You have total support. Will you accept dorfings? If so, dorf me in please.
Also, can I add to the narrative? I'm a story teller at heart and I love to add my own mayhem- er, "perspective" on in game events
Give me Loman, dorf me as Ryukan if you can
Nice artwork!Thank you :D
Werebeasts do love to eat toddlers, don't they?
Apparently they evolved a taste for everything I love and care about :(I'm sigging that.
If you get a scribe, I'd like him to getI kind of requested this a while ago...dorfedhumaned (?) as Saren Settren, a devoted archivist with too many ideas and not enough common sense - and occasionally, far too much extra time on his hands.
Think "ethical mad scientist".

Ah, ok. I hadn't actually realized "scribe" is a noble title... a scholar should work just fine.If you get a scribe, I'd like him to getI kind of requested this a while ago...dorfedhumaned (?) as Saren Settren, a devoted archivist with too many ideas and not enough common sense - and occasionally, far too much extra time on his hands.

It's still in progress, we'll need both doctors and scholars. Don't worry about that :D
We're still dealing with the basics of everyday life tho ; crafts and building mostly. But every dorfing request has been registered. I can...dorf you right now and give you the noble title later ? For now I do need all hands on the bridge.
I haven't ignored you, it's just you asked for a dorfing if I got a scribe...and for now what we do is mostly trying to wall up
What to do with Stran and Valken ? Both of them are locked up and present no danger, but isolation is taking a toll on their sanity. Besides we cannot use any of them as it stands.Note that I am completely new to both DF and the forums, and I've never seen a nightcreature myself so this is pure speculation.
I know right ? Most of the carpentry has been made by Valken. Masterwork, pretty much all of it. His curse not only forced us to emprison him, but also deprived us of a very very very talented carpenter...Alright, so the way we are going to keep him carpenting?
Oh, while I'm at it, Imic, you acquired the title of swordmaster lately
I can do that, safe for the statue method, as werebeast topple statues. I have another method however. We'll have to wait until summer so we can trade in more metal and stone, but I can make it work, that's for sure.Artifact statue?
Have you ever read Doomforests?Ah, old Doomforests. I loved that place, even when it became an esoteric clusterfuck of warring cults and overseers sabotaging eachother.
If not, there was a massive werebeast infestation in a nearby human town, so bad that all human caravans generally tore themselves apart before they left.
They, of course, had to deal with a lot of the, getting infected.
One, however, survived a battle in the dining room between all of the werebeasts.
Ast.
Ast, from then on, was locked away underground once a month, and even formed her own v sattelite village called Astville, which was happier than the actual fort.
What they did was they tracked the days pf the months, and locked her away whenever there was a full moon.
For roleplaying reasons, I don't think we can simply leave them to die, since this town is a very tight knigh community, so you could try the Doomforest approach?
I'm sorry I blabbered, I do that a lot

