Anyway, I've got a demolitionist, so I suppose blowing up shadoworbs is just a question of how much mining I'm willing to do for cash.  Are gemstones necessary for anything but Phaseblades (which I won't be seeing for a while)?

You could go online and participate in a boss fight, or you could just ask for some gear

Frankly I haven't had too much difficulty with the Eye. The first time I was fighting with iron armour, a silver helmet, and an iron bow (w/ wooden arrows) + plenty of glowing mushrooms. It ran off with 15 HP or so left. The second time I had full gold and a boomerang. Haven't seen it since.

If you're having trouble fighting something like the Eye, I wouldn't recommend going for meteorite. Getting swarmed by meteor heads hurts. Mine for some better basic equipment first.

I would actually recommend the underground jungle for getting equipment (thorn chakrum, blade of grass, cobalt armor if you're really lucky). If you know how to do it, you can kill anything there with no danger.

Got this on release day. It is pretty awesome... I've been building my castle in the best Metroidvania style I can. I do it in an independent world, not the ones I adventure in, just in case. I don't really have a floorplan of any kind, just make it as I go... yeah I'm no map designer.

However one thing that irks me is that different brick types can't easily mix. Background walls are OK because you can cover the seams with doors and those wooden step thingies, but the brick themselves just look detached from each other.
