ARMs: Artificial Maidens

Inspired by Haspen's RTD Starlight Mechanized Corps and notquitethere's Superhero Manager. With a bit of obscure and less obscure manga/anime references, and a bit of Maid RPG, all thrown in a pot and overcooked into what you see...

INTRODUCTION

This is the year 450 of the Naeran Calendar. It has now been 40 years since the Impact of the Phantasm Comet on the Moon of Naera, 40 years of a bitter conflict for survival between humanity and the Phantasmal Entities.

When all seemed lost, the apparition of the Maidens gave back hope to the people of Naera: using the powers of the Phantasm Element, these young girls were able to fight and destroy the until then invincible Phantasmal Entities. Thanks to them, the dream of eliminating the Phantasmal threat once for all seemed an attainable reality... until the apparition of the UPI, Unidentified Phantasmal Intelligence, reduced all these hopes to naught by near annihilating humanity. The Naeran only survived because the UPI then disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared.

Now in the current year 450, the Maidens have long since been phased out from the battlefield. They have been replaced by Artifical Maidens, called ARMs, biomechanical combat units near identical in power and appearance to the young girls they were based on. With the announcement of the 2nd Generation of ARMs, the Nagaea Reclamation and Counter-Phantasm Force (NRCPF) hopes to launch a counter-offensive to reclaim the lost territories, and maybe someday completely eliminate the Phantasm Menace.

Quote from: Naeran Timeline
0:
- Colonization of Naera by humans.

410:
- The Phantasm Comet strikes and shatters the Moon of Naera, contaminating it with the Phantasm Element.
- 80% of the Naeran population is wiped out by the fall of the infected shards, and the resulting side-effects of Phantasmal Contamination.

412:
- Confirmed hostile reports of the first Apparitions.
- Confirmed hostile reports of the first Spectres. Conventional weaponry having no effect on them, more territories are abandoned to Phantasmal Contamination upon Apparitions and Spectres sightings.

414:
- The entire surviving population is evacuated from Nagaea, the greater continent, to the southern islands of the Midaram Sea.

422:
- Awakening of the first Phantasmal Girl, before they were called Maidens: Lily Ayame the Maiden of Tiaris.
- In the wake of Lily Ayame's awakening, countless awakenings are reported among young girls born after the date of the Impact. The public starts calling these young girls fighting for the sake of humanity: Maidens.
- Incident Summerfall: Team Blue Summer falls to Phantasmal Contamination, becoming the first confirmed case of Fallen Maidens. They are only stopped by Team White Diamond, after their rampage caused the loss of three Maiden Teams and an entire city.
- Creation of the NRCPF -Nagaea Reclamation and Counter-Phantasm Force- to coordinate the operations of Maidens and prevent the apparition of Fallen Maidens.
- Creation of the NCG -Naeran Central Government-.

422-446:
- The southern coast of the greater continent is completely reclaimed and decontaminated.
- Phantasmal Technology allows for breakthroughs in countless fields, especially in bioengineering, and energy generation.
- The first generation of ARMs -Artificial Maidens- is deployed.
- Maidens are slowly phased out from the frontline.

446:
- Half of Nagaea is reclaimed.

447:
- Appearance of the UPI -Unidentified Phantasmal Intelligence-. Loss of contact with the NCG HQ based in Naegaea, as well as twelve fortified cities of the inner continent.
- Operation Kinghead: the entire NRCPF is mobilized to eliminate the UPI.
- Operation Kinghead ends in a devastating failure. Casualty rate among Maidens and ARMs is 9 out of 10. Casualty rate among standard personel is 99 out of 100.
- The UPI single-handedly reduces the past 25 years of reclamation to nothing, before suddenly disappearing.

450:
- The second generation of ARMs is deployed.

GAMEPLAY

The game will usually be split into two phases: Downtime and Mission.

Mission:
The phase during which your ARMs will fight Phantasmal Entities, help civilians, decontaminate the land, and possibly get maimed, traumatised, or lose their lives in the process.
Once a mission is selected, it keeps progressing without Commander input until the situation deteriorates or an objective is unsuccessfully reached. The Commander will then be able to decide whether to pursue or cancel the operation.

Downtime:
The phase during which your ARMs are supposed to rest, although in practice they may instead get to experience the joys of interpersonal drama, get put through rigorous training to increase their meagers chances of survival and success, or spend time on the operation table or in the incubators to recover from their grievous wounds. If they don't, maybe they will get to relax.

During Downtime, Handlers may assign their ARM to Downtime Activities such as Train or Rest.
Meanwhile, the Commander may use their allocated budget to improve facilities, pay for special treatment, develop equipment, or request new ARMs.

At the end of each Downtime, Maintenance costs are substracted from the team's Budget.

APPLICATIONS

Congratulation Officer, you have been put in charge of managing a team of 2nd Generation ARMs. There are two player roles.

