Well, I'm close to breaking through a multi-level aquifer for the first time.

I just had a wereopossum attack the fort a second time (or maybe it was not the same guy, who knows), only to get killed by a war cheetah and a python + a few scrawny marksdwarves. Then, a minotaur arrived. My trained kea army/fodder-python-war cheetah (which is missing a paw and has a few scars from the wereopossum)-pseudomarksdwarf squad-combo quickly dispatched him. It was fun reading through the combat log - at a certain point there was a kea shaking the minotaur by the head.

That kea actually got "named", I think it got the finishing blow on that minotaur :)

Strangely, my crossbowmen show up as axemen instead. Is that normal, or?

They may have had previous experience with axes.

Their militia profession is like their civilian profession, in that it is whatever their highest skill is.

Ah.
It did feel even stranger when there was one spearman in the bow-equipped squad.
They'll still be archers and not try to axe or spear with their ranged weapon, right?

As long as they have ammo.

Good, because I modded my race to be able to mass-produce any weapon or ammo item.
I will have a squad of blowgunmen for the fun of it.

Say, what happens when a monarch dies but they have no next of kin?
Because the queen is boring.
Normally people complain about mandates, but I want some monarch-grade ones, darn it.
So, do nobles go to burrows, or will I have to go an extreme level of science?

Succession is not something that occurs in this version. At least, not outside of world-gen. If the queen dies, no-one will replace her even if she had a child.

There is a DFHack script called 'make-monarch', or some variation of that. It will make the currently viewed dwarf the new monarch.

Nobles respect burrows. It's military that will ignore them.

Ah.
Thanks.
That's extremely helpful.
EDIT/UPDATE: After about 25 seconds of messing with the raws, my fort has war cats.
Let loose the cats of war.

It appears that one of my most trusted soldiers is upset because he lost both of his hands. :-X
I lay my hope on him, let him become a biter with notorious jaws. I gave him a cognomen: Rautaleuka= the Iron Jaw and gave him a very skillful warriortress for a teacher from previous immigrant wave in order to improve his eloquence a little.

also make him a kicker. a kick to the head is no laughing matter and it's also blunt damage, which complements well with the edged bite attack.

Two years later, my master macedwarf still refuses to use a weapon and is now calling herself an Elite Wrestler.

I have walled off the entire map 5 paces from the outer edge in anticipation of paving the edge in obsidian in its entirety. There is only one way to the edge, which is at my fort entrance in the north. I'm in the process of clearing the edge of trees and debris. At one point I uncovered five separate goblin ambushes around various points of the map, and to my shock my military was able to deploy from the fort and kill all the goblins without any civilian casualties. Apparently, when dwarves only have one direction to run, they can actually manage it pretty well. I've since set my troops to patrolling in a big loop around the perimeter.

I only have the vaguest of notions how I'm going to manage this obsidianizing project. It's going to involve timing, since the magma is just going to run off the screen. This is going to be fun.

It is the year 107 in Talkedglove.
The archer towers outside the entrance have been constructed and armed for quite a while now.
Plans are underway for archer towers at each corner of the map, to whittle away sieges. The doors to them will be drawbridges, which, upon message of a siege, will be closed.
