You could probably buy a 3d printer and make your own models for the price of a decent army.

I have actually been wondering how much it would cost me (if anything) to find someone with access to a 3d printer to do that. Alternatively, sculpting my own miniatures.

I think buying online is often cheaper than in the store, and there are sites where you can get miniatures and other stuff cheaper.

As for what to buy, I think picking up the main rulebook and IG codex would get you a long way, they contain info on how to build an army I think. After that, just get a few basic sets (eg guardsman squad) and practice your painting a bit (or buy painted figs from the net, expensive though I think).

Alright, I'll start with getting hold of the codices and follow on from there.

The trouble with the RPGs, etc., is that I'm not looking at this purely for the lore and the setting, but also partly because it's one of the only wargames I can actually play in meatspace with friends. Hopefully I can find some kind of affordable way...

Giving a hearty middle finger to 'WYSIWYG' and using various items to substitute units you don't have yet is also an option. If all you have are 2 painted guardsmen squads, it might more fun to use say, an empty Coke can and pretend it's a Leman Russ. Otherwise it'll be a while until you can play a half-decent game. And honestly, fuck WYSIWYG with a white hot cattle prod.

Empty coke can is taking it a bit far.

Substituting a leman russ as a land raider, or a tank model from some other game/not-game of a suitable size, sure, but put some effort in, at least.

Find the model sizes online and use cut paper?

Do origami, or interlocking construction paper of the right size, decorated nicely.

That would be pretty amazing and fun to play with, if...fragile. But also cheap!

Well, if one has that available, sure, even better! But if not, I wouldn't let a lack get in the way of having some fun. If nothing else, not having to wait to get into the playing part might help keeping interest.

Well, the thing is that I already make DnD miniatures, so if I can get a decent reference I should be able to make at least some of the figures with at least some accuracy. I assume it would carry over to some extent.

Well, just remember your opponent has to agree to it.

If you've got like one tank and some squads of guardsmen, I'd probably be fine with you using a large can(coke cans a bit too small, as well, to serve as a leman russ) to fill out your list so we can have a game; someone let me do that, and it was a really fun game, since otherwise I would barely be able to do anything with my $300 spent not-even-1000-fucking-points battlebox kit. (300 dollars includes the fourth edition codex I bought 2 months before the updated one was released, paints, and tools. Rage intensifies.)

But, if you just have a squad of space marines and want to use a bag of doritos as a land raider? No.

Or go for legos. Legos are cool.

Yeah, just remember that Imperial Guard are one of the 'Swarmiest' armies out there.

Armies like IG, Demons and Tyranids are gonna cost you more, because - more models.
That being said their tanks are some of the coolest in the game.

The Imperial Guard is why I love 40K.

Could it be adequately simulated using pieces of paper of varying sizes with extended/modified versions of these drawn on them? Because that's probably as cheap as you're going to get if it could.

Only for casual play, GW stores and events don't allow proxies IIRC.

You could probably hire an actual army for the price of an average 40K army.

Which is an absolute tragedy for me, since my entire plan revolved around playing at those - oh wait the nearest GW store is in Spain.

Although there is an independent retailer within a more reasonable striking distance.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice guys. I'll probably come back after I have a better idea of what I'm looking for.

If you really just want to war-game there are a number other very popular ones out there. Warmachine is somewhat close to war hammer, not really 40k but oh well. Flames of War used to be quite popular as well, but I think it's no long widely played.

EDIT: I take that back about FOW, it still seems to be moderately popular at least.