Especially then, actually.
Alright, update for Spring is done ! I'll wait until tomorrow if Megaman wants to post a medical story, then I'll post the update.A poor man depressed because he settled down and got a decent job. Midlife Crisis 101. I love it, thanks!
Lemonpie, you've been dorfed in !Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Three important notes about your characters tho :
• You're the uncle of Uquur, which is sort of the local celebrity
• Altho you haven't fought for a very long time, you're a war veteran having killed one jaguar and eight elves during a battle I was unaware of
• We'll have to wait for a bit for the picture ; I'll use the summer trade as an occasion to draw your character
>he is dejected after a lack of decent mealsWho wouldn't :P
Are you criticizing my cooking skills, old man? :P
So cool ! Thanks a lot !
I'll draw a bit about that maybe in the summer update. The good new is, Mim completely recovered and has gone back to training, thanks to our doctor.
Also when/if I do a pdf with this AAR, maybe in a while, would you mind if I put your writing in it? You'll be mentionned by name and all
Lord_Lemonpie : But of course! So basically that's what happened.Shoot, I'll take nest on the high ground, set me up for a bowman!
The War of Sieging is a short war that happened between the Nation of Pearls and the Tusk of Churches, elves mostly set in the south western coast of the Land of Oak, in 116 (we're in 133). Lemann family seems to have been mobilized against the southern elvish menace and moved to defend settlements on the west coast, under the leadership of the axeman Lubbe Finbrushes.
They first met the army of Imere Silkentrammel in the Pink Dunes, were they knew their first defeat against vastly numerically superior forces. One thousand versus three hundred. They put up a good fight, but ended up having to retreat. 76 members of the Tusks died, 140 Pearlite met their fate. Lemann was wounded in the battle and was sent back to the backline to mend his wounds
The army of Finbrushes then retreated to Steppedress, a seashore settlement and was attacked again shortly after. Unable to rally their forces they were totally crushed and lost the totality of their remaining forces. Lubbe Finbrushes was slain by an unnammed elf during the fight.
Here's the family members he lost that day :
His sister Escu , Lasher, slain by a grizzly bear
His brother Mori, Crossbowman, slain by a grizzly bear
His brother Kajeth, Bowman, slain by a jaguar
His sister Erdap, Axeman, slain by an elf
His sister Stropsi, Crossbowman, slain by a grizzly bear
His mother, Zicab, Crossbowman, slain by a leopard
The elves he killed however are nameless (non HF)
Zepher : Of course ; we have one regiment of axes, one regiment of swords and we're building up a regiment of bows. Take your pick !
Imic : No rush ; altho you're ready to be promoted. Do you want to be promoted as a hearthcaptain or army captain? Not much differences between them, aside the hearthcaptain is basically the chief of the guard for humans. If you chose to be an army captain, I'll ask you for a squad name too
Unfortunately no - but I am positive people will start making families when they have free time. I see them taking turn in being idle and socializing. There's not too much to say about Mate, except that he's chaining up masterwork. But I believe to suspect people want lavish meals instead of just easy ones, be them masterwork. So we'll get that rolling for this Autumn and make people joyful ! (9 masterwork meals made so far, and the frequency increases a lot, now he's making one per day)Have you found a perfect candidate for my wording yet? I really want to participate in making the story of this civilization more in depth.
Any idea on when I might finally get to be dorfed? :/
You've been dorfed page 4 but if you need something else feel free to ask...I had completely forgotten about that. Sorry. :(
Well, I have one archer that would fit - if you don't mind to be very young. All the other have permanent wounds. Else, I can give you a swordmaster and place you under Imic. It's up to youThat works. What's he all about?
Lord Lemonpie? High priest of Omer?Praise rainbows if that's the case!
Is there an xml or legends file that you can put for us to look at?+1 for this!
Seems like we'll soon fight the elves with our personal army of werebeasts. If they don't kill us all.
Wow, what dicks. Are there any skilled marksmen?I've started in marksmanship
While I work on my third and last update on this battle, I'm wondering about some things :
• Should we set a time limit for this fort? When I started, I thought five years would be a good limit, but we're already three years in, and depending on the activity of the fort, it can go by really fast... The world will continue anyways, but maybe the fort is slowly reaching its end? Two more years and it will be able to feed and defend itself without my supervision, that is extra sure
• When we finally decide to close the chapter on this part of the history of the kingdom (be it temporarily, we can always go back to it), would you be interested in either another fort or in an adventurer story? Maybe we can do a chose-your-own-adventure kind of thing with a hero from Mong Kima ? Just some thoughts
• What should be exactly the status of Imic's men at arm? They are technically a police force, unlike other captains, Imic is not part of the military per say- but human have no justice system. Should they be the personal men of the Lord? Or something else?
• Also, for now I registered two requests for job change: Zotho wants to be trained, and his wife needs to become a nurse to avoid untimely end. If anyone want a job reasignment, please let me know
Also ; we have a Queen ! Queen Uzu Rakedowl to be exact, daughter of King Peklod Balancedbitten and third leader of Mong Kima. She rules from Hazelslide's caste.

