I remember the wiki saying one was found approximately ~300 tiles high but I don't even know what that means or what it's relative to.

You can try building platforms into the sky, but this takes a lot of materials, a fair amount of time, and from then on any meteors that hit your platform are wasted because they only produce a few pieces of ore. A preferable solution, if your willing, is to get a goblin invasion and from that get rocket boots, then grab a full set of meteor armour and all the rings of star power you have, and fly through the skies looking for them.

There is a device you can craft that will tell you exactly how high up you are.

According to the wiki 430 feet is the optimum height to be at when looking for flying islands (430 feet is ~215 tiles above the ground).

As far as beds are considered in single player... do you simply build one to redefine your spawn point? Or do you have to activate it in some way?

I'm doing this on a separate world to my main one with my house on anyway. I'm building a platform at the top of my world, about 475 feet up.
