Roll To Dodge / Star Brick: Green Swirly Thing IN SPAAAAACE!
« on: September 11, 2014, 10:07:36 pm »
STAR BRICK

She once completed the Khrelan Spice Run in twelve parsecs (any merchant vessel constructed by the Imperial Sol Shipyards in the last century could make the necessary jumps in nine.)

Captains who see her come onto their viewscreen suddenly recall old tales of ghost ships, for a vessel this outdated surely must be a castaway from another time.

She once evaded an avaricious Tensarian scrap raider by powering down and pretending to be a worthless pile of debris; it did not take very much pretending.

She is the most miserable salvage sow in the Outer Rim, an alien hull patched and repaired beyond recognition, eternally wandering deep space far from anywhere anyone would choose to live. Her systems are the hodgepode product of a dozen races, with any given subsystem at least three generations out of date. Her engines are inefficient and take ages to spin up for a Deep Space Jump. Her gravity systems flicker at inconvenient times, usually just as you're about to sit in the loo. She doesn't even have a proper shipboard AI to run things, though most of the systems on board do have a generous degree of juryrigged automation. She'd fail any inspection she would be subjected to if she was taken inward, towards civilization and easy living.

She has no official registry, not with the Sol Imperium, not with the Aelyrai Caliphate, not even with the Ca'lal Republic or any number of lesser galactic powers. Her name is etched in one small corner of her tattered, battered hull, worn and weathered by plasma storms and meteoric impacts, but still legible. She is the Star Brick, and the only reason she still sails the void is because some people have nowhere better to go.

People like you.

The Star Brick scrabbles endlessly on the fringes of society, scrapping derelicts, mining abandoned asteroid fields, and dodging raiders and pirates and Aelyrain patrols while trying to find anything that can be turned into credits so you can to buy the fuel to do it all again. Because at the end of the day, living still beats dying.

The bombs have dropped.

Fortunately, you are outside the immediate blast zone, saving you from a fate of being instantly vaporized.

Unfortunately, you are in the second, wider zone of people who have received a crazy lethal dose of radiation poisoning.

WHUPS

You don't know much about the exciting new physiological changes in store for you, but you DO know that you probably have like 10 turns to live. What do?

Roll To Dodge / Winter on the Mountain: Round 2
« on: December 11, 2013, 10:29:32 pm »
Winter on the Mountain
Originally by Harry Baldman on Roller's Block, developed by Monk12

High in the mountains lies an alpine resort- its name changes every time a new company purchases the property, but the locals refer to it as the Mansion. During the summer, it is a popular retreat for wealthy individuals and corporate groups seeking to escape the heat on the coast. During the winter, however, the Mansion lies empty, cut off from civilization by heavy snowfalls that arrive early and linger late.

Empty except for the caretaker, that is.

During the winter, the property is maintained by a man who appreciates the solitude and ample free time afforded him- his main responsibilities are to prevent and minimize damage that can occur during the harsh mountain storms. Unfortunately, it seems that the isolation drove him mad in the end, and he killed himself in a spectacularly gory way. The locals whisper that the Mansion is cursed, but the psychologists agree that Man, as a social being, is simply not meant to be so isolated, especially not in this modern era of social networking.

Acting on the recommendations of those psychologists, the Weatherford Group (a wealthy investment company and current owner of the Mansion) selected a new caretaker with one important criterion added to the job description: The caretaker must be a family man willing to bring his loved ones with him for the winter. A small, nuclear family should provide plenty of social interaction to maintain the mental health of the caretaker; the psychologists say so.

With the generous pay and free access to the Mansion's facilities, what family would pass up a nice winter vacation in the mountains?

Spoiler: Characters (click to show/hide)

Character applications are not first come first served. Characters are selected based on how well the application is written (e.g spelling & grammar,) how interesting the character concept is, and how well that character works with the rest of the family. The characters will not change once selected, though a small waitlist will be kept in case of terminally delinquent players. Once begun, I'm aiming for an update every 2 days, so be sure to post an action before the 48 hour mark.

Creative Projects / Plan Bee: monk12 has a webcomic now?
« on: October 17, 2013, 01:32:58 pm »

Updates Intermittently

So a few months ago, a friend of mine started talking about the webcomic he wanted to create, and he asked if I would be interested in doing the writing. Pretty soon we had a zany Judge Dredd meets A Bugs Life conspiracy Noir "dakka dakka" action thriller thing planned out, ideas were bounced around, concept sketches were made, and now I'm the writer for a webcomic that exists somewhere other than my own head.

