Question, why would people want to be sued?
They don't. Twitter and other social media platforms are filled with bots that search for "I want this on a shirt" and outright steal artwork posted there.

So disgruntled artists decided to strike against the asshole retailers who profit off of independent artists by laying traps. It worked.

Read the article; it will make more sense.

Basically, some "Enterprising people" on the internet have created automated image scraping AIs, that look for "popular" images on twitter and pals, and then automatically offer T-shirts and other merch made with them, WITHOUT THE CONSENT OF THE IMAGE'S ORIGINATOR.

So-- To combat this plague, some OTHER clever people, started making genuine IP misappropriation images, that were *CERTAIN* to get legal action from very well paid lawyers--- Like Disney.

They did this by posting images with copyrighted character images, saying that the image is indeed copyright infringement, and that the people making the shirts and other merch genuinely want to be sued. (because those merch people are not having humans review these merch options-- it's entirely done by the scraping bot AIs.) The idea is to invite those lawsuits, and show that the merch makers are willful infringers.

Now;  I despise Disney. Their predaceous exploitation of western fairytales for exclusive profits, coupled with their relentless lobbying for eternal copyrights, and shameless litigation frenzies make me find them to be worse than scum.  As such, any time their lawyers are kept too busy to go after grandma for making a disney themed knit jumper for her grandchild (instead of buying official merch), I am very pleased.

When that redirection ALSO happens to take out a plague against mankind, like automated merch mills, it makes my doubly pleased.

To be fair, the owners of grumpy cat are literally millionaires because they successfully stole from other creators (with a hefty side of copyright lawyering). Once it has been proven to work once, people will line up to do it.

I now want to include some of these in Spellcrafts. Everybody loves The Spell!

Spoiler: today's xkcd (click to show/hide)

The bit at the end has me deeply concerned.  Likely it will involve cosmic destruction for the sole sake of keeping easily distracted movie patrons in their seats, with a hastening of the heat-death of the universe as a consequence.  Because JJ Abrams.  Oh-- it will all be caused by young and angsty characters, because that's what market research thinks is edgy and cool, even when it makes the plot revolve around endless hormones and bullshit instead of --you know-- boring but actually poignant politics or insight into the human condition and shit.

Still a good laugh though.
