So what is Terraria? As far as I can puzzle it out it's a 2d take on Minecraft, but the Steam page and OP aren't terribly descriptive. All I get off the first few pages is talk of compatibility issues, connection woes and key-remap scripting. So why would I want to own it?

This is intended as a serious question, not a crude put-down of the game.

Basically it is metroidvania with a minecraft spin. It is a side scroller sandbox. You can build homes and npcs will come to live in them and you journey reground or mine and explore dungeons and defeat bosses and monsters.

First things first. Never, EVER call it 2dMinecraft if you want to maintain a healthy connection between your arm and chest.
Second, this will open your eyes to the glory that is Terraria.

saying it's like minecraft is like saying Battlefield 3 is like Doom. it's accurate to a degree and references a more famous work.

almost all of the technical issues right now are in multiplayer. For the vast majority, SP is running great.

And once your dude(tte)'s kitted out in single player, you can haul the critter off to someone's server and wreck unholy havoc enjoy a calm and relaxing co-op building experience punctuated by giant eyeballs, giant DOOMSKELETONS, and unending hordes of small green arsekickers. in peace and harmony and random dynamite explosions.

Ain't Terraria grand?

EDIT: Tried Aklyon's server. Got on, lost connection in <1 minute Actually kicked my connection so hard I had to go through a repair cycle on the wireless, heh.

As a side note, has anyone tossed dynamite into a large body of water, yet? It's got a pretty incredible visual effect

Nah, I've been playing it for hours and I don't have anything that isn't made of wood.  The material costs for basic stuff can be pretty outrageous - even with about 50 copper bars, I can't make anything with it yet.

You... might need an anvil. Most expensive in bars for copper is, uh, either the helm or the chain, I forget precisely which. Anyway, it's like 30 bars at max for whichever one it is.

5 iron for an anvil is nice. In the *ahem* demo I remember getting gold swords after having to buy an anvil. Still, HAVE AT THEE FOUR WORM!!! Looking for silver and gold to make armour to kill giant eye.

No, no, Aqi might have had an anvil, and just not been close enough to it, instead. No anvil was the most likely culprit, though.