But yeah, if you like stories about bugs with guns, grim dystopias, convoluted conspiracies, and reasonably frequent explsions, you might want to check it out. The first page is here, and we're shooting for Friday updates. The first page also has our first explosion, so it can't be all bad, right?

Comments, Criticisms, Suggestions welcome and appreciated!

General Discussion / Bee and Puppycat Kickstarter- Funded!
« on: October 15, 2013, 08:31:02 pm »
As the title says, Cartoon Hangover's hit cartoon Bee and Puppycat has a Kickstarter to produce a television-quality show. They're asking $600k to make six six-minute episodes, with their biggest stretch goal being a cool 1 million to make 11 episodes (plus, y'know, send out all the rewards.)

If you don't know what Bee and Puppycat is, take ten minutes and watch the pilot. It's trippy, and I love it. It's created by Natasha Allegri, whose claim to fame is as a character designer and a "storyboard revisionist" (whatever that is) on Adventure Time, and the genderbender Fionna and Cake episodes are based on her work. But, come on, if you're still thinking about it go listen to Puppycat's Fairy Tale again. I want a better ending, dammit!

The Kickstarter is already at $118k and only started today, so it seems quite likely that they'll meet the original goal. I myself decided I was rich and kicked in at the $50 level, which gets me a physical DVD of the episodes along with the digital downloads, soundtrack, and a bunch of other crap I don't care about.

And since there is no other Bee and Puppycat thread AFAIK, I'm just gonna leave this here on my way out. Repeat counter is on 321 for me.

HISTORY OF
[INSERT WORLD NAME HERE]
A Microscope Game

The gods create a new world protected from the ravages of Primordial Chaos

Magitek is in: This encompasses the idea that modern-to-future levels of technology are acceptable, and that magic and technology can work in harmony.

Magic is powerful, but expensive and dangerous to everyone: When it comes to magic, sacrifice and equivalent exchange should be major aesthetics. Humans are among (if not the) least magically skilled creatures.

Humans are the most important race in the world: Monstrous races can exist, but they are neither as numerous nor as powerful as the human civilizations.

Timeline

-Creation  The gods separate themselves from the rest of the universe, creating their own world.
--The Twelve Gods create Liros the Blue Moon  Liros is the dwelling place of the Twelve Gods, and it orbits the world. Each deity has a broad Domain of their very own upon the surface of Liros, and deep within the moon is a grand meeting hall where the Twelve can meet to enjoy one another's company, discuss their Creation, and anything else they please. As Liros orbits the world, it also rotates, presenting a different Domain of the Gods to the world every night.
-Twilight of the Gods  The gods fade away, their energies diffused into their own Creation.

HISTORY OF
[INSERT WORLD NAME HERE]
A Microscope Game

Microscope is a game about worldbuilding. Not in the literal sense, as the players do not take the roles of gods or anything like that; rather, the players work to create a rich and detailed history of the world, building off of ideas and concepts introduced (and/or modified) by the other players. It is, essentially, an exercise in creative writing and roleplaying.

Microscope describes itself as a "fractal game." That is because the game works by adjusting the focus in and out as the players see fit. The game starts with the beginning and ending of the history already known; the bits in between are filled by establishing new facts about the world that do not contradict existing facts, and then exploring the implications and consequences of those facts. Essentially, the game is one long answer to the question of "What is this world?"

Everyone is equal as far as creative authority goes; there are very few rules about what you can and can't write, but everyone is an equal participant, and nobody has any precedence when it comes to any particular aspect of the game. Nobody owns anything. A character, a god, a city, a secret society; they are all tools to be used by every player, regardless of who introduced them to the game. Technically speaking, there isn't even a GM; I'll be something like First among Equals since I'm the one who owns a copy of the rules (and I'm the guy who'll perform general thread maintenance,) but when it comes to actually playing the game I have no more or less power than anyone else.

Spoiler: How the game is played (click to show/hide)

So let's play a new game! Since I'm the one introducing the game, I'm gonna be a jerk and unilaterally decide the first two steps of starting a new game. The first step is to come up with a simple overview of the history we're going to create, a single sentence that encompasses all of creation. The Big Picture.

