If by "joke" you mean the amusing typos in that post, then nope.
I was nodding off as I typed that on my phone, haha. I was trying to keep myself awake by doing something.
For those concerned, I did manage to stay awake and make it to the right stop after all that. Hooray.

Good for you! I know that I nodded off in the back of a bus and ended up going past my stop, though luckily buses travel in loops, so I caught it on the rebound (and my town is fairly small, and bus people are usually nice, so I didn't get anything stolen while I was out :P). Scared the crap out of me when I work up though. :P

So there was a new thing on wikileaks today about the safety (or rather, lack thereof) onboard the UK's nuclear-armed Trident subs.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/defence/11611270/Navy-whistleblower-claims-Trident-is-disaster-waiting-to-happen.html
In short, it sounds like through a combination of lack of proper maintenance and carelessness, they're likely to cause a nuclear disaster at a moment's notice.

And nobody was surprised. Or at least, nobody should be.

Of course, the easiest way to solve this would be to scrap the subs completely and not have nukes, but wait! We NEED  nukes for the non-existent country that will invade us if we don't!
Really you only need two countries on opposite sides to have nukes (though they have to have enough to wipe out each other) to totally keep each other in check. Beyond that having more just makes it more likely that at any given point you will have at least one nuclear country on the opposite side of any given conflict than another.

Island country m8y, Britain was the only country in WWI that could've lost in a day and lost without having a single enemy soldier set foot on Britain. To ruin a nation such as Britain, all you'd need to do is close a few important sea lanes. One is all you really need, to be honest.

Fixed.
Trident is basically owned by the US.

There were reports many years ago of oranges that produce THC as well.

this is only scary to people who have panic attacks over psychotropic compounds, and who get their panties all tied up and wet over the idea that these compounds will cease being rational to regulate.  In short, moral panic type people.

More rationally, the dangers of this new yeast will simply be that people can become very intoxicated by an infection of this yeast. It will just prompt more effective antifungal treatments for yeast infections, and will lower the costs of manufacture of high quality morphine, which is a useful precursor to a large number of very useful pharmeutical compounds.

The dangers of misuse of this new organism are mitigated naturally by the consequences of that misuse-- people who misuse it will end up comatose, and possibly die.

Sane and rational people would not misuse this organism. I fail to see the reason to feel terrified by it.

Rationality is a thing people are fond of preaching but not practicing earnestly. Sanity is a thing humans are not, on a whole, fond of having all the time. Why temporary insanity is an excuse for crimes, especially those of passion.

I consider myself a sane and rational person. I do not have any plans to misuse this organism. I can think of no legitimate reason TO misuse this organism. Misusing the organism would have similar effects to misusing opium poppies-- Those that doe so, incur their own punishment through misuse.

For those that are honestly exposed to the organism and end up poisoned, I have some measure of concern, but for those that would seek to grow it explicitly to produce morphine, to produce high power morphine derivatives, like Heroin, the difficulties in keeping the organism contained and the resulting outbreaks of toxicity that it would cause would greatly curb its misuse, naturally.
