The hardcoding of the game, unfortunately, does little to support that. There's no good way to "store" or "summon" creatures as an adventurer. You can be sure that if Toady ever makes that possible, we'll make it happen.

Besides, I find the idea of a hatchet-wielding squirtle hunting down an Ogre's lair to be just as, if not more, appealing :)

Yeah, I think if I wanted to go that route the best I could do is have the player "catch" pokemon by learning various transformations, and then carry around a sack of chickens or something to throw and transform. Hilarious, maybe, but not quite the flavor I'm shooting for :P

Possible idea:

When you try to make an animal trainer, should the pokemon he trains be sentient, like the tiger men that the elves tame that you can buy and sell, not exactly amazing, but they are still able to work around the fort...you know, this might be a way to improv the "catch" system with pokeballs in fortress mode, the cages they get thrown in always a master ball :P

You don't need to have pokeballs; you can set it before they were invented.

You do need to be able to catch and train creatures somehow, though.

Aren't there color variations to pokemon? Like wasn't there a red or gold Gyarados or something. If your trying to follow the pokemon lore closely wouldn't that make more sense than giant/people pokemon?

Could you just make the trainers elves and give them reanimation?

Shiny's are already implemented, actually- currently a 1/1000 chance for a given body part, which is significantly higher than the games but still pretty damn unlikely to see in any given game. So Bulbasaur's might be a different color, Charmander's can be gold, and Squirtles can have a green shell instead of brown.

Thanks to the brilliant Hugo of course. Leapt over an evolutionary hurdle today, so Fort mode alpha should be coming soon!

Thank you, but there is a small issue with 3rd evolve forms, I will explain a workaround in PM

Old Greg's been busy, but we're still shooting for a Fort Mode release sometime soon. Currently, I'm doing additional testing on the Pokemon Old Greg's been working on, and making small modifications to flesh them out (har!) I'll update Adventure mode along with Fort to include the new stuff.

Sneak Peek!

-Caterpie/Weedle- Both spray silk with String Shot, which can be harvested to make silk items. Weedle can also poison you with his sting, although it is rather weak and less than incapacitating. That poison is one of the things I'm testing today.

-Moltres/Articuno- A new pair of Megabeasts to slay! Both are Tamable in Fort mode, and are powerful allies- both are rather likely to wipe the floor with you in Adventure Mode.

-Tweaks to the Elemental Weakness system- notably, some elements cause mild status effects. Ice/Electric can cause paralysis, Fire can give nasty burns in the form of blisters, etc. Another thing I'm testing before release.

And I know more than that will be in the Fort Mode release, since at the very least he'll have evolutions for the Charmander line in. Once I finish fussing over the little details here, I'll be getting on the rest of the evolutions for currently implemented Pokemon as well as a method for evolving in Adventure Mode.

This song is rather conducive to Pokemon modding, I've found. It's how I know I've spent 6 hours on this over the last few days.