The gods create a new world protected from the ravages of Primordial Chaos

The second step is to create Bookends; the very first Period in the game, and the very last Period. The beginning and the ending of the story. All other Periods will occur somewhere between these two Periods. For organizational purposes, I'll be putting one dash before Periods, two dashes before Events, and three before Scenes. I'll also be bolding the titles of new Periods and Events, to make them easy to pick out. As the timeline gets filled out, the Periods and Events that are well defined can be shortened to just their title.

-Creation  The gods separate themselves from the rest of the universe, creating their own world.
-Twilight of the Gods  The gods fade away, their energies diffused into their own Creation.

There! Now we have an idea of how everything starts, and how it will all end. The specifics, and everything in between, are yet to be created!

The next step is to create a Palette. A Palette is a collection of things that every player agrees to abide by in the course of the game. Essentially, it's a list of things exceptions; things we definitely want in the game that wouldn't necessarily be expected of the setting (if we really want Steampunk to be a thing in this world, for example,) or things we definitely don't want in the game that you think other players might want (if you really don't want gunpowder technology, for example.) Note that if you want something in the game, and everyone is alright with it, it still doesn't exist in game until a Period, Event, or Scene occurs that describes it. If the Steampunk example passed, for example, there would still need to be an Event to mark the beginning of those shenanigans.

This game will hold no more than six players at a time. Or, in other words, I'm looking for up to five more players to join me. There will be a waitlist in case a player drops out before the other players are done with the game. If you're interested in playing, just make a post saying so along with any Palette choices you'd like to make. Feel free to debate or negotiate with other players' Palettes; we can't start until everyone is happy with everything that will be going into the game.

For my own Palette choices...

Magic should be powerful, but rare. Magic should be a big deal, and I'd rather not have a world like Harry Potter, Xanth, or 3.5 Dungeons and Dragons where everyone and their uncle uses magic to clean their unmentionables and slay their orcs. More Sword, less Sorcery, such that in a big battle each side might field tens of thousands of soldiers, but only half a dozen magic users, if that. Of course, those half dozen mages will be doing crazy things like generating tornadoes or earthquakes or whatever; they're not irrelevant, just not numerous.

No alien races. By that, I mean I'd rather not stray too far from the "regular" cast of fantasy races. Cosmetic changes and unique spins on the elves or dwarves is fine (and quite welcome!) as is inclusion of some of the less common races like kitsunes or gnolls or whatever, but I don't want to have crazy unique Mary Sue races in the game. No psionic starfish people with invisibility abilities, or stuff like that. If they're hard to relate to, they're not appropriate for this game IMO. Cool monsters, yes, whole civilizations of them, no.

From here on, this thread will be used for OOC rules discussion. All content posts are to be placed in the game thread.

DF General Discussion / DF Tutorial Stream Thingy
« on: April 16, 2013, 12:37:58 am »
After talking with a buddy of mine about how we can't get more of our mutual friends into DF (in small part because they don't live near enough to talk over their shoulder) we decided to do a livestream of DF, with the intent of explaining everything that's going on and hopefully making the game easier to get into. And since we're doing it for a few of our friends, we figured we may as well announce our intentions to the world at large.

Thursday, April 18, 2013, 7:30pm EST, my friend and I will be streaming on http://www.twitch.tv/bowdown2q. You don't need to make an account on the site to watch, but you will if you want to comment. We'll also have a reddit thread I'll point to when the time comes. If you've got a friend who's been debating whether to try DF, or if you just want to watch us make fools of ourselves, tune in!

Beyond that announcement, I'm also open to any suggestions you may have about this endeavor!

The Bay12 FUMBBL League is, as you may have inferred, a FUMBBL League for the Bay12 community. If you aren't aware of FUMBBL, it's a free, online version of the Games Workshop tabletop game Blood Bowl. If you're unaware of Bloodbowl, it plays like a turn-based mashup of the NFL and Warhammer.  In this league, teams will play a regular season (a simple round robin tournament) after which the top players will participate in a playoff series to determine a league champion for the season.

Signups for Season Four are currently open, so head to the back of the thread and sign up!

Although FUMBBL is free, you do need a few things before joining the league:

-An account on the FUMBBL site. It's free, and the site is responsible for rolling all your dice. It's also maybe not the most intuitive thing on the planet; hovering over the tabs at the top reveals even-more-tabs (took me a bit to figure it out,) and the New Coach Guide can be found here.

-Java, which is what the site uses to do... everything. Also free, though you probably already know what Java is.

