Yeah.  Lutefisk is really more about the stuff you have it with.  Namely, copious amounts of Aquavit.

Yeah.  Lutefisk is really more about the stuff you have it with.  Namely, copious amounts of Aquavit.

Mostly its eaten with copious amounts of warm butter.  I think it would be much better with Aquavit.

It's not traditional Norwegian food if you're not stone drunk while you're eating it.  How else do you think they stomach this stuff?

I'd say the problem is that most of the norwegians where I grew up also happen to be baptists, so no drinking allowed.  Wheras most of the germans, the other dominant immigrant group in ND, are mostly Lutheran and like to drink like there is no tomorrow.

We make a drink up there that is somewhat similar to Aquavit.  Red eye its called.  Burnt sugar, anise, everclear, and marchino cherries (the eyes) plus some other herbs.  Served mostly at weddings.  Knocks you on your ass.
