Epic Games has For Honor and Alan Wake free this week.

Grab For Honor if you're willing to deal with the Epic Games store. It's got a pretty substantial free offering these days, and if you enjoy those sort of combat-focused games, it's a good time. You don't even have to do MP, you can just play against bots and still unlock stuff and progress, albeit a lot slower. Definitely glad I grabbed it when Ubi gave it away for free a while back.

No clue. I've played very little actual MP of it.

Disgaea 5 is having a free weekend and a sale.

If you know what that is, you probably already know if you want it or not.

If you don't know what that is, it involves anime demons, exploding demon penguins, and grind.

Definitely a good pickup, at least gameplay-wise. Some people don't like the overplayed and overly stereotypical character archetypes, but IMO that's never not been a thing with the series.

Hrm, a free weekend of a Disgaea game seems particularly devious.  I'm glad the total price is 23.99, because I loved 1&2 and am excited to play a more refined edition.

I assume it's fine to skip 3 and 4 for now, there'll surely be tons of references and cameos but should be fine (they do that with their entire catalogue of games in Disgaea 2, and it works fine).  I guess I don't have to assume though, free weekend and all.  Wish I had more sleep banked up!

For some reason, I'd convinced myself that Disgaea was a series of vertical bullet hell shooters.

You are probably confusing it with Touhou, which are a bullet-hell type vertical shooter.

Disegaea is a tactical RPG like Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem, only ridiculous. There's a lot more complexity to the combat and player power (character levels, item levels) is capped far, far in excess of what it takes to beat the game.
