Roll To Dodge / Roll to Dodge: Fall of Ovechkin
« on: July 13, 2018, 10:40:25 am »
It’s the end of the road for Katzar Ovechkin Sundqvist Grigorievich.

His country, Vlanlados, is torn apart for its uranium deposits by the nations of Forenia and Cannala. His machinations, his spies, his plots, are all for naught. His spy network, once spanning two nations, is beaten and broken. His factories are razed to the ground. He is hated by the world over. Even Hitler is thought above him. His people are enslaved under the yoke of a foreign power. Those who could escape sail a failing vessel into the unknown, fleeing to the windswept, lifeless wastes of Antarctica, where no man has ever survived and where no sane man would venture. Barely a week into their journey, they are intercepted by a Forenian patrol, which demands the Katzar in exchange for the lives of everyone on board. With hardly any debate, the people fork him over. Not that he would resist, if it saved his people. They say he’ll be given a trial, but there’s no doubt in his mind that the Forenians see it as merely an amusing prelude before the execution. Before he leaves his countrymen rob him blind, leaving him only a poor stick to lean on. Then they disappear into the thick Antarctic fog, taking his young daughter with them to an unknown fate. Katzar Ovechkin Sundqvist Grigorievich has lost everything. His people, his country, his pride. The only thing to lose is his life.

So let’s get to losing that, too!

Q&A:

What is this?

So this guy Sensei started an Arms Race between us and SpaceBattles Forums called the Intercontinental Arms Race. This one guy piratejoe decides to start a third party and manages to espionage out enough supplies to build a small nation, Vlanlados, with himself playing as the ruler, Katzar Ovechkin Sundqvist Grigorievich. It promptly gets pureed from all sides. Piratejoe manages to coerce Sensei into starting a spinoff game, Exodus from Vlanlados, describing the remains of Vlanlados escaping to Antarctica. Forenia feels like it isn’t done with Ovechkin, however, and launches a mission to arrest and detain him.

So, this is canon?

Yeah, everything I say here is canon. Sensei gave me permission to run this game, and I’ll run everything important through him before nailing it down. Bear in mind that I didn’t actually play the original Arms Race and I’m not in the new Arms Race. My first exposure to this was Exodus from Vlanlados… so don’t lynch me if I get Forenia’s official military salute wrong or something.

What mechanics will you use?

Well, it IS a roll to dodge, but I know better than to give +1 bonuses to people because stack 4 of those as well as overshoot protection and you’ll get solid 5s. (Right, Glass?) So I’ll be running a D&D - style advantage and disadvantage system, where I roll multiple dice and take the highest or lowest. Advantage or disadvantage will be given via circumstances, your skills, the implausibility of your actions, etc…This will allow me to virtually guarantee a good result, but still have a fair chance of not getting it, as well as diminishing returns for ever-higher levels.

And advantage and disadvantage DON’T cancel out, by the way. If you have n advantage and m disadvantage, what I’ll do is roll n+m+1 dice, then throw out the top m and the bottom n. Basically, I take the m+1st dice. The effect of this is that an action with extreme advantage and disadvantage will be guaranteed to have a mediocre result - which makes sense, if both sides are ridiculously prepared that will be an even match.

Wait, so what’s your interpretation of dice rolls and skill levels and stuff?

I’ve gotten some flak for this in the past, so here’s the guidelines I’m using in this game:

On rolls:

1 = You did absolutely NOTHING you wanted to do, and may have done a few things you DIDN’T want to do in the process
2 = You didn’t do anything useful, but hey! It could be much worse.
3 = You did some of the things you wanted. The situation has improved in several ways
4 = You succeeded
5 = You succeeded and your action had some nice bonus effects too
6 = In the most technical terms you did what you wanted, but the outcome is not good by any stretch

Note that under my judgement, a 6 is considered about equal to a 3. For purposes of “best of” I’ll consider it better.

On circumstance:

The difficulty of an action will give you either advantage or disadvantage as follows:

+3 = An everyday, simple task that most people can do in their sleep
+2 = Something that requires barely any forethought or difficulty
+1 = A safe, reliable action, where you have precautions in place to make it happen
0 = You’re taking a real risk by trying to do this
-1 = It’s uncharted territory, and attempting it reeks somewhat of desperation
-2 = There’s no logical way this will work, but maybe you can figure something out
-3 = To do this is lunacy. It’ll be a miracle if it succeeds

On skill:

Your specific skills will provide an advantage to certain rolls as follows:

0 = You really didn’t prepare for this…
+1 = It’s something that you’ve been reading up on, but you’re still not confident
+2 = You’re trained to do this as part of your job
+3 = You’re a renowned expert on doing this type of thing.

If you are fighting someone, the enemy's skill will be subtracted.

What's the goal?

The goal of the game is to either break the Katzar out of jail, or get his sentence reduced below death. You're ordinary Vlandosian citizens and/or especially inept spies that have gone with him to do this.

Can we do stuff other than rescuing the Katzar?

Yes, absolutely. Feel free to goof around Forenia if you like. Or play on Forenia's side and sabotage everything, whatever.

