We are doomed. It's just that whatever is going to kill us all just happens to be, from a scientific standpoint, pretty frickin' awesome.

Wait, Germany did too! Fuck what Piketty said, we (quite recently) paid the last portion of our WWI reparations. Of course there had been a significant amount of time where we didn't /repair/ at all, and IIRC there were no payments during the German/German split as well.

According to Tooze's Wages of Destruction, not only were there no payments during the German/German split, there were barely any payments before that.  Germany paid for the reparations by racking up national debt.  And then when the national debt got large, Hitler came to power and renounced the debt.  The one who paid the most reparations was the US!

Since when did we have to pay WWI reparations?

Since we loaned Germany the money and then Germany didn't pay it back at the same value.

The last offer to Greece. Highlights for Bay12:

Quote
On health care, effective as of July 1, 2015, (i) re-establish full INN prescription, without exceptions, (ii) reduce as a first step the price of all off-patent drugs to 50 percent and all generics to 32.5 percent of the patent price, by repealing the grandfathering clause for medicines already in the market in 2012, and (iii)) review and limit the prices of diagnostic tests to bring structural spending in line with claw back targets; and (iv) collect in the full the 2014 clawback for private clinics, diagnostics and pharmaceuticals, and extend their 2015 clawback ceilings to 2016

Quote
reduce the expenditure ceiling for military spending by €400 million

Quote
raise the corporate tax rate from 26% to 28%

Quote
extend implementation of luxury tax on recreational vessels in excess of 10 meters and increase the rate from 10% to 13%, coming into effect from the collection of 2014 income taxes and beyond

It's also worth mentioning that in many places, in particular in the section about pensions, there are passages allowing for the listed reforms to be replaced if (credible) alternative ways of saving money or generating further income are pursued.

You are talking pennies which are points of minor contention or even agreement.  The real dispute is:

1) Ask a party that campaigned against pension cuts to impose draconian pension cuts.
2) A hike on the VAT

And remember: none of this is even effective because Greece has one of the largest cyclically adjusted surpluses in the world right now...

On the scale of 1 to ITSHAPPENING, how bad will it make things if there's no agreement before the 30th of June?

ITSHAPPENING.

It's also amazingly stupid.  Europe sunk 200 billion in and could have gotten 200 billion out, without interest.  Not great but not the end of the fucking world given the number of mistakes made along the way.  Now they are greedily trying to claw back another ten billion or so to appease voters and are risking loosing some or even most of that 200 billion.

raise the corporate tax rate from 26% to 28%
This will amount to 200 million € more in taxes, if I am not quite mistaken. This is, as mainiac rightly puts it, pennies. The Syriza proposal at least has a 12% special tax in addition to it being set at 29% for those earning more than half a million (annually, I presume), which would be quite a bit more, depending on the size of Greek companies. If all of the revenue collected with corporate tax were qualified for the 12% increase for a total of 41%, the sum would be 3.34b€, a marked increase from 2.17b€. Personal income would still remain the primary source of tax income, but this way companies would not get a free ride. Of course not all companies make that much, but I'm confident that a fair few do, and that this arrangement would be at least marginally fairer to the people of Greece.

I have no faith that either side will accept the other's proposals. None at all.

@Helgoland, I am writing the response to your post re: class. It is taking a lot of time.

Given how happy that guy looks in the GIF, i'd say he must be a carpetbagger or a banker.
