Gav Thorpe is also a bit debated.

Ben Counter I haven't heard bad things about though.

I'm sorry, you think Henry Zou is good?

The Emperor's Mercy is absolute garbage.

I've read worse from the Black Library :P The latter books in the Bastion series by Zou also aren't that bad. It ain't no Abnett, but i'd say it's at the 50% mark for quality.

Gav Thorpe gets knocked about quite a bit I think because of the Last Chancers novels. The 1st person perspective is hard to deal with and I originally couldn't get through a single book. I recently tried again though and found that, perspective aside and some occasional poorly executed murder, maim, kill parts, it's a decent series with a good premise. I think those were some of his earlier novels, and his later stuff is better. If you like Dark Angels, Gave Thorpe pretty much writes all their novels.

Dead Men Walking and Down Amongs the Dead Men, both about Death Korps Of Krieg, but that's just me.
Other than that just take anything from The Holy Trinity or their Holy Child. Don't read anything by C.S Goto.

Specifically, I'll say you should either go with Gaunt's Ghost series or read up on Caiphas Cain, but I am IG biased.

Or Matt Ward, unless you like smurfs.

I didn't really see anything wrong with Last Chancers, especially since it has some good imperial-blueberry bits

So I'm not super into Warhammer, but I've read a bit about it, and today I stumbled upon The All Guardsmen Party... a thing. It's a hilarious story about how a group of Imperial guardsmen become effectively the starter Pokemon of the inquisition.

Primary Features:
Incompetent commanders!
Heresy!
Way too many explosives!
Bluffs this big!
Good perimeter security(Though there have been complaints about the land mines in the vents.)
And as always, massive amounts of bloody murder.

Truthfully the only Gav Thorpe novels I've read are the Path of the Eldar ones.
Which were camp as heck. But... maybe not terribly written.

Oh no, we'll drag that assertion down as well.
It's pretty much 60%/40%.
'Some' is safest.

Oh, speaking of TAGP, you could go on 1d4chan wiki which is pretty funny at times (it's /tg/ wiki, so beware of some 4chan humour), and also has lists of various fanfictions... again, beware, there are fapfictions here and actually the whole site has some NSFW (aka PROMOTIONS!) images around.

It's a testament to how wonderfully skilled GeeDubs are that All Guardsmen Party and If The Emperor Had A Text-To-Speech Device are by far the best 40k fiction created in the last decade.

Don't forget that the best GW canon also comes from freelance writers, not actual BL writers

Like which? I mean, okay, it's meant as no serious and nothing that actually happens post-ttsd is what would really happen but before that it holds together really well, even if it diregards some of recent GW fluff because it's fucking stupid (Ollanius Pius hurr).

Mainly its explanation of the War in Heaven and the aftermath, though that particular event is so shrouded in mystery it's impossible to really know what happened. Still.