Hum...The archer squad might not be the most straightforward way to acquire glory, young Zepher. Tho if you so wish, I can ask Ser Imic to take you on the lord's men. You already have some basics in fencing, you'd do a fine recruit. Plus there's already some young men in that squad, you won't feel aloneI'm just trying to find ways to keep myself and the other archers alive if the ammo problem can't be fixed with in the allotted time for us to get our duties done.
Sure thing ! Here we go !Spoiler (click to show/hide)
In 130, she spent a year in the company of Luki Hollowfancies, another pearlite hero, and fought by her side during one full year.
I'm so glad people seem to like Luki. She's like my baby at this point, and that's thanks to her I could really get into the history of the world and get Watershield on its feet. Im so very sad she will not marry nor have kids tho :cDFHack IS amazing! While I can't quite point out the mystery of marrying adventures, I was able to make people consider themselves married in previous versions (don't know about kids, though) and there are several tales spinning around about adventures spawning progeny. Hm... I might try to find the way, but don't have much time now, sadly.
Apparently the dislike of the dwarves comes from very high, and possibly from a place I don't like very much.

Also Mate doesnt share room with a married woman :D
OOC : Before I go further, I shall do a bit of absolutely necessary spoilers:shit is going to hit the fan very, very, very hard. But in a reasonably long yet undetermined time. In the meantime, construction will take place, people will make babies, harvest will be plentiful, etc., but not anything that is truely worth mentionning.Well it'd be interesting to see what do the doctors do in those rare times when nobody is dying horribly.
So long story short, we have a handful of peaceful months in front of us, and I'd like to use them to go and draw and tell everydays stories. Bit like slice of life, as we hadn't much of them in this fort. So if you have any suggestion of a character we should focus on, stories you want to hear about and so on, by all means be my guest. I already have some ideas, but more ideas is always good o/
Just to note, tho, Mate is not a run off the mill average cook at this point. He's a legendary cook, high master grower, adequate persuader and negociator, competent liar and judge of intent, also dabbling in music (secen drums to be precise). He is waaaaays above the average cook of the kingdom at this point. How come his soup still tastes like rotten mest and cat piss then?
I'm terribly sorry for that cliffhanger, and for letting you guys down for a prolonged period of time. Work is eating my time, had some more projects to work on, and that battle is quite long to draw. But this is going to continue, like quite soon. I have already stuff to show, like 50% of the battle, and I'll be uploading everything this week end. Again, very sorry. It's okay, I know the feeling.
Also yes, Ryukan is wearing a monkey on his shirt. Don't ask... that's what our artisans decided to sew ! For the bloodline, I also wish to give him a legacy, and I tried to make him hangout with single ladies, but... He's not really flirtitious enough. I might need to help him a bit.
Mate's cooking has evolved from slime of unknown and questionable origins to the Ambrosia of the Gods
QuoteMate's cooking has evolved from slime of unknown and questionable origins to the Ambrosia of the GodsIt's still mostly made out of stuff of questionable origins but don't tell the customers.
Not yet, as she was sort of unimportant up to this point, but she goes along Ryukan very well. Along Xetan, she's his only unmarried female friend

I assume Mate was just cowering in the fort with the rest of the civilians.
How old is he, btw?
...a castle of glass? Sure, why not.
Just remember: throw no stones.
Alternatively, we can go for a glass interior and copper walls. Walls are not that expensive in terms of materials. We'll find a way for sure.I like the glass Idea. unless you want the copper walls.

Ah, child murder. We never lack that over here at Watershield. Some of my friends who are following my work outside this forum are starting to ask me questions.

Lol I'm far, far, far to be the best player around. I can't even pierce an aquifer. I'm just your run-off the mill starving artist with a liking for DF.
Well I guess I'll keep them inside the keep then. Maybe I can have a room with a stockpile of toys.
Seriously tho, if you're looking for displays of technical game skills there are a lot of far better players in this very forum. I don't have the skills and this is not my focus anyway
Besides I only can imagine the looks on the face of the town council if that idea was proposed.
"Alright gentlemen. What about we tie our prisonners into the very heart of our village, so they can traumatise children we'd lock with them ?
-Excuse me what ?
-The only problem is how we can keep the place flooded

-Yes so we can force the kids to swim in stagnant water from three to twelve years old"

It's the one I use. Some events happened in Autumn, and warrent a specific update which is underway o/ It'll be available during the week.
Also, some of the prisonners are willing to talk and I'd need someone to..ehm... perform an """interrogation""". If no one volonteers I'll ask Uquur, as she's the dedicated executionner. If someone volonteer, you have free range on the method used. We have everything needed to make them talk ! And we kinda need to know why we're fighting. And who we're fighting for that matter.

