As a counterpoint, humans understand that fire=danger.

Hm.

This made me think; in future Dwarf Fortress, this problem will probably be gone. But, there will also be many versions of Dwarf Fortress by that point. All the different releases may be seen as prototypes. So, Dwarf Fortress Parallel universes, moving forwards in time until perfection. Evolution, if you will.

So, is our universe merely a prototype of some unfathomable being? And, if we are constantly being updated with new versions (Ours probably being out of date by now) will the end result be the final step in the journey to heaven?

This is why I love bay12 you can start up a relgiousy conversation and it doesn't instantly turn into a flaming war of death. <3
And it leads into whether or not we're smarter or less smart than DF dwarves.

And another point.

Will the universe be a program made by the Toad, or his cosmological equivalent? Kinda blows God, the program, out of the water for Grandeur.

Quite. So, this programmer would have built-in needs to see how he could make us survive.

We have God as the enforcer of the program, creating the world rugged and harsh, food, associated properties and raws. In fact, perhaps civilization is built in world gen, and we are stuck into it. The fun part is seeing if we keep this civilization, or break it as we do from time to time.

I'm just enjoying how comparable the universe is to Dwarf Fortress.

We have the problem of flaws in the universe? Why would God do this? Well, we're in an outdated prototype world, of course? Evil? Why, adds t o the !!Fun!!

Really, it removes any moral problems associated with God. Christians should thank me for making this God-program equivalency.

You know, we had 'God is Good', 'God is Evil', 'God doesn't care'... what about 'God doesn't even know of us?'

Going by the wacky theory, he could very well just be screwing with people to see how they would react without even knowing we're capable of thought.

So yes, I've combined 'Universe is a program', 'God doesn't care' and the p-zombie problem into one bundle of crazy. I'm awaiting my honoris causa in philosophy.

We are doomed. It's just that whatever is going to kill us all just happens to be, from a scientific standpoint, pretty frickin' awesome.

Man, this conversation is reminding me just how long it's been since I've contemplated or even cared about any of this.
Personally, I think I'm starting to lean closer to reincarnation at this point, but that's off-topic.

On the God debate, I think I believe more so in the "God doesn't intervene" category. Not that God doesn't care, just that nothing is done about it.

I don't think I like a God that doesn't care personally. Sounds rather arrogant.

But other than that, scrdest, I want at least a mention in the future philosophical genius which will be your creation.

May Dawkins see it and tremble, for his doom is upon him!

That's not arrogance. It's only arrogance if you have good reason to care.
But when the things you're supposedly meant to care about are little collections of numbers in a simulation it's hardly arrogant to not care about their wellbeing.

I don't see why God can't be the Devil. That'd explain all that talk about trials and temptation.
Pretty sure this is close to canon. The bible doesn't say that Satan is a devil with horns and lives in a flaming Hell; in fact, he asks God's permission to put Job through trials.
