Isn't scotch just a type of whiskey?
The foul-tasting one, as opposed to delicious bourbon.
Whiskey, whisky, scotch, and bourbon are four different things.

EDIT: And then there's rye as well, because rye the fuck not.

Scotch is short for Scotch whisky

He did a full Fortunato in a Cask of Amontillado

What's the phrase? "Don't shop while thirsty"? Yeah, close enough...

Came back with four bottles and a can of beer. None of them are the particular porter I was looking for (which is sold out).

I did actually manage to find an oude gueuze though, so now I can blame someone else when I don't like a lambic.

I'm curious and willing to take the blame :D
Fuck.

Right, so, due to some storage difficulties (having to tilt the bottle in order to extract it from the fridge) and a somewhat greedy pour, I'm pretty sure some of the sediment remained in the beer, as it got a little hazy.

Still though, that's not quite what I would describe as a "pleasant" experience. I'm open to "horsey, barnyard flavor with an element of hay", but this was just "what if we took lemon peel and added brake fluid?". An intense whack of sour nipple-twists rounded off with a quinine-coated thumbtack is not quite what I had in mind for the evening's sip.

Dark beer plus slightly lighter amber beer, the different alcoholic weights causing them to separate into distinct layers. Looks quite fancy.

It's also the colloquial name for the Royal Irish Constabulary Special Reserves, a delightful band of lightly-trained thugs rounded up by Churchill so that they could get more disposable meat to fight the IRA and subdue the populace during the Irish War of Independence. Just in case you wanted to round out the evening's cultural appreciation after referencing the IRA with an Irish carbomb.

Ah, I thought it was intended/traditional to avoid the sediment with gueuze. Bottle also said not to store it sideways. I figured the sediment might have thrown off the taste from what it was "supposed" to be, and thus I'd gotten the wrong kind of experience.

Good to know then! I mean, I usually try and grab the sediment, but I read somewhere that lambics are traditionally served without.

Oh geez this port has way too many sulphites, really shouldn't have compromised on the cost. Goes great with lamb stew though

Treating myself to a funny little beer... Rye malt brewed with a traditional Kveik yeast. It's only about 7%, but it's got this very interesting malty, "grain-y" flavor thanks to the rye base.

The name is, appropriately, Kveika Rugøl... "Kveik-ed Rye Beer"