Alright, Haspen will take care of that then ! He hasn't received enough attention lately anyway. I'll need a bit of time to set up the interrogation, and we'll get to it !
As for Donu, don't worry, I may need soldiers, but it's not like I want to force conscript everyone. Actually I...may have a job for her. First I'll drill her into the reserve squad, because she's taken a bit of weight, and as soon as she's fit, she'll work at the temple. If that's okay?
I have a small arc in mind with him, but if you want him to do anything specific, all suggestions are welcome o/The only plans I have for Lemann is continuing the retelling of his own story through his nightmares, so feel free to include him in any arc you see fit.
Daaaw, Onget Cattenatag looks adorable. Y U so good drawing! I wish I had like 1/10th the artistic talent.
I'd have a lot to say about asking for free art...but let's keep to the story shall we? :D
Winter 139 update is underway. Basically two major events, including one involving Haspen and a rodent (yes).
Now I realize everything is a bit complex, so if you people want information/clarification about anything, I don't mind digging at all. Actually digging is almost 80% of my gametime
As for participation, really dorfing doesn't require any intelligent participation...nor any participation actually. It just helps me to focus on characters better and giving them some "soul" ; it's also a way for me to draw stupid jokes and to feel more involved in their daily life. It's also a way to directly influence the world by making the sort of decisions your character would make ; joining/leaving the army, requesting supplies or housing, getting married, this kind of things.
Edit : Or yes, glassmaker, if you don't mind working with Ari-Taskmo - the old dude who rescued Duslud last year. The poor man is pretty much alone doing his job, and also has to spend half his working days scavenging the battlefield to find workable goblinite
Perfect, just give me a name, and you're in as soon as the next boy reaches adulthood (it should be very soon, in the year 139) ! Ari-Taskmo will definitely teach the young boy or girl if you so chose) the ins and outs of the smelter-scavenger trade.
Kingcat or Leadercat?I will be sorely disappointed if this doesn't involve Starclan.
I like Dengusa a lot :D Also yes, that may look like a second name

“Well, I mean…..” Zothoabo paused, collected himself then replied, “Look, I never got to have fun as a kid. We have always been at war, and even though I have to work to keep our people alive, maybe she can live a carefree life, and feel truly happy.”
“I think we both know that’s not possible, not in this world.”

