's done now anyways. The teacher is a bit vague on what he wants for this assignment, though.

If smoothing attempts end up like this I guess you should check the mesh for irregularities. like inverted normals and disconnected faces.

Other than a few things like the bell and the slide, nothing has been warped beyond basic scaling. The smoothing system in Maya just seems to be incredibly zealous whenever I try it.

But shouldn't be smoothing leave the mesh topology unchanged? I mean, it seems like smoothing introduced holes, which can mean one of two things:
1. Smoothing doesn't preserve mesh topology, which seems kind of a really damn giant blunder for professional 3D software
2. The holes were there before, but not visible.
Or, more specifically: For smoothing to work right, you'd need to stitch all the disconnected parts of the castle together, so it becomes one continuous mesh.

Can't just merge it all, unfortunately. Teacher said that the junglegym has to be modular, with any part being capable of being removed.

He also said that even though it should be like a junglegym, it should be nothing like a junglegym. It should also be for children, but not for children because if they played there they would die. It should also be like a level in a videogame, but not like a level.

It's left the class rather confused. But the teacher likes what I've done so far, so that's okay. Only complaints were the rope not looking enough like rope, the bell not looking enough like a bell, and the range of colours should be much wider. I've addressed that all as much as I could.

Can you selectively smooth? The main things that'd look better for a bit of rounding are the bell, the ropes, the chains, and the metal bars, just because those things are naturally smoother.
