I seem to ruin pictures with background. Does this background clutter the scene and make it too dense, or is it alright?

It seems really low-contrast with the figures in the foreground. Like, maybe they need thicker outlines or something? I dunno, I don't wanna give you bad advice on how to deal with it, but my point is that they don't seem to stand out enough.

The spider makes it hard to see the stuff going on in the middle easily. The lunging girl is a bit cluttered by it.

Also the dark background bit isn't in a good place for a dark bit, kinda makes the dark wing bits less powerful.

Not a real artist, just an intuitive feeling about the images.

Look up some exercises for composition and for framing.

The spider

Uh oh

I think what you're looking at is meant to be a throne surrounded by tree branches, heh. The throne itself is a vertebra.

Makes a better tree-throne than a spider, now I see it.

There's a lot of ways you can make the foreground stand out.

Tone, level of detail, color contrast, things like that. Ideally you'd want the background to be more muted in one of those. Were you to color it, I'd suggest vibrant, saturated colors for the girl's wings and the guy's carapace, with more muted browns and grays for the background.

As it is, though, each individual element aside from staff guy's freaky hindleg looks good. Just think about contrast in tone or detail for the next one.

I've not attempted to colour any of the things I've drawn in. How would I go about it? Colouring pencils seem imprecise in my imagination, but I suppose I'm wrong to eschew them?

The reason the imagery looks jumbled is because lines are intersecting, which makes your brain want to connect them into one shape. Plus similar shapes and shades between the foreground and background can make them want to blend together.

You can try thickening the outlines of the characters who are in the foreground.

I wish I could tell you. I'm rubbish with anything but ink in traditional media. There should, in theory, be a way to blend colors with them like anything else, but I've only done color digitally so far. Maybe when I have more disposable income.

I've heard Strathmore has a lot of videos about it on youtube if you can tolerate their bias towards their own brand of paper.