Aw, man, you didn't got any hate, we're fine, you're fine, everyone's fine ^^ Welcome aboard
We don't torture people for fun, it's prevented by our ethics anyway. I believe it's a crime for humans.
It's just...very hard to feel any kind of compassion for gobbos when they cut two legs and a hand of your favourite kid half a year ago :(
Altho, it is true that we sometimes execute prisonners, that's a tradition - when we feel someone died a hero, we sometimes sacrifice some prisonners to his memory. Some kind of a blöt let's say.
As for good gobbos, they do exist, hell we have one in our fort. Far up the north, there's a whole population of them, integrated in a dwarven community.
Now the thing is, we have no idea what to do with our prisonners. For now we're just stockpiling them.Spoiler: I've been playing with exported maps (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: I've been playing with exported maps (click to show/hide)
The globe was fine. That was awesome to look at.
When I was learning to mod humans to be playable, I learned that the SITE nobles are the ones who keep Demons from taking things over so often. The Goblins don't have any nobles in their raws at all, they honestly seem built to be conquered by demons, who probably have the nobility hard coded into them instead. Hell, without modding humans with site nobles, even they are often overrun and taken over by demons.
I've been meaning to make a full blown rebalance mod, I just got caught up in the fact that a new release is on the horizon. I was working on humans at the time I last did anything. Wanted to add wizards to them to make things more fair against the goblins I was going to upgrade with various castes that made fighting them more nightmarish. Part of those goblin upgrades was going to be site nobles to give them a fighting chance to be exactly that. Of Goblins, For Goblins, By Goblins.
That's perfect :D A friend told me Ases and Zefer are main character material. I just can't wait to see them grow up, get married and have a lot of killer babies of their ownAre you telling me that I can suplex giant monsters, get smashed through Windows, etc etc because I never skipped out on muscle milk?
Also, a look into Dwarf Therapist told me Zefer is the most physically strong person of the whole fort. Almost 4K strengh (!) while the normal human is 1K. Looks like he hasnt skipped legday
Hum... I think we'll keep some for possible sacrifices to the gods. But yeah... The idea to release at least some of them naked and let their commanders deal with them, I do prefer. Maybe we can actually judge them individually, and see what to do with them case by case.
What page was Idems in-game description posted? I like comparing your art to their in-game descriptions for funsies.
The Gluttonous Nun is a legendary capybara-leather bound book. The written portion consists of an 18 page autobiography entitled The Gluttonous Nun, authored by Donu Radiushus. It concerns the human Priestess Donu Radiushus. The writing is overly excited, but otherwise quite bad. On the item is an image of a flower in wood.
Donu’s Diary,
23rd Opal 138,
Dear Diary,
War is BOOOOOORRRRRRIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGGG
Captain Thrathnu (Inferno) or as I like to call him, Captain Thratpin (Juggler) ::) made us stay on “alert”. I’m only here because I got caught stealing food in the kitchen once, and now they think I need to lose weight. I was only taste testing Mate’s new recipe…. He just didn’t notice.
Zefer is really strong, so he should take my place in the squad. He probably likes it when he is given double duty. Speaking of, I need to be more careful. A few months ago Captain Thratpin said I have a “bad attitude” and doubled my “training” (more like torture). He even had my Dad over to talk about “respecting the temple of Ino” UUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH :'( :'( :'(
I JUST WANT DELICOUS FOOD AND DRINKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! :P
Sorry about that, I got distracted by my belly. I have to tell you about my first battle, it was really fun. It started when I was standing around with Zefer and Captain Thratpin. We didn’t even get to watch the battle, we just stood around in the barracks. EVENTUALLY we got word that a troll made its way into the barracks, and we had to deal with it. This is where things got really interesting. Zefer and the Captain went to deal with the troll, and left me alone. So I snuck into the tavern, and got to eat my first real lunch in FOREVER!!!! <3 <3 <3
They ration our food in the squad and it’s the WORST. :'( We usually get the worst food in the fort, and when we do get good food, they give us the smallest portions. Needless to say, I took advantage of my time in the Tavern and enjoyed many of the spoils of war.
P.S. I snuck away to write this while everyone is busy hauling all the loot inside the fort. Instead of spending so much time working to make more armor, they should be working to throw me a party. I’m almost Twelve and a Half, and I think there should be a half-birthday party in my honor.
Hopefully I will get more snack time, and less drill time in the spring. ;)
See you next time <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

Donu is now my favourite character :D
But I WILL make her lose weight. It's now a personal challenge. She has been oscillating between fat and very fat since half a year, but I swear I'll make her fit and pretty before she's 18.
Talking about that, the update is almost ready. Tonight or tomorrow at worst !
Spring 139 was the occasion of two important events. The first, which I'll focus on here, was our first official contact with the elves of Wulemaapasi.
So our family knowledge grows, Zefer. Dad's the miner.Gods bless our dear old miner dad, don't let the aquifer destroy him.
Also, the Elves are friends of nature. It doesn't really count as nature once you tame it like we've been doing with our capybaras.
Luckily then, there is the Imperial Pony faction, they sound like a perfect fit for you ! Dwarf Fortress is the ultimate corruption it seems. No duh, It would not be dwarf fortress if it did not corrupt everything it touched.
So our family knowledge grows, Zefer. Dad's the miner.Gods bless our dear old miner dad, don't let the aquifer destroy him.
There might be "Donu" in "Donuts", but I'll make extra sure the other way around remains false
Alright, Puja it is. I'll just need a name, since neither "Wolf" nor "Hunter" can be directly translated, and you're in.Also update on the way. Probably up tomorrow !Spoiler (click to show/hide)
“donu…….. DONU!”Why is my student/sister like this?
“Yes master Jalew?”
Jalew made some small splashes in the knee deep water, “Do you notice anything different down here?”
“Oh… cooooool, you broke through the aquifer already, great job….”
Jalew made more splashing noises, even spraying some water towards Donu.
“Dear….. Diary….. Today….. I –“ Donu was cut short as water splashed onto her notebook, “Stop it old man, I’m trying to write!”
“Stop writing and START PUMPING!!!!”
Donu fumbled around with her quill and journal, hastily stuffing them into one of her pockets. *pump* *pump* *pump* *pump*
“Keep it up, or we’ll never clear the aquifer!”
After a few more minutes of mining, Jalew was again knee deep in water.
“I…. finally…. got……out….of –“
“Donu, the pump!”
“Ok, ok, the pump, I got it…….. the….. pump…..wait a second, that’s not the right word-“
“DONU, BY INO START PUMPING!!!”
“Gah!” *pump* *pump* *pump* *pump* *pump* *pump**pump* *pump*