Commander: the commanding officer in charge of an ARM Team. The one in charge of mission selection, team management, and expenses. This position can be swapped with another player at any moment.

Handler: an officer in charge of managing an individual ARM. The one to manage its schedule and routine, and the one responsible for its operational readiness and mental health. Handlers have a veto power, and are able to refuse that their ARM be included in a given Mission.

To join, fill in the player sheet.
We will be starting with a maximum of 3 ARM TEAMS, meaning a maximum of 3 Commander applications will be accepted. If the amount of Commander applications exceed 3, then the Commanders will be randomly chosen and the rest will become Handlers.
If for some reason we only have Handler applications, then Commanders will be randomly chosen.

Quote from: Player Sheet
Name: how are you called?
Desired Role: choose between Commander or Handler
Appearance: what do you look like? It can be as basic as eye color/hair color.
Background: how was your life until now? A survivor looking for revenge? A new idealistic recruit with a dream? A retired Maiden that couldn't give up the fight, even after losing your powers? A grizzled veteran who wants to finish the job?
Personality: what kind of individual are you? How do you see ARMs? Do you see them as humans, as tools?

hi!

Name: Natashia Argis [ACphrl01-EHP45,2 / JFW-custom-4530-F]
Desired Role: Handler

Appearance: A tall and thin woman with red hair and eyes. Robotic artificial arms and leg simulacra rated for civilian work. Always wears a corporate paramilitary dress uniform, modified to shorten the skirt and sleeves. To "keep all the cards on the table" in regards to her robotic limbs. Not so for her robotic torso, but that may just be a modicum of modesty.

Background: Experimental emulated human subject created by the Argis corporation in 445. Previous iterations of the emulated human concept were unreliable in application due to hardware incompatibility and issues relating to multiple instances of the same mind interacting. EHP45,2 utilizes carefully selected "puzzle pieces" extracted from many human subjects, and exhibits a high level of stability and reliability. Further experimentation is necessary, testing how the subject reacts to other kinds of "artificial being" and high-stress jobs.

Personality: Cold and logical, though sometimes drawn to obsession over details or "neat things". Treats ARMs with patient dispassion, but would prefer not to lose any more than necessary.
Likes: Efficiency. Guns. Industrial machinery. Airplanes.
Dislikes: Nothing in particular.

"Can you really have war crimes if there's no war?"

Name: Ray Lanceheart
Desired Role: Commander
Appearance: A smug-looking young man with a tall, athletic build, red hair and eyes, and a mechanical gauntletlike right hand. He normally wears gloves to conceal this latter fact, and fancy red-and-gold or red-and-black military uniforms to let everyone know he's in charge.
Background: The Lancehearts arrived as refugees like everyone else, but soon established themselves as successful entrepeneurs and adventurers. By the time of the Reclamation they were well respected and well established, and went all in on colonization efforts. Ray was born on the islands but spent most of his youth on the mainland assisting with scouting and prospecting efforts, and towards the latter end of the Reclamation led a squad of mundane soldiers equipped with experimental Phantasm-infused weaponry. This experiment's results were far below that displayed by ARMs, but the concept was interesting enough to continue exploring and experimenting with. It was annihilated utterly in the Counterwave alongside everything else, including most of the once-vaunted Lanceheart holdings and a good deal of their number. Ray was lucky enough to merely lose a hand, probably because he was important enough for supporting ARM teams to prioritize evacuating as a quarter century of human civilization disintegrated around them. He had a crude mechanical claw attached so he could desperately do whatever it took when the UPI arrived to exterminate the last traces of humanity on the islands; this never happened, but he's had a sinister edge ever since, and his prosthetic was replaced with a war gauntlet instead of something more civilized.
Personality: Ray believes in the strength of the human spirit and its infinite capacity to develop new things to avenge itself with. He knows full well the Phantasm might be intelligent in some sense and doesn't care- it's his enemy, and that means he and it need to have at each other and drive everything around them to new heights. He views ARMs as humans, which means he views them as tools; all things exist to be useful, and a broken ARM isn't a happy or moral ARM anyway.
Likes: Manmade Horrors Beyond His Comprehension, Warhounds, Chocolate
Dislikes: Phantasms, Cowardice, The Weak

Name: Charles Deer.
Desired Role: Commander
Apperance: A scarred older man, short and wide bodied, but still maintains a fully upright posture.  Loves cigars and is rarely without one.  Deep voice.  Usually wears an old, battered green greatcoat.
Background: Deer hails from a foreign star, arriving via transport in response to the needs of Naera, a famous defensive commander on his homeworld.  There he raised and met conventional forces through decades of war, exercising his tactical skills and abilities.  With the war since ended, and with Naera in need of commanders for a new form of war, the old man decided to put on his jacket once more and fight one last round.
Personality: Deer believes in two things:  The will to defend ones homeland, and the power of surprise.
Likes: Infiltration missions, and packing maximum firepower into the most unexpected of locations.
Dislikes: Fair fights.

