Saying "Who would win in a fight" is kind of pointless, because so much of combat relies on other factors. Who is attacking, who is defending? Who has air superiority? Who has the most troops and vehicles, and what kind? Who is leading? For IG especially, what are they equipped with and how are they trained? Humans suffer from rediculous levels of schizotech. They could be howling barbarians with axes, or disciplined, drilled soldiers with hellguns and heavy carapace, or anything inbetween. What's the terrain? What's the weather?

Deathstrikes are not tanks Kot. The insistence of such results in orks taking them for joyrides.

Best results? Best results. They need to do more of that.

Takes about three turns to fire though, and that's once it's got the missile on. Probably takes a few days to get the damn missile on for it to use :P

So Kharn is getting a new model in plastic, taking after the AoS Khorne models in style, and Ahriman is getting a plastic 30k model for the next Betrayal at Calth type plastic HH box.

Yes, apparently they're gearing up for a mystery release on the 3rd.

Also having played a few hammer n' anvil games on an 6"|12" table, yes there is a place for basilisks and deathstrikes.
Until that one space mahrneens dude teleports terminators into your artillery line and you have moved your entire army up so they just have to listen to the distant popping noises of their fire support disappearing behind them as they advance.

Death-strikes should only ever be taken as an entire army force and fired at the next table over.

Also Lemon Russes have great armor, av14 means that it's a 50% chance to glance on a str10 shot, which the Hamhock only gets one of. And if you're using marker lights to boost your 4+ shot, you're not using it to remove the 3+ cover save a properly-em placed tank with a camo net gets. Or the one next to it, or the artillery behind it, or the chimeras racing up the board. Remember, there is no Overwatch against tank-shock, only instantly removing all models unable to get away.

Unless you have the magic dice of the fucker who plays mechanicum at my FLGS and explode a 2+ cover save lemon on turn 1. But you don't plan for what-ifs, which is why you don't take Hamhocks. Spend the points on deep striking battle suits with melta instead.

Tl;dr, Guard have the best tanks so don't try and out-tank them without something gross like razorback lascannon spam.

I dunno I feel like broadsides would get work done.

I dunno I feel like broadsides would get work done.

The missile pods they get are very scary for low and middle AV vehicles. Lots of shots at a decent strength lets them glance most vehicles to death very fast.

Can't do anything to AV14, though they are very tanky with a 2+ armour save which usually makes them trickier to remove than a Hammerhead in my experience.

See the thing is that a tau player likely has both battlesuits and hammerheads. Not to mention that a leman russ with a +2 or +3 cover save is going to be a priority target.

It really won't be for anything but Seeker missiles.

But we do love us some flanking. Each and every Piranha can carry two Seeker Missiles, after all. And deep striking missile pods & fusion blasters do work. Railheads are good, but they're more for versatility and part of overall strategy; they have superior mobility and firing options. Leman Russes can specialize so much more, and they're best as part of a gunline, but Hammerheads can make better use of terrain and ignore cover a lot more easily.

And this is entirely before Predators :p

My experience fighting Tau (as basically every flavour of Chaos) leads me to view them as a more generalist shooting version of Eldar (with waaaaay less build options though) in many ways. They're slightly less mobile, usually focus on higher strength and range and less gimmicks like Rending and Lance, and outside their core infantry are also less specialised compared to the Eldar.

With the changes to Kroot they lost their main melee option which distances them from the generic Eldar which of course still has three melee specialist units not counting the Wraith stuff.

In general the main counters to one are the main counters to the other, unless you come up against a Jetbike Eldar army, in which case there's not a whole lot you can do. If you can handle Eldar skimmers you can probably handle Tau skimmers and vice-versa, and if you can deal with massed gunfire from Aspect Warriors you can almost certainly handle a Tau gunline.

Also much like most Eldar they fold when you close unless you get stupidly bad luck (as I have on many occasions, ever seen a Ripdtide kill a full health Bloodthirster in assault? I have.  ::) ) or you use rules that haven't been updated  for a while.

Any IG player of experience will have discovered officers of the fleet- making an outflank-reliant army unbearable.
A fact I recount with the sadistic glee of past experience.

Of course, now we're getting into crunch and have basically dropped fluff. Which is interesting for this thread.

Not that discussing crunch isn't a bad thing at all though. A nice change of pace from constant propaganda anyway :P

Anyway, I'd say that, at a glance the big difference between Eldar and Tau armies is the tau's most effective FA unit: the piranha. A full unit of five gives you a pretty speedy unit for cheap, especially when you count in the drones in the price. They get a good flanking unit able to really make life miserable on whatever they're kitted out to shoot, and you've got a nice screening unit to boot. The other thing is the friggen AX-1-0 Tiger shark. Who wants to kill baneblades indiscriminately without worry of return fire?

Also Grim, you really should write that story up some time, a riptide killing a friggen bloodthirster in MELEE is absolutely hilarious. Have to feel sorry for the poor bastard given the admonishment khorne would be giving them :P
