If it's still going on, you might be able to get a clue by looking through the member list—you could see if they're upper-boarders, or lower-boarders, or spambots, or whatever.

Maybe DF was in the news again?

Looking in the data center, the spikes were on 2-17 and 3-13. Numbers jumped up, fell lower on 2-18 and 3-14 respectively, and were back to normal by 2-19 and 3-15. And it's just members online; there's no correlating spikes in new topics, new posts or new members (except for new posts on 3-13, which went up a paltry few hundred above normal).

DFhack or LNP releases, maybe?

Is it just that some activity got pulled forward by less than a day?  Any indication that posting patterns around midnight were odd?
