I played Doom 3 again and even though the graphics are dated that shit is absolutely terrifying. Fantastic horror game.

It's easy to disagree about genre definitions, but even the first games emphasized ammo scarcity, creepy atmosphere, and being surprised by monsters.  Doom 3 was actually a very loyal reimagining in that way, flashlight-thing aside. 

Doom 4 - sorry, "DOOM" leaves those survival-horror roots to focus on how we tend to *remember* Doom 1 & 2.  The speedrun/deathmatch experience of those games, you could say.  Until you memorize the maps, those games involved a lot of hunting for keys and secret ammo caches.

Not that DOOOOM is bad for doing that, it looks like a good game.  Kinda a self-parody, but the Doom "story" certainly ran its course long ago.

I've never played any Doom but I've never gotten the impression that it is anything that a straight up shooty shoot shoot.