An exhausted Jalew climbed out of the mine, “Ok Donu, we’re done for the day. I’m tired, soaking wet, and hungry.” Jalew looked down to see Donu sleeping on the ground near the pump. He thought about walking away, leaving her to sleep in the mine, but then he thought of his own kids, and decided it would be better to wake her.
“huh, what time is it?”
“We’re done, let’s head to the tavern and get some food, I can’t believe no one delivered our lunches today.”
“Tavern sounds like a great idea. I already ate, but I just can’t resist Mate’s cooking.”
“You already ate?”
“Yeah, Zefer came by at lunch time and gave me 2 meals, I guess he feels bad about beating me up during training.”
“That’s because one of those meals WAS MINE!!!!” Jalew reached forward and grabbed Donu by the scruff of her neck. “You’re not going to the Tavern, I’m taking you back to the barracks and Thrathnu is going to whip you into shape!”
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”
Donu’s Diary,
7th Felsite 139
Dear Diary,
Today I finally got out ofthe pumpmilitary training. ;D I’ve been complaining to Zefer about how much I hate training and he finally agreed to ask his dad if I could work with him in the new mine. He’s pretty annoying, but not nearly as bad as >:( Captain Thratpin >:(.
The mine is kind of dark and boring. Maybe next time, I’ll try to get a job with Mom out in the forest. It’ll be more dangerous, but I have military training, so I can probably handle myself if an elf or goblin shows up. 8)
Speaking of elves. I finally got to see one. Dad and mom went on and on about how the elves are the worst and that’s the reason they moved to Watershields. But since we’ve been here, all we’ve seen is Goblins, and the occasional Dwarf.
Sorry if that was boring Diary, it’s hard to think of interesting things when I’m stuck underground with a grouchy old man. I guess I’ll try to take a nap, and give you another entry when I get some more gossip. ;)
Bye for now, <3 <3 <3 <3
:-*
He eats spinach flavored Wheaties. 'Nuff said.Yo, only the best of breakfasts
I do like that the families in the fort are getting fleshed out. Zotho's family is growing up, and the various children are beginning to play a part in fortress life, and now we find out Zefer and Ases are also part of a large/important family.... what other family/mafia shenanigans have been going on under our noses?
Does Prince Ryukan have family in the fort?
As for Zefer family tree, here's what I have :
The !!FUN!! ? You mean when we all die because a FB with death gas comes along and roll over us? I...really don't know when it comes. If it comes, and I somewhat hope it doesn't.
The goal of Watershield is not especially to create improbable situations or to torture its little people - it's to secure the borders of a kingdom I want to build in the very, very, very long timescale. I'm more interested in discovering the lore of Minbazkar than to show off technical game skills I don't have.
Huh, those portrait borders have little holes in them just begging for little icons. If you keep doing this sort of thing, might you consider drawing a profession icon in the top left corners?
Anyway, why don't we build a big moat around this place or something?
If the daughter is an incompetent weasel who is stuck far enough up her own ass that her face is inside her stomach, she needs taught why others are important. Especially if she's being given important tasks that could potentially injure or kill others if she doesn't do them right. It's not like Ases bullied her. :P She just gave her a warning that if she caused harm to Ases's father, she is getting pulped like that apple.
Well said Cathar. The number of community forts that everyone wants to become the next boatmurdered, but fail because someone along the way thinks that the only way to do that is to unleash the !!FUN!! or generally do something "wacky" is staggering. When the narrative is consistent and allowed to develop 'naturally' is when the stories can be at their absolute best. Of course, holding Boatmurdered up is a bit unfair these days, as it was done in a much earlier edition where there was an inherent narrative built into the structure of the game design in a manner that is far more prominent than in the current 3d versions. All the more reason for the player to drive that narrative instead. So again - keep up the great work.
