I never knew engravings could be legendaries... Until today.

Also, in other news... More Let's Game It Out. When the video started out, I thought it was going to be a pretty standard one, kinda cliché. Just a bunch of bombs.

I was wrong.

I already knew this, but when I peeked through the source code for Doom for code examples, I witnessed this thing of beauty again:

Code: (m_random.c) [Select]
//
// M_Random
// Returns a 0-255 number
//
unsigned char rndtable[256] = {
    0,   8, 109, 220, 222, 241, 149, 107,  75, 248, 254, 140,  16,  66 ,

    120, 163, 236, 249
};

int rndindex = 0;
int prndindex = 0;

// Which one is deterministic?
int P_Random (void)
{
    prndindex = (prndindex+1)&0xff;
    return rndtable[prndindex];
}

int M_Random (void)
{
    rndindex = (rndindex+1)&0xff;
    return rndtable[rndindex];
}

void M_ClearRandom (void)
{
    rndindex = prndindex = 0;
}

That's right, Doom doesn't have anything resembling an RNG algorithm! It's literally a lookup table. Every time it needs to get a value from the RNG, it increases an index by 1, then reads off the number at that index in the lookup table. I'm oversimplifying; there's a bitwise AND pointer in there, but I don't think it's very random regardless. It's just gotten funnier now that I vaguely understand what's going on here.

there's a bitwise AND pointer in there

You were right on it being a bitwise AND. It sets the index back to 0 when it reaches 256:
(1 0000 0000) & (0 1111 1111) = 0 0000 0000

It leaves the lowest 8 bits as they are, so it's equivalent to mod 256.

The nonrandomness is what allows Doom to record and play demos.

I... what? What kinda nuclear speed demon shit is this where you can't even use modulo? Carmack was right when he said there literally were no compiler optimizations.

Also, I guess that's contextual what that "&" means, is it? &x is read as "address to pointer of variable x", (x)&0xFF is read as "bitwise AND of variable x with hex FF", and I suppose (&x)&0xFF is "bitwise AND of pointer address to variable x with hex FF". I'd have no clue what you're supposed to be doing with that last one.

My kid, which always play as the villian on his games, insists that we should move near or inside a volcano. And that he will once he grows up.

He was also thrilled when certain cartoon villain stole the moon and suggested we should do it but for real....

Should I worry? Hahahaha
