What if you have an enemy that gets more powerful the more you shoot it, has a magic maguffin like some not!demon rifle within it and can only be killed with an even more powerful maguffin which the enemy is looking for?

Puzzle enemy eh? Heh. Maybe I make the Freebooter effectively immortal unless they seek out X to slay him with. They'd love that ;)

The response I would take to that as a guy with a ship is to go find Ghazkull Thraka and bait him into invading the Freeboota's place for me, likely wrecking the area for several light years around and probably killing me too.

Most chaos titans could be killed much easier by just bombarding them from orbit anyway, assuming there's nothing you want near them. Crashing anything larger than a cargo shuttle on them is a huge waste.
Get a Nurgle Greater Deamon then.

I just managed to acquire a copy of the Siege of Vraks 2nd edition and I'm squeeing with glee at one of the army options for Renegades in it.

You can field Ogryn Brutes as Troops with one of the commander upgrades.  :D All ogryn, all the time!

It's basically Ogre Kingdoms in 40k guys! All the S5/T5 4+ saves you could want, and with up to 11 attacks each on the charge.  8)

Yes, chaos Ogryn. The best kind of Ogryn.  :)

But yeah, the option to take them as Troops is an upgrade for a Vraks Renegade Demagogue, for 25 points the Demagogue gets +1WS an item that injures Ogryn but gives them Furious Charge and Fleet, and makes Ogryn troops, but Ogryn can't get Objective Secured or score.

Honestly the comparison to Orks is more accurate than you may think.  :P

Most of the Renegades are only BS2 like Orks are, and the horde tactics are shared between the two.

Renegades are like an unholy fusion of Tyranids and Orks, with some added artillery.

So all those Ogryns in a banehammer then?

Maybe, the Ogryn are by far not the best thing Renegades can do, costing 60 points a piece before any upgrades are bought, let alone the cost of a Banehammer on top of that. I just really like the idea of Ogryn berzerkers charging through small arms fire to bludgeon and tear apart their enemies.

Artillery is probably the better purchase since R&Hs can build entire armies of Barrage weapons that leave dangerous terrain where their shots land using the Purge detachment.

EDIT: The Iron Warrior inside me is in love with the stats on a Heavy Quad Launcher (aka Thudd Gun). The things fire four blasts each! With Barrage! Up to 60"!

Here's a fun lore question?
Would it be possible, or feasible, to raid a black ship?
Specifically chaos, if it matters.

I'm given to understand that they're pretty heavily escorted, but how else are you gonna snatch up some young, impressionable psykers?

It is possible, but they have large contingents of Sisters of Battle on them at all times, in addition to whatever forces the Scholastica Psykana and the Ordo Astro Telepathica (or whatever the Astropath faction is called) choose to send to protect them.

It would probably be easier to attack the place that psykers are incarcerated while waiting for a Black Ship to collect them. Most important worlds have large holding facilities where they store their psykers (and those sent by less important worlds that the Black Ships don't visit.)

A lightning or stealth raid on a Hive World could probably snag several thousand unsanctioned psykers of various ages, and there's all the other benefits of attacking a Hive World as well to sweeten the deal.

It's not impossible, but I certainly don't imagine it would be easy. Perhaps you could find one when it shows up once a century to pick up psykers or whatever, but they probably don't broadcast their location or heading much.

Ship wise they're the size of a battle cruiser and can deploy companies of soldiers. Enemy psykers are disrupted by the Occluding Sphere each of them has. The blackships tend to be defended internally by sisters of battle or inquisitorial stormtroopers.

They often have escorts of Imperial Navy or Space Marine ships.

Possible, but far from easy.
