Stratedgy: A (Badly) Illustrated Village-Building Game
« on: February 17, 2020, 02:08:30 pm »

This game is based on the Stratedgy (yes, that's spelled correctly) games on /tg/, which can best be described as a series of town-building ISGs. Since I am much less artistically inclined than the original GM, however, this game will be primarily illustrated with ASCII.

You are in a grassy field. There is a river lazily running through it, and a forest to the north. To your south, there is a small stone boulder.

Do we have resources with which to build things, or do we just say that we want to construct something and it happens?

Yep, as ever, I bestow upon Glass the expected +1
I'm gonna say we go with whatever Glass's idea is.

Hooray!

Assess our resources. How many are we? What supplies did we bring with us, if any?

It's rather freeform. If you say that you want to build a log cabin, I'll assume you cut down a tree or two.

You have some basic gear. There's not much in the way of stockpiles, but you have some tools. You are about 3 strong.

Hmn...

The very first thing has to be, of course, a house to stay in and store stuff in. Possibly also with a small field to farm on.

It should be next to the river.

Hm, no stockpiles means no food. We'll have to scramble a bit, or this could prove a very short game.  :-X

Have one guy begin construction on a quick shack or two for shelter-- we'll consider proper cabins later. Have another guy try and find some fish in the river; have a third guy begin prospecting the wilderness for game and plant edibles. We can do this!

You have one of your men throw up two quick shacks. They're cheap and by no means ideal, but they'll do for now.

The other two look for food - one in the river, and the other in the forest. Between the two of them, you manage to get some fish and berries.

Let’s try to make fishing rods - for more effective fishing - and a cooking pit.

+1

Fish guy can work on the fishing rods, shack guy can work on the pit. Forager guy needs to start poking for farmable foodstuff: millable grass seed, root vegetables and the like. We could use a long-term food source.

Also, do our settlers have names?
Also also, are we a settler ourselves? Or are we more of an omnipotent overseer figure?

I'll leave the settlers' details up to you players. You can decide if any of them represents you or not.

You create a small fire pit for cooking. While there's no string to create a proper fishing rod, you fashion some spears out of sharpened sticks.

The forager looks for seeds but does not find any.

Can the forager find any fibrous plants? We may not have proper woven string, but we can get a suitable substitute.

From hereon out, our settlers shall be referred to as:

- Ernie (fish guy)
- Bernie (carpenter guy)
- Clyde (forager guy)

Ernie continues fishing with his new spear!
Bernie sets up a drying rack near the fire pit, for preserving fresh-caught fish against decay.
Clyde pokes about for plant fiber.

The rack has been set up from wooden branches.

Clyde leaves and returns with some plant usable for plant fibre. The new spear seems to be effective and increases the number of catches Ernie makes.

Ex-cellent. We've got a steady food supply, and the potential for a cloth industry!

Over the next few weeks:
Ernie continues his fishing.
Bernie begins the raising of a proper cabin!
Clyde prepares fish for the drying rack. (Do we have knives among our tools? If not, Clyde will improvise with a bit of flaked stone.)

If they have any spare time, scout out the surrounding lands. It doesn’t have to be long, distant journeys, just a peek to see whatever happens to stand out on the horizon.
