Just saw Batman Begins and the Dark Knight. Both are awesome!

However if you are looking for classic films then:
Clerks
Gold Finger
Die Hard
Requiem For A Dream
Evil Dead Trilogy (Hail to the King baby! Basically Duke Nukem stole all his catch phrases from here.)
2001
Death At A Funeral
Chungking Express
Battle Royale
Akira
Best in Show
Breakfast at Tiffany's

In fact just go see the 1001 movies you must see before you die site.

I like your taste, although a lot of those movies are actually fairly new.

I don't know what to recommend that hasn't been recommended already, although obviously, if you see one and like it then find others with the same director. That should go without saying, though.

Really, it depends too much on what you're into. I could recommend anything from "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" (from I don't know when, but prior to 1920) to "Girl, Interrupted". It really depends on what sort of stuff you like.

This can be surprisingly useful: http://www.whattorent.com/

Descent

Beware that this movie is basically gore porn, with attractive women no less.  I didn't know that when I saw it and left the theater feeling kind of sick, and that never happens to me.

Aliens. Required for ALL DFers.

That's the same as "Alien?" I actually tried to rent that last night but Blockbuster didn't have it.

Thanks for all the suggestions keep 'em coming. Also I forgot my only restriction, no damn anime, except by the dude that made Spirited Away.

Aliens is the sequel to Alien and they're both excellent.

Miyazaki (Spirited Away guy) is mostly okay but Nausicaa is definitely not for people who dislike most anime.

While we're talking anime movies, Paprika is an absolute mindfuck (in a good way) and avoids most anime cliches.  If you're into cyberpunk, Ghost in the Shell is as close to a good cyberpunk movie as you'll ever see.

Die Hard was already mentioned, but it's THE action movie.

Braindead (AKA Dead Alive) invented the rom-zom-com (romantic zombie comedy) before it was popularized by Shaun of the Dead, and did a better job of it too.  It's nonstop action right from the start, it's filled with hilariously over-the-top gore, it has great characters, and it was directed by Peter Jackson of LOTR fame.

Das Boot.  It's U-571 without the Hollywood.  Watch the full 5-hour version.

Good/Bad/Ugly was already mentioned.  Clint Eastwood is also great in Where Eagles Dare.

Miller's Crossing and Once Upon a Time in America are two outstanding (and different) takes on Depression-era mob violence.

Oldboy and La Femme Nikita are both enjoyable action dramas.  Oldboy in particular has a very strong plot.

Descent was gory, but never seemed to me to be going for the gore shock value.  The gore was simple necessary in those scenes to convey the utter horror of the moment.  just my opinion.

Brotherhood of the Wolf
Bang Rajan
Black Hawk Down
Gladiator
Cloverfield
Godzilla - the original movie
Vampire Hunter D
Ninja Scroll

Aliens is the sequel to Alien. Is commonly regarded as better than the original as well.

I bought a copy a few days ago for 5 bucks, along with some other oldies. How many people here know WHY it should be required watching? Don't reveal it, just a yes/no.

I also recommend Clue for the zany humor.

I'm going to say it's the ideological basis of most first-person shooters ever made, but that's not your idea.

Cloverfield?   Cloverfield didn't strike me as particularly awesome...   Then again, I'm picky.  Things have to sort of make sense.

Waking Ned Devine
-Classic Irish film, I'd consider it a must-see.  The accents may require you to watch with subtitles though...   They're thick as lard pudding.

Serenity
-If you're familiar with the "Firefly" TV series, you probably already know about Serenity.  Still though, good film, and I recommend watching it even if you haven't watched the series (I hadn't watched the series before the film, and I still liked it).

I enjoyed Cloverfield, although it was colored with my normal annoyances with organic matter taking tank rounds.

My favorite action:
Terminator 2: Robots + time travel + cool effects
Iron Man: Robot + believable science fiction + excellent acting
Conan: Believable villain + big muscles + big sword + nice soundtrack + amateur actors with excellent acting

Favorite not-so-actiony:
Forrest Gump
Back to the Future
The Pursuit of Happyness
Hitch

I just didn't get the parasites.  First off, they don't look/act like parasitic creatures.  Second, how they hell (and why?) would they cause such a peculiar reaction in humans?

And yes, the big baddie himself was remarkably well-protected, even though he didn't seem to have so much as a single plate of armored carapace on his squishy little body.

EDIT:  The action list above has some fine titles in it, but I'd like to supplement one other reason for Conan.  Namely, awesome random sex scenes.

Hush, the Great Toad is listening. But the randomness of it all was funny, especially the ones that were followed with combat.
Not if you get the censored version.

For a more literal take on 'awesome', as in something that will fill you with awe, go check out Paradise Now. It's a movie I recommend to nearly everyone, and no-one ever goes on to watch it, because of what it's about. It's a movie about two friends who just so happen to be suicide bombers in Palestine. It lead to the most surreal movie-going experience of my life - cue the ending scene, the credits roll, and a theatre full of 200-300 people were frozen to their seats in absolute silence. No-one dared to move or even breathe loudly until the credits had finished.

Now that was a movie.

Seen it, and it was fucking amazing. I actually saw it right before traveling to Palestine and it didn't have quite the impact, but then I watched it last spring after having been to many of the places where it was filmed and it pretty much had that effect on me and my friends. Everybody should see this movie.

Again thanx for tha suggestions

To the growing masses of impressive movies, I put forward these three.

West Side Story (Old but awesome musical)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (What may be the best Indiana Jones)
Princess Mononoke (Japanese style animation by Hayao Miyazaki)
