30-40 minute drive home from work got turned into two and a half hours by a storm last night when sleet flash-froze on the untreated roads and heavy snow built a layer of slush on top. A two-minute stretch of steep hills turned into two hours because people kept getting stuck. It's happy because it was a nice civic-spirit moment; folks who lived along the hills were turning out in droves to help push cars, toss salt and sand between cars as they passed, &c. Plenty of good exercise too since I helped with four or five. Last one was a real laugh -- another driver, me, and six or seven guys who had turned out to help spent a solid twenty minutes trying to get this girl's sedan up the hill. We had our floor mats out, someone was sanding under our feet for traction, she was in low gear and gunning it, but we still made almost no progress. Eventually someone brought out a flashlight and happened to notice that the rear wheels were locked. Turns out we were making no headway because she'd put the parking brake on when she started sliding back downhill and had forgotten to take it off.

Thankfully, made it home safe with a good shot of cheer about the positive side of humanity and got drunk while wrapped up in blankets and heating pads. Had a laugh about the SUV drivers who sat in their vehicles honking at stuck cars instead of helping, too. Good stuff.