Name: Aleksei Vasilyevich Belov
Desired Role: Commander
Appearance: A somewhat pale and freckled young man of modest height, with dark brown hair and stormy eyes.
Background: Although Aleksei is a new recruit and technically has a dream, it would be entirely absurd to refer to him as idealistic. Cynical and a little acquisitive even as a teenager, he made an abortive foray into Maiden command under a false name while still below legal enlistment age, for his own reasons of personal advancement, only to be found out and quietly sent home just in time to avoid being horribly murdered in the UPI event. Taking advantage of the loss of any record of his prior existence, he has now returned to the front under fully above-board conditions.
Personality: Alexei essentially has two competing sides - a romantic youth who genuinely wants to help save the world and hopes to find time to experience the passions of youth while doing so, overshadowed by a much more easily expressed indifference bordering on contempt for nearly everything around him that doesn't directly feed his drive for power and (sometimes arbitrary) vengeance. The Phantasmal Entities have wronged him personally, and that's terrible, so they must be destroyed. He sees the ARMs entirely as tools for enacting this destruction, which is also how he sees Maidens and, indeed, the majority of humanity.
Likes: Power, violence, overwhelming advantage, and romantic stories.
Dislikes: Magical girls, all forms of weakness, and anything that he feels gets in his way.

You know, I had the thought for a General Ripper-like handler but seeing that we already have two commanders perfectly willing to send waves of ARMs to their deaths, I thought I shouldn't add to that fire.

Name: Johnathon Smith
Desired Role: Handler
Appearance: Tall thin man with brown eyes and black hair. perfectly normal and boring to describe
Background: Born during the evacuation of the surviving human populace to the southern islands of Midaram Sea, Johnathon never experienced life without the Apparitions and Spectres that haunted the rest of humanity. Willing to take part in the fight after the sudden appearance and disappearance of the UPI, by ensuring ARMs are treated humanely and as something more than a weapon of war.
Personality: Sees ARMs as human, Generally doesn't want unnecessary harm towards ARMs and personnel, prefers that the magical robot girls do not get ptsd assuming they survive under the command of those commanders.
Likes: Cats
Dislikes: Cruel treatment of ARMs, Causing lasting psychological trauma

thinking of likes and dislikes hard

Name: Jocelyn 'Aegis' Alabaster
Desired Role: Handler
Appearance: A woman who never grew enough to look her age, Jocelyn is still shorter than most of the ARMs at 27. Her hair is long and barely-tamed in a ponytail, while her green eyes seem to fluctuate in shade based on the situation.
Background: Jocelyn was one of the later maidens, not awakening until 434. In that time, however, she earned a reasonably-sized reputation for effectiveness at protecting people on the battlefield, and proved a valuable supplement to both maiden/ARM teams and traditional armed formations. As her powers faded, however, she turned toward studying engineering; as maidens were being removed from the battlefield, it would be the ARMs that took up that burden, and while she might not be able to protect them on the battlefield, she could still help off of it. Then the UPI showed up, and almost everybody she had ever worked with was dead, while she had been safe at base, waiting to repair ARMs when they returned. This had repercussions on her mental state.
Personality: Jocelyn does not see a practical difference between ARMs and 'natural' maidens, but does see both as soldiers rather than civilians; despite this, she is highly focused on making sure that any ARM assigned to her does not die, though this manifests largely as an extreme focus on training. Beneath this strict 'prepare yourself as much as possible' front, however, she is highly empathic for the trials her charge will undergo.
Likes: The act of repairing something, the people she considers to be teammates, speculative fiction, tea
Dislikes: Phantasms, things that are out of place, people dying

Name: Roland Thompson
Desired Role: Handler (Commanders are all taken)
Appearance: Early 20s, messy brown hair and barely shaved face. Looks tired, all the time. Like an overworked office worker, which is how he dresses. Blue eyes, with bags underneath.
Background: Growing up the future looked bright. Technology was advancing, we where winning, soon we would retake the world and we’d need workers instead of soldiers. So his parents set him on an easy path for a job at some tech company, sending him to a nice school where he got good grades. Just as he entered adulthood the world decided to end again, dashing his bright future and forcing him to do whatever he could just to have any future at all.
Personality: Tries to see ARMs as tools for his own sanity, fails. Treats them like coworkers.
Likes: Sleeping, caffeine, guns (everyone likes guns)
Dislikes: Loud noises (except gunshots), late hours, Phantasmal Entities (everyone hates those)

I could, but that would be rude :V

Many of the commander designs are designed around being a commander, and I have no real urge to compete for the spot. So handler it is.