So, how do we start?

Well, the Katzar’s been thrown onto the Forenian ship. Several dozen of his loyal followers are allowed to accompany him to trial. Post who you are, and what you’re trying to bring onboard. I’ll decide if the Forenians let you.

This is likely a terrible idea, as I’m already bogged down writing (SG) SPAMOVERLORD and Roll to Dodge: Acter's Revenge, but I’ll try anyway. A co-GM would be sorely appreciated.

So the original Newscience is long-dead and nobody, least of all me, remembers what it was all about, so instead of writing an update I’m going to just do a full reboot. Hopefully this one will last longer.

This is my attempt at capturing the process of scientific inquiry in the format of a forum game.

I’ve devised a system of natural law and a world that is slightly different from ours. Post experiments that you wish to conduct and I will return the results.

There are a few guarantees I will make to simplify things:

  • The world is superficially similar to our own. No need to go off determining that grass is green or the sky is blue or the sun sets at night. By “superficially similar” I mean that “an average American citizen, walking for one planetary rotation in a habitable region in this universe, will be unable to find any solid evidence that it is different from ours. Anything visible at a glance? Identical.
  • All political or economic elements will be abstractified out. You do not need to ask whether we have enough money to conduct an experiment or what our data is being used to do or whatever. The “faith in science” thing from the original Newscience will be eliminated. Assume that if you can do something, civilization will find a way. You will be assumed to start at a early-Renaissance level of technology, and the technologies you have developed will limit what you can do. You also are assumed to take the role of a single human settlement, and will have to explore the rest of the world.
  • Newton’s laws remain. All of them. Things have inertia, F=ma holds, and every action has a reaction.
  • Energy and kinetic energy is unchanged. For some definition of energy, the energy in a closed system is conserved, and this definition of energy includes that the energy of a moving object is proportional to the square of its velocity.
  • Don’t rederive calculus. Assume that all math topics are known and can be used in your theories.
  • You are not the center of the universe. Not even close.

All questions and data will be stored on the Newarchive and basic data about each question will be placed in the Newrecord for reference. Data there may be marginally more current so check often.

GO!

Roll To Dodge / Roll to Dodge: Acter's Revenge

We have a Discord!

Spoiler: Current universe (click to show/hide)

It’s over.

You’ve finally done it.

You all have finally messed it up.

You just had to ruin it, didn’t you?

Nobody thought it would happen, but it adds up.

As it turn out, the quiet things are often the most dangerous.

Everyone just assumed that no change this big would come.

You were playing your games and didn’t realize what’s going on.

You’ve burned one too many houses, tormented one too many people.

The straw broke the camel’s back, but woe be to the ones at the bottom.

Now there’s nothing to do but run, because the consequences are going to be chasing you.

There’s literally not that many words to describe how monumental what you’ve done is.

I think that you should be proud. This is actually kinda hard to do.

Usually nobody screws up this bad, but this isn’t usual

This was never supposed to happen, but it did.

It worked for a time but then it didn’t.

And it’s because of you.

You messed it up.

You’ve done it.

You finally made Acter snap.

ROLL TO DODGE:

ACTER'S REVENGE

Exactly what it says on the tin.

There’s a long-standing tradition in god games where Glass plays as a nice-guy god of invention called Acter and everyone else lines up to do dumb stuff around him and mess with the mortals and creation and generally make him the Only Sane Man and piss him off to no end.

Well, guess what, Good Is Not Soft. And you’re about to find that out. Big-time. Time to pay the piper, because you’ve finally pissed Acter off to the degree that he just decides to screw over literally every other god in every other creation in every other universe. Calling all his power from all his instances together, he simply picks a universe and starts there.

And now you, as Acter’s fellow gods that have bothered him one too many times, just have to run for it, don’t you. With the worship of dozens of universes on his side, intellect of thousands of entities mirrored into one, and rage capable of tearing apart the fabric of creation just by itself, you don’t stand a chance. You just have to run, skipping across hundreds of universes that Acter hasn’t seen yet, staying one step ahead of his multifractaled trajectory through the Realmverse, collecting fellow surviving deities along the way.

More information will be posted later. Post if you’re interested!

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Newscience - Discovering a New Universe!
« on: September 10, 2017, 04:35:05 pm »
This is my attempt at distilling the process of scientific discovery into forum game format. I've created a new system of universal laws and science that is... slightly different from our own. You can devise experiments, which I will then evaluate the results of.

To start off, here's a few facts about this new universe. It appears about the same as ours, with various continents, large liquid oceans, plants that gather sunlight, and animals that eat those plants and each other. The sky is full of stars, planets, and the sun. Propose detailed surveys of each of these, and differences will become apparent.

I can guarantee that these facts from our universe hold:

  • Newton's Laws. Inertia, F=ma, and reaction to every reaction still exists.
  • Conservation of Energy. For some definition of energy, energy in the universe remains constant.
  • Kinetic Energy. The energy carried by a moving object is proportional to the amount of inertia it carries and the square of its velocity.
  • You are not the center of the universe

Propose away! Do note that some discoveries will require others; e.g. the Large Hadron Collider would require superconductor tech (or its equivalent). We are at around the level of classical mechanics - prehistory to 16th century is the period.