-Basic knowledge of the Blood Bowl rules. Free in pdf form from Games Workshop here, along with some handy strategy articles. There's plenty of resources available for learning or re-learning the game (some of which are in the Helpful Links spoiler below,) and you can always ask for help or advice in this thread or via pm (I'm nice, I swear!)

-A team to play with. This guide should help you get set up as far as the site interface is concerned, and if you have questions go ahead and ask. Make sure your team is in the [L]eague division. Rookie teams only- no importing teams from other leagues.

-Commitment. Games take about 60-90 minutes, and you need to be able to play a game every week or so (ideal week advancement is every ten days, give or take) over a season which runs 5-7 weeks, plus playoffs. Things come up, and maybe you can't play every single week; in that event, I can just declare the game a 0-0 draw and we'll move along. But please, don't just quit on the league and leave a big hole in the schedule.

If you're interested, then sign up! Let me know your team name and coach name so I can invite you to the group. It would also be helpful to know your timezone and contact info outside these forums, for scheduling purposes. I'm also open to suggestions on the structure of the league- I don't know how much flexibility FUMBBL gives me, but I'm willing to hear opinions.

Roll To Dodge / Roll to Pierce the Heavens!
« on: January 16, 2013, 04:48:34 pm »
The world of Vanir is vast, and old, covered with great oceans, thick forests, and sprawling plains. The people of Vanir are proud warriors, tenacious fighters, honorable duelists. While belligerent, they are also capable of great feats of engineering, beautiful artworks and music, and surprising innovation. Constantly struggling amongst themselves, the Vaniri continually strive to surpass their neighbors in all pursuits, advancing in leaps and bounds.

Until the day the Beastmen came.

They dropped from the sky in terrible machines of war, giant mecha resembling terrible faces. None of the Vaniri weapons proved effective at stopping the mecha, the Ganmen, although their beastman pilots proved quite vulnerable in the rare occasion they were caught out of their vehicles. In the span of a week, the Beastmen had ravaged the Vaniri, razing their cities and smashing their armies. What few Vaniri remained retreated into the caves and hidden places of the world, desperately seeking to flee their conquerors. The Vaniri who chose not to flee were completely and utterly destroyed.

Except for you, of course.

You are a member of the Red Company, and you have managed to elude your pursuers since the day the Ganmen fell from the sky. Now you stand outside one of the Beastman encampments, ready to attack. Your objective- the Ganmen hanger in the center of the enemy base!

In the future, this portion of the OP will be used for rules- however, the rules are a little different while we're starting out. If you want to see where this RTD is going, check out this post. This RTD will not be first come first served- instead, anyone interested in playing can sign up right now and try to survive the coming assault on the Beastman base. Those who live are in. I'm anticipating high casualty rates, and I expect only 4 of you will make it to the objective. Those who do not make it will end up on the waitlist and will be eligible to replace fallen players or to assume NPC roles.

Spoiler: Base RTD Rules (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Players and Combat (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Abilities and Armament (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Waitlist (click to show/hide)

As we're now underway, further applicants will be placed at the bottom of the waitlist. Randomly selected waitlisters are eligible to take the role of bosses and other significant opponents.

Life Advice / So, who wants to reccomend a mouse/headphone/mic?
« on: July 10, 2012, 02:22:39 pm »
Not all in one, obviously :P

Long story short, my current not-expensive headphones and mouse are in the process of shitting the bed, so I'm looking to replace them. I'm willing to dish out a bit of coin for something good, but I'm not sure where to start looking. Quite frankly, I trust the experience of flesh and blood people I'm within one degree of separation with than any number of reviews and consumer reports, so I thought I'd start by asking what equipment you nice folks use.

To elaborate, I'm using a laptop (if that makes a difference, though I hope to upgrade to a new desktop inside a year.) I don't play much in the way of MMOs or similarly... interface intensive games, so I don't need a mouse with a lot of extra buttons and fancy doodads. I do play my fair share of shooters so it needs to be accurate, fast, and responsive. I use my headphones extensively every day since I still live at home (though that may change in the near future) so I need something comfortable, quality, and ideally durable. I do not and never have owned a mic (re: living at home,) so I don't know whether I want a headphone/mic thingy or if they should be separate. Durability is a big plus for me across all categories, since I hate shopping.

So! What do you people use? What do you want to use? What would you advise me to use, given my activities?
