Play With Your Buddies / Solium Infernum PBEM 2 - Interest Check
« on: September 12, 2015, 04:57:33 pm »
Haven't PBEM'd in a while, and I don't feel quite ready for another Dominions match just yet. So in the meantime, anyone up for a game of Solium Infernum? 4-6 player game would be nice to get going. Settings are negotiable but I'll put my preferred ones below. I can host the game. I can't guarantee turn a day, every day, but I don't expect too many hiccups.

I'm not in a rush to start this, so I'm willing to wait a week or two to get the full 6 if necessary.

Players (2/6):
Delta Foxtrot - dibs on the horse head fiend
Cheeetar

Settings:
Map size - Normal
Map type - Not sure. Something other than Lake of Fire, the guaranteed PoP is pretty powerful. Might as well sample something else for a change. Do we want more open land or choke points? I probably lean towards choke points.
Places of power - Uncommon
Game length - Short or Normal
Infernal census - No
Rectification expansion - Yes

A multi perspective AAR from Rock Paper Shotgun with four of the six players chronicling their game as it went on. Jolly good read that sparked my interest in the game.

We discussed this a while ago in the general dominions 4 thread. This is going to be a match using Elmokki's fine NationGen mod. For those not in the know, it's a mod that generates random nations. Each player in the game will generate one that they like and we'll play using those.

A few issues in the game at the time of this match:
-Casting the spell Transformation risks crashing the game. Until they patch it, just don't.
-Flying raiders using the 'raid' command can't be intercepted. They are currently more or less uncounterable. Don't use them. Non-flying raiders are fine.

An archived snapshot of the Dom3 wiki: Yes, it's still relevant, and it hasn't been replaced yet, so... It has loads of useful information, including strategy guides. Keep in mind that while a lot of this information is still very useful and valid, a lot of it is entirely out-of-date.

Reserves, please confirm you're still in. I'd like to keep this a small game. I believe I suggested 6-8 players in the other thread. I think that's a decent size to aim for. I'll look at maps a little later, I'd like to try one of Pymous' smaller maps, they should fit out planned game size.
I would prefer a site frequency of 50-55, but I could manage as low as 45 (EA default) if people insist.
Throne wise I would prefer a number of level 1 thrones only. Level 3's are OP as hell and 2's give plenty of mages. Normally I wouldn't mind the mages, but I'd like to keep our randomly generated national mages in the spotlight. Exact numbers are up to debate.
I'm really liking the easy research in 408, but I can go with normal if people so desire.

There's still room for people who didn't originally express interest, and those who did may still bow out. Let me know. I would like to get this game started early next week, but if people need more time to generate and try out nations, I suppose I can't force it. Also if anyone has any pointers about adminning a nationgen game, I'd love to hear them.

Other Games / Crawl 0.14 Tournament - Finished
« on: March 28, 2014, 06:02:26 pm »
So, it's a thing again.

In case you don't know what this is about, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is having another one of it's online tournaments. The way it works is you play on one of their online servers, either solo or as a team and at the end of the tourney we get to see cool leaderboards based on how well you and us did.

Bay12 Crawl thread is here.
Official Crawl site is here.
The old 0.13 tournament thread is here.

There can only be six players in a team, so there's usually been a few Bay12 teams named in a dwarven fashion.

So if you're interested post here and tell us how experienced you are. We try to group people to roughly match their skill level, but it's not too specific. Last time we used this specific criteria:
Expert: Win or multiple runes.
Advanced: A rune or close to one.
Intermediate: Reached the Lair
Beginner: Wants to join the Tournament

Note that I haven't been playing much since the last tourney so do tell me guys if Lair is no longer the staple go-to place it once was.

Here's a guide to playing online:
http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/howto
Link to the knowledgebot:
http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/bots
Helpful if you want to check some new items/critters you come across

Players so far:
name/crawl name - skill level

Bay12 Champions
Dr Feelgood/DrFeelgood - expert - Team Captain
Graven/Gravenous - expert
monk12 - expert
tegga21/tegga21 - expert
Covenant - expert/advanced
Aelig - expert/advanced

Bay12 Blacksmiths
Delta Foxtrot/DeltaCharlie - advanced/intermediate - Team Captain
Jiokuy - advanced
tompliss - advanced
Un67 - advanced
Karlito - advanced/intermediate
vogonpoet - advanced/intermediate

Bay12 Miners
Xgamer4 - advanced/intermediate - Team Captain
Ygdrad - beginner
gigaraptor487 - beginner
Elephant Parade - beginner
bulborbish
ggurman - beginner

Bay12 Nobles
thegoatgodpan - expert - Team Captain
AnturK
Thornet

---

My only win is from 0.12 and I haven't played much since the 0.13 tourney, in which I may have underperformed somewhat, so I'd probably be best placed in Advanced or Intermediate tier. I can once again be a team captain.
What about teamnames? Do we go with the 0.13 ones or make up some new ones. Suggestions will be appreciated.