I'm not done writing the laws, of course, I'm very much going to be making it up as we go along.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / (SG) SPAMOVERLORD: Epilogue: Guest Week
« on: August 19, 2017, 07:53:58 am »

I know its in progress, and it's miles long, but I really need more players. The overarching plot: This is a satire of fantasy fiction. The universe as a whole is trying to preserve a plot of a few rebels defeating an immense empire. We’re based in Antarctica and have colonized/taken over Argentina. Our main piece of technology is a wormhole connecting these two places. The rebels want to destabilize this wormhole. They think this’ll just create a black hole, but actually it’ll just explode with the force of a nuclear bomb. The main theme of all this is that blind adherence to an ideology is extremely dangerous for all involved.

So most RPGs, and even most action fiction in general, feature a huge asymmetry between the protagonist and antagonist, right? The protagonists are a tiny, divided band of ill-equipped commoners. The antagonists are this huge organization with vast forces and technology and resources far above those that Our Heroes can bring to bear - but they lose because the protagonists are resilient, clever, driven, and special - and frankly, they're the good guys and this is a story.

Well, suppose we turned that around? Suppose we play as the big, evil empire, and try to save our own hides, having the full knowledge that our enemies hide in the shadows, steal all our plans, run circles around our troops - and that all our bullets tend to miss them?
Welcome to (SG) SPAMOVERLORD.

-----

To begin, let's have some background on this.

The time period is:
A: Far past; think Greek or Roman stuff
B: Victorian era/Steampunk; horses, cars, and huge dresses are found in around equal numbers
C: Present day; the Internet and nuclear weapons control everything
D: Far future; most speculative tech has become reality, we have interplanetary and some interstellar colonies.

The character, the person you control, is the individual most responsible for the defence of an empire of questionable morality that holds the majority of the known human population subject.

Your position is:
A: Commander in Chief; a brilliant tactician and military general.
B: Chief intelligence officer; tasked with keeping us in the loop and keeping them out
C: Scientist; creating weapons and technologies to give us an edge over those that wish to destroy us
D: The Emperor; if you want something done right, do it yourself, eh?

The primary weapon of the Empire is:
A: An unstoppable army that crushes anything in it's path
B: A system of deception and control that prevents anyone from knowing they're enslaved a la Orwell
C: A huge technological advantage over anyone that challenges them
D: A solid and flexible bureaucracy that responds to any threat with stunning speed.

The most annoying part of your culture is:
A: Mandatory and brutal military training
B: A rite of passage that involves betraying and being betrayed by your loved ones
C: A strict meritocracy where anyone that does not success is punished harshly
D: Arranged marriage and regular corrupt politicking

Also, come up with names for empire, character, and/or Emperor!

NEXT STORY POST

I’m a complete noob at Dwarf Fortress (well, not completely… I have one tiny fort) and I’m creating a community story, in adventure mode, that is completely new and innovative, so this ought to be fun.

The basic idea is that this is a community adventure game, with a playthrough of Dwarf Fortress documented except at every turn of the way, every decision of the journey, I’m going to let the will of the majority be my guide.

Every single time there is a decision that needs to be made, no matter how insignificant, I will put up a poll for that decision or (more likely) ask for suggestions on the forums, a la The Littlest Cheesemaker. Then I’ll go with whatever you, the community, decides. Your votes decide where the character goes… and what we do with the bogeymen when we get to them… and what we use to bash the bogeymen in… and from which angle we bash them in… and which one we bash… and where we bash it… and so on. Shout out “Go north!” and I will literally load save, press the up key, take screenshot, copy log, and save. If we get into a fight, that means several pages of arguments on the best way to hit a troll.

Needless to say, this will take a lot of time to get anything done, but that’s part of the idea. We all get to see how this might pan out. To the best of my knowledge I don’t think anyone has done this before, but if they have, please tell me how it ended!

So let’s get started. The poll on the forums itself is for choosing the race the adventurer in question will be, if possible. In order to get results for more questions at the same time, I’m going to be using external polling services. This Google form is for voting on the world settings. Just as a starting rule, this game will be played in unmodded Dwarf Fortress and without advanced generation, otherwise the amount of choices will be too big. I would advise against Large World and/or Long History for the sake of avoiding !!computer!!.

Remember, I’m new to both DF and these forums so be sure to jeer at every little thing I get wrong! I’m talking forum etiquette, though - one of the wonders of democracy is that you can always blame someone else and once we’re in game, it’s literally all your fault. All joking aside, please correct any minor mistakes I make and if I accidentally say something insulting, rest assured that it was an accident.

My play time is somewhat slight and erratic as a result of… real-world commitments.I’ve also probably cooked my own goose by starting this right in exams week (!) so don’t be surprised if I disappear for a while. I’ll try to respond/play/post once a day.

Get started! Poll will run for 2 days or 10 votes, whichever comes first. Simple majority wins. I will submit my own vote.
Countdown to Poll Close
