Pretty sure that's also the edition where standard guardsmen could take a one shot vortex grenade launcher for 10 points a model and end the game on turn 1 as ten vortex grenades cleansed the entire enemy army in one go.

That sounds completely and utterly wrong.

Vortex Grenades in 2nd were a wargear card only AFAIK. And line troops could not buy wargear cards.

I mostly only know from this thread, but personally my favorite is Ursarkar "Tactical Genius" Creed, aka "CREEEEEEEED!"

I like the Blood Magpies Ravens even more, but they're just from the vidya.

Oh yeah and tl;dr, he can deep-strike (teleport/reveal mid-battle) fuckin tanks and shit.  Which presumably were just hidden in ambush, somehow...

Fortunately for the game he can no longer do that.

These days he's just a veeery good version of a guard commander, with bonus warlord traits and bonuses to his orders.

The most memetic imperial characters are traditionally Creed, Marbo (who no longer has rules), Calgar (insulting memes only) and Cato Sicarius (insulting memes).

Marbo (who no longer has rules)
'course he doesn't. Because if he's on the table the enemy has already lost :P

And Vance "Misplaced 100 baneblades" Stubbs, though that's from the vidya games again.

And Marbo got linked pretty recently but what the hell.

Actually, Vance Stubbs did give a pretty good speech about why the hell he dared defy the Space Marines and Sisters of Battle and all the other major powers threatening his system.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cno-_CM0yyU

But people mostly remember him for the Baneblades thing, natch :P

You say that, but I saw him blow himself up more than once while throwing his demo-pack at stuff only for it to scatter back on to him.  :P

There's also Commissar Fuklaw and Commissar Raege, both made by /tg/ and more of stories than actual tabletop characters but homemade rules exist. Kubrik Chenkov is also pretty memetic as he is responsible for half the "drown them in numbers" fame of Imperial Guard. Gunny "Stonetooth" Harker qualifies a bit too, as he's able to hipfire a fucking Heavy Bolter and move faster than a Space Marine. Colonel "Iron Hand" Straken, for some reason, he has a whole list of nicknames like "I ate a Miral landshark alive for breakfast", "Strangled a Night Lords Chaos Lord with a plant", "I use a bloodthirsters sword to cook my hot dogs" and obvious "Walking Exterminatus".

You say that, but I saw him blow himself up more than once while throwing his demo-pack at stuff only for it to scatter back on to him.  :P
Heresy.
This is what actually happens.

Sooo, after being sent on a wiki walk I read more about the AoS...

Is this supposed to represent a major divide of WF and 40k?

As in, for instance, now suddenly officially horned rat is a legit part of chaos?  slannesh is nonplayer?
