Rocks high in silicon
« on: June 19, 2008, 10:02:41 am »

I have made a small list of rocks and minerals in DF that are high in silicon, and I am looking to see what the community thinks should be in the list.  I want to get a opinion from the forums before I finalize the list for use in my current mod.

No, it isn't for Dwarven implants.

Tee hee...

Breasts...

Are you going to use them to make microchips?

Or uh...  Something else that's made of silicon?

It's for a total conversion, adding synthetic items not made from plants or animals.

If I could add something like oil I would make more accurate plastics.

Hmm, maybe I could add a stone that was historically rich in oil and make it processable.  While avoiding the problems with extracts, and other liquids in reactions.

On the note of Oil:

Oily rock strata:
Shale
Limestone

Oily soil:
Tar (Lebrah(sp?) Tar Pits)
Tar Sands (Venezuala and Canada)

If you don't mind being really hacky you could just make an oil "stone" and use that for processing. Of course, then you run into issues with Oil Chairs and Oil Beds, but it's something.

The dwarves could sell oil to the humans, who can't drill for it themselves because the elves don't want to hurt the environment.

The only way that I could imagine oil getting into the game would be to take a rock, turn it into a plant at the smelter, and then extract oil from that plant using the farmer's workshop.  You could get a barrel full of expensive uncookable fluid in a barrel.

But that would mean you'd have to bugger around with the smelter's plant problems...

Beard implants?
Dwarven squad: Silicone Beards. =)

And  why do you want uncookable liquid in barrel which cannot be used for anything but trade?

How about a bar of some substance labelled 'barrel of oil' that can be used as fuel?

As far as silicon (which has little to do with silicone, except that silicone contains some silicon), it's extremely common stuff. Just check out Wikipedia on Quartz. At one point, I added reaction classes to all of the different rocks and minerals based on what interesting constituents they had, but I never did anything else with it.

Yer all forgettng an important factor - oil shouldn't be in the game, because it's a product of organic decomposing over a very lage (tens/hundreds of thousands of years) time period. From what we know, dinosaurs didn't bless DF's many worlds with their presence, so it's quite possible oil simply does not exist. We could imitate oil by using plants with extracts though, vegetable oil is just as good at suddenly bursting into flame as any other, plus it's a viable fuel.
