In the book its written as if Luther is trying to save the planet, and he is, but its fairly obvious he a dirty dirty heretic.  But one of the last lines suggested the terran sorcerors were trying to banish the taint of the world by binding the demonworm.  Sooo?

The point at which I knew about Oll, he'd already been made a Perpetual. So I've always looked at the Oll-Love askance, because to me the Perpetuals storyline is a distraction. At times it feels like fanfic the way all the rules get broken. (Not to mention the fourth wall on occasion.) Like, I get irritated with John Grammaticus because it'd be way more 40k, and I'd respect him more, if every time the Cabal rezzed him he went "HUMANITY FUCK YEAH" and killed himself. So yeah. I prefer defiance over time and immortality wank. There's a reason the Emperor is and has been an inaccessible figure for pretty much the entirety of 40k. He's more fucking interesting that way. None of that shit made much sense to me either. The best I've gathered (after two reads of the series) is that there's three factions: The Lion, Luther and Terra. All three are engaged in stuff they shouldn't be. The Lion does it because he is the Lion and is a sneaky fuck who takes nothing off the table. He's not going to let this knowledge slip by him. Luther, who both knows he has to surpass the Lion to beat him at some point, who is the beloved native son of disgraced Dark Angels and disgruntled Calibanites alike and who is always probably been genuinely twisted on some level and falls to Chaos fully later. He's trying to stop the Worm as well for both the right and the wrong reasons. And then you have Terra, who split between actual loyalists and those with their own agenda for REASONS!!1111. I don't recall off the top of my head what that's about, but know that sort of inexplicable changing of sides will happen more on Caliban later.

And then into the mix you throw people like Lord Cypher, who I'm honestly not sure who the fuck he works for. It seems like he works for the Lion ultimately, but not always. He clearly has a grasp on Warp Magic too. It's even further fucking complicated in a much later story with another long-standing character in the post-compliance history of Caliban.

Basically the only pure Dark Angel is Nemiel and:

He dies in in three sentences when the Lion just up and punches his head off his shoulders. I didn't like Nemiel but I think he deserved something a little better than what basically amounted to dying off screen. It happens so suddenly and casually and is not dwelt on much if at all afterwards. It's like someone wanted him ejected from the storyline in a big way. Even Nemiel isn't perfect though. He plotted to assassinate the Emperor at one point!

The thing I've taken away is this: if it's on Caliban, whatever it is, it's about keeping secrets, double crosses and heresy. Doesn't matter who you are, if you're on Caliban you're being bad according to 41st millennium dogma. Luther is a heretic and traitor, virtually all the Dark Angels under him are traitors, the Lion is a heretic at the very least and plenty of the Terrans on Caliban are both traitors and heretics. No one's hands are clean, least of all the Lion. I will say one thing about the HH novels as far as the Lion goes. I never really got how mysterious and secretive he was or why it was literally a trait passed down to his Chapter. It just seemed like some cool shit to say to draw in kids and teenagers. (It probably was and it worked.) The HH novels have delivered for me on showing how the Lion keeps secrets, purposefully keeps people in the dark, covets advantage and who I think is generally the least likeable Primarch among the loyalists. Dorn may be kind of a dick but at least he's honest.

Maybe it's the worm itself. Maybe it literally injects secrecy into the soil, air and water of the planet so everyone and everything becomes infested with it. We know its influence was enough to twists all the beasts in the forest. Maybe the worm hiding beneath the earth is a metaphor for the secrets hiding beneath the Dark Angels. Or vicea versa.

How are the audio novels generally, anyways? I've always wanted to get some but the voice acting is also so damn hammy in video games, I don't know if I could listen to a whole novel worth of it.

Maybe the Dark Angels' secrecy is related to the Alpha Legion's secrecy? They're the first and last legions, respectively, and Alpharius Omegon's name comes from Alpha and Omega - the beginning and the end.

Depends on who is reading them.  I liked the guy reading the Fallen Angels book, but some of them are too raspy.

I generally dislike people trying to enact the books instead of reading it, though.  Too hammy, youre right.  Sometimes they try to enact pain and it sounds like breathlessness honestly.

Yeah. There's just so many different authors and kinds of stories out there I feel like it'd be a total gamble on whether or not I could deal with the reading style of each voice over. Maybe it's because they consider themselves voice actors rather than just voice overs. I dunno. After playing Darkest Dungeon and hearing the mellifluous Wayne June, I ran down all his Lovecraft readings because he's just gives it the right treatment. So sometimes voice acting for novels has its place. Just....not 40k I think. Most of the time I hear 40k in any medium it comes with a fair amount of cringe.

been wanting to ask what alpha legion actually does with their time -who they worship whers they live or if they were even corrupted after 10 thousand years but i suspect the answer will be lacking

Nobody really knows, as they do so much shit that they're literally working against themselves on daily basis. The best bet was that they were fragmented and split into loyalists and not loyalists, but new fluff seems to be a bit weird now, as both Alpharius and Omegon are supposedly dead... but still, the Janus theory is there and Grey Knights are basically almost confirmed to come from the Primarch (without specialities and stuff, so just really generic super-marine) geneseed stolen by Alpha legion for Horus, but Horus got fake one, so really... Alpha legion are the Schrödingers heretics, you never know if they're loyalist or heretic until you open the Rhino.
TBH, they could as well be just working for themselves, which seems like a pretty reasonable option.

Depends. While the standard ones are indeed described as Plasmas, with the amount of standarization the Navy has, ships could be as well armed with anything from regular nuclear warheads to Melta torpedoes or Vortex ones that tear rifts into Warp.

In general - transcluent bubble, with hazing (similar to the effect hot air above roads has) effect. When hit they ripple and make a lot of pretty colours, with energy flares on more powerful hits.
The ship ones are more like teardrops and seem to be invisible indicating a better quality. The effect on hit is the same.