Mostly* stolen from E. Albright who stole it from Akhier the Dragon hearted who stole it from ScriptWolf who stole if from Il Palazzo :P ( with his say so ), and scantly updated for Dom4 by the latest OP E. Albright.

*added a bit about staling/AI-iness to how-PBEM-works.
__________

So. I've got a feeling that we've got enough players to get a third game rolling even if it won't be quite a dozen players strong.
Settings are negotiable, my preferences are up in the OP. I'd prefer no disciples but I'm willing to budge if we get six players minimum (2v2v2). Quite undecided on nation/era for now. Also any suggestions for throne ratios are welcome.

I'm currently leaning towards LA Patala.

Other Games / [Giveaway] Dominions 4, OVER! All gone
« on: November 28, 2013, 06:18:51 pm »
What is Dominions 4? It's a fantasy 4X turn-based strategy game. See the dev page for feature list and general blabbery: Official Dom4 Site. It's a pretty big game, 300+ items, 800+ spells, 2,000+ monsters. In other words the AI can't even hope to keep up with all the possibilities and combinations. That's why it has a considerable multiplayer base. There's usually a couple of games running even here in our little corner of the internet we call Bay12. It has a neat hands-off tactical combat and simultaneous turn resolution which means that you can play PBEM games that don't span a decade going from one player to the next.

Just so happens that I'm filthy rich and Gamersgate is having a thanksgiving sale, which includes a modest drop in Dom4 price tag down to 21€ and pocket change. I want to play my part in maintaining a healthy tradition of Dominions multiplayer shenanigans here in Bay12, hence the giveaway.

So, three copies. Up until they're all gone or Gamersgate ends the Dom4 sale, whether that's three hours or three days I don't know.

Of course I can't tell you what to do with your copies but my ulterior motive is to get more people into the local multiplayer scene. It doesn't matter whether you're a Dom3 vet who hasn't made the switch yet or a Dom newbie who's on the fence about it.

No escaped lunatics.
First come, first served.

Other Games / Gamecube recommendations
« on: August 18, 2013, 05:22:22 pm »
Used search, couldn't find an existing thread so here goes. In a spur of decadence I purchased a Gamecube but then hit a wall. What are the must-haves and neat-under-the-radar games for Gamecube? Both GC exclusives and multiplatformers are fine.

I've been wanting to start a new campaign in EB for a while now and what better way to do it than with community participation? A relevant link for those unfamiliar with Europa Barbarorum. Basically it's Rome Total War: Bigger and Better. We would be playing with hard campaign/medium battle difficulty settings. Latest version of EB (v1.2) with Rome: Alexander expansion. Playing with Alexander gives us better AI and few other little tweaks.

There are 20 factions available but to make it a bit easier I'm going to cut it down a bit (no way you're going to get me play as Saka Rauka).

So pick your vote and we'll see what kind of a campaign we can get rolling.

Ladies and gentlemen, let's play Sacrifice!

The Game:
You control a wizard in 3rd person, summon monsters and cast spells in order to banish your opponents. There is a set number of missions in the main campaign, but the twist is that before each mission you can choose which god to serve. There are five gods, so there's a fair bit of replay value. Each mission gives you a new unit and/or spell from the god you're currently serving.

The manual is very well done and contains lots of in-character stuff about the world and the gods we will be serving. It's not mandatory reading but if you're into that sort of thing, well, there's the link.

I will explain game mechanics and such as we encounter them. Without further ado, let's start:

Spoiler: Intro/prologue (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: The Gods Themselves (click to show/hide)

More accurately, the choice will be yours. Below are each gods' WE-WANT-YOU speech coupled with their briefing for the first mission, and a short introduction by me detailing the general style of each gods' spells and creatures.

Spoiler: Recruitment Office (click to show/hide)

I will give you guys a day or two to vote for the first god we will offer our services to before I start playing. Any feedback is welcome.
