Sledge? That's just brutal. Use a combustible lemon instead.
A Ford pinto?

Edit: I started reading East of Eden about a week ago. Bloody hell, what an excellent book. Plenty of sadness and other emotion mixed up in with the Happy, mind you, but that's the case with most any book worth getting excited about.

Ooh. May I recommend Armor if you haven't read it. It's an extended emotional gut-punch. Less happy that. You described, but still good imo.

John Steakley's Armor? Seconding the recommendation, provided you like war fiction.

Oh, so that was the one you meant?
I was rather confused after googling the title, heh.

The name is unfortunately vague, yes. It's similar to Haldeman's The Forever War (and, to a lesser extent, All You Need is Kill by Sakurazaka Hiroshi) in the sense that it gets described a version of Starship Troopers with a more critical view of war.

Sounds like a real snooze, but DB recommended it so I shall keep an eye out for a copy. I've liked plenty of books I expected to loathe in the past. *shrug*

I glanced over and thought I saw someone had just started reading East of West and agreed that it is a fantastic story before seeing it was actually the book it is kinda loosely based on which hopefully means it is full of gunslinging apocalyptic horsemen, badass gunslinging statesmen, the only Mao you'll ever root for, plus a little kid and his balloon.

As I've never read said book, due to the remarkably huge holes in my literary background, I'm going to hope this is the case.

Also made my first box with dovetail joints but instead of doing several little ones I felt like trying out great big single tails and paired pins, it came out ok but a couple of the pin cuts weren't as neatly aligned as I thought they were so I had to fake tighter joints by deliberately making the side tails for the bottom panel oversized to lock the rest together.

It's got a nice solid chunky feel but the misaligned tail on one side annoys me. At least the saw worked wonderfully and I know the error was due to technique rather than technology.

Is East of West the comic series? Or were the comics based on a book?

It's the comics, and I recall they're sorta based on East of Eden which is kinda based on some old book called the bible or something?

the only Mao you'll ever root for
If all you told me about Mao was the beginning of his story I would definitely root for him.

Well the ending of that Mao was... odd, but the one I'm talking about is a bit further out along the family tree: http://readcomiconline.to/Comic/East-Of-West/Issue-1?id=2538
