Making Useless Labors Useful--Version 0.2
« on: September 19, 2012, 01:54:04 am »

The purpose of the mod I intend to create here is to make useless skills less useless .

First, I need to know what skills are useless, then I need semi-realistic ideas of reactions, weapons, or whatever I would add to make them useful. Please help with both parts.

Spoiler: List of ideas so far (click to show/hide)

I have started work and released all I have made so far. It includes:

making concrete could be a more efficient way to make blocks, or alternatively, could make a reaction that makes water+lava at the same time. (Would that even work?  ??? )
Bee keeping isnt really a non-useful thing as I see it, honey is a very useful product and does not go bad. (whether or not it does in game however I do not know)
Honey has been used in the past to preserve some foods as well, I remember hearing about people pickling apples with honey or some such.

Do wax crafts exist as current?
wax and soap toys wouldn't be a bad idea.
Pressing soap would most likely be able to do something, like returning soap to oils to be used else where

The bee armor might be onto something actually, bees naturally make their hives don't they? Wait no I'm thinking paper wasps perhaps.
Either way, it might be able to get paper/fabric from bees somehow, but anything that would be able to actually protect you would likely need a fair bit more work.

Wax has been used with leather in the past to make a hardened leather http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiled_leather
Soap could be used in a similar fashion I suppose as well, being a near-wax substance, its only downside would be its reaction to water.

Fish and animal dissectors - stuffed bodies used as statues? making undeads from body parts?
*Urist McFrankenStein looses a roaring laughter, fell and terrible!*

Soap bubles cannon!!

EDIT2:
wax + thread = wax candle
candles + metal candlestick = decorative biulding

Dont forget 3 times fish labors on maps without fish/water, animal caretaking and animal bisecting. I would be careful with bee keeping, because these guys rather run out into the open, instead of running reactions in custom buildings. same with fishing. If you make a "fish" reaction, the fisher will still run out to a pond, instead to your buildings.

I use pressing a lot at the screw press, for paper pulp, pressing water or oil from plants...  You could also take pressing in a more industrial manner, to press materials into a denser state, like coal into diamonds, sawdust into laminated wood, or to densliy pack items (press 5 stones into one "block", stockpile it. Effectivly removes 49 items, gives more fps. If you need the items back, "open" the block again, produce 50 stones)

Soapmaker is really bad, I'd rather rename it to chemist, as opposed to alchemist. I did however add batch reactions to the soapmaker once, but that results in even less work for the soapmaker.

Cheese Making-- Simply make more type of cheese. I have cave fungus, a rock that can be made into cheese, or blood goats/boozebelly goats, that give special milk and cheese. Or refine your normal cheese with special ingredients, to make more valuable meals.

Wax Working- for wax crafts, candles... mh... maybe waxing leather or wood to increase the value/durability. Wax statues (Madam Tuessauds) sound resaonable, the same goes for "upgrading" furniture. Simply polishing and restoring the old wooden chair to new glory ;) Oh yeah, and take dye+wax = pen, and wax was used for sigils, on letters :) and wrappings on mummies.

Beekeeping-- forget it, because of the AI change.

Anyone forgetting PROSE, TRACKING, and most of the non-labor/combat skills?

Prose isn't something I've ever seen in-game.

I'll take all suggestions under consideration. And I know that I can only supplement vanilla stuff.

Those have no value ingame... you can use them for reactions, but since you cant enable or disable the skill, and the skill is not shown, it will just result in any dwarf running the reaction. same result as leaving no skill in the reactuio anyway

Can you use workshop profiles to limit that, once you have a good enough writer?

You could. You could also tie the skill into another one. In a mod I'm considering coding, I plan to have Writer + normal skill to generate a book. Labor is determined by the book being generated, and both writer/normal skill get some experience. That process would generate a manuscript, which then has to go to an editor which would use labor+wordsmith to fact check. He can either accept it (5% chance), or send it back for revisions. This continues until an edited book is generated which can be installed in a library workshop (and controlled via Profiles).

Is your plan really to flush water into hell, and have the CARP marines fight them without threat of flame or disease?  If so, you are awesome, and one of the greatest DF military visionaries I've seen yet ( not that I've seen that many, or any, for that matter )
