You only have three corruption chasms? Really? Is that a small world or something? The world I've been playing on has had a dozen or more, I think - it's a large world. There was a corruption area to the left of spawn, one far to the right of spawn, and one beyond the dungeon, too.

No, I have plenty of chasms (about twenty), but only three (I think) of them had Orbs at the bottom.  Other than that, my world appears to be Orbless, unless you can find them way way underground.

You might want to use the mapper to find those pesky orbs.

My current Copper Brick Floating Fortress Is being changed into Blue Brick Floating Fortress, as copper takes too long time to find.
So blue bricks, with gray brick walls seem to be a nice option.
When I am finished and the NPCs have moved in, operation Orbital Bombing will commence.

This seems relevant to Bay12's interests.

My mainworld base is mostly stone; the NPC quarters are raised off of the ground, the guard towers and the underground section, up to and including the mushroom farm (minus 400-odd foot fall it takes to get down there. Those who forsake Lucky Horseshoes beware!
Also I now have few dedicated chests to various things, like wood, stone, metals, glass, weapons and potions. It's a pretty sweet base, plus a boss arena for fighting eyethulhu and the EoW. Fuck Skeletron though. The guy's an ass.

Also, I have yet to lose a meteor to bad placement. My next one will be my fifth harvest of sweet, sweet Meteor Shot (saving up for Skelefail). If my computer stops being a dick, I may host a new-genned small world for Skeletron murdering. He's pounding me into the ground, and it needs to stop.

Sigh. I can't get ANY Hellstone. The second I dig deep enough, three imps surround me in little inaccessible pockets of space and shoot magic while bone serpents wreck me and knock me into the lava.

HOW do people deal with this, let alone in multiplayer?

I once shot a bear in the eye with a bow on the first shot, cut it up, found another one, and shot it in the eye too. The collective pile of meat weighed more than my house.

Dig deeper. There will be fewer places to spawn.

YES! I killed the Eye of Cthulhu with a magic boomerang (and a silver bow, but mostly the bomerang).

Now I just need to slap the Eater of Worlds around for some scales.

If you want armor, two EoWs is better (and easier) than one iC and one EoW. That's because EoW grants you one free piece of the kit.

Guzzle potions with no real intention of survival beyond enough time to get some mining in.  Ignore the imps unless they spawn near to you.  Keep swining your pickaxe and it will deflect the majority of projectiles.

When confronted with bone serpents, find an open enough space that you can step aside when they surge up, and do as much damage as you can.  You typically only need to kill a couple to earn a minute or two of relief from them.  If you can take on the eater of worlds, you should be able to handle bone serpents.

A flail or a sword with a long reach will help with bone serpents.

If you can beat skeletron, scour the dungeon for a cobalt shield; It'll make the underworld 9001% easier by stopping knockback entirely (No more being knocked into magma - yes, that's worth fighting skeletron and raiding the dungeon for, even if you need to build a star cannon to beat him :P (you probably don't)).

Play with friends. Hope the monsters go for them instead of you while you frantically mine away before you die.

I haven't been playing Terraria much lately since I've explored the current content to the extent of my desire, but I thought I'd just post my refined NPC housing since I spent more time on it than I care to admit.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's the smallest I could manage to get each house, though it may be possible to go smaller by manipulating the floor/ceiling surface area. Note the two bottom houses and how the chair isn't on level surface with the door/table. Again, I got tired of testing stuff (or rather the wait between tests) so you might be able to raise or lower the chair, table, and or door in different ways. I'm also about 90% sure you could move the top room to the bottom section so that it's more of a basement complex instead of a roof complex.

Things I wanted to test but didn't get around to:
  • Can torches be placed behind glass enclosures but still spawn NPCs
  • Can torches be replaced by other light sources, namely by water candles and those dungeon lanterns
  • If any of the above proves true, can lava be used as a light source (Note: Doubtful, lava produces very little light in small quantities. You need a very large, bulky pool of lava to provide any decent light)