Dengusa also came to age, and alongside other kids, joined the boot camp. Now we have a proper military school in our fort. This might not be the childhood all those kids deserve, but we have to make sure the next generation can keep Watershield standing after the day we're gone.
Awesome update!
It is kind of disappointing when the random werecreature you killed turns out to be a really interesting character in the Legends. Love the story tho.
I'm thinking the next story for Donu will be a mother-daughter talk, so can I get a mood update for Hustra?
Probably won't work on it till next week, but we'll see. Keep up the good work, I much prefer the RP style of play than any type of optimized !FUN!.
Yay! Any idea what Dengusa's first adult beverage was? Or does a human fort mean no alcohol dependency? For alcohol dependancy...yes and no. Human don't need alcohol like dwarves do and are content with water, but alcohol gives them good thoughts. They however acquire dependancy after being confronted with death, and since we're living at the border of the known world...let's say alcohol is a product in high demand.
(Oh, wait, I'm being forgetful. Children drink booze too, don't they? It's only babies who dehydrate.)
Speaking of it being humans and not dwarves, what's the age for adulthood again?
No problem at all ! As I say pretty much all over the thread, nobody has any duty toward the story. Join in if you want, participate when you want, no obligation at all. Luckily, Puja is still alive, so you're in and will join next update (probably tomorrow).
She just lost her brother Enasm last attack tho, on the fight on the bridge.
Emotional character story fodder right there. You can show how she reacts to the loss, assuming you're one of us writers.
She is married to `Zothoabo' Guardedswamps and has 7 children: Donu Kindledtrammel, Duslud Hugshound, Thur Socketlove, `Kiseabo' Shinglevision, Hob Webbedcombined, Ithev Yorefaint and Imo Knitplunge. She is the daughter of Loge Lulledmeal and Sesta Calmstraws.
So whatever happened to that were person we had locked up before, I seem to have forgotten and fear to search through 35 pages of material.Valken is still locked up. Still inside this building we fear to open. He's wearing rags and have not ate nor drank for...7 years I believe. I know I should kill him, but I don't have the heart to do that, he's one of the funders of Watershield. Same goes for the vampire Stran. Still locked up awaiting judgement.
Wow, 7 children!!! At first, I thought the youngest child's name was Ino. Would it be blasphamy to rename the child Ino after Zotho's god?
I know you said there is stuff planned for the next update, is that the reason you didn't include her cultural values? I usually use that more than mood to try to build a personality. It's fine if you don't want to include it, just curious.
P.S. It's good to see more people getting into their characters and asking for descriptions, histories, and info.... of course, I'm not the one who has to sift through legends to find that stuff. :)
Can I gets a pic of my eldest child? If you have time that is, and yes, the names are good as they come
Good to know. Do you mind giving me the detailed character pages for Sas and their father? I'd ask for Enasam's, too, but I don't remember if you can get those for someone who's dead. Also, did you ever actually elaborate on what the function of the knight squad RPwise beyond being the human version of the Fortress Guard?
Like others in her culture, she is offended by leisure time and leisurely living,
“Good, finish up what you are doing here, and then come to the tavern, that’s how adults handle their issues.”
Oh Donu, I almost hope you succeed you little rascal you, I mean your father is a little unreasonable with insisting you get married but otherwise everyone is being fairly...fair. But uh yeah, uh...stick it to The Man!
Muahahahaha! I get a mention in the diary. Crushed a perfectly good apple. I'll crush more than apples next time you fuck up around my dad, twerp. I'll bake you a cake, stick it in front of you, and when you think you're going to get your face pushed in it, I'm just going to pick it up and drop it upside down on the floor.

For Donu, do you wish to change her career? She still have some training to go through, but once she's done, the world is her oister. She doesn't have to be a priestess, she can be pretty much anything. Same goes for Dengusa, as we might need a dedicated weaponsmith and I'm not adverse to train him specifically for this task
Well, Zefer continues his service in the knight squad, alongside his little sister. He's now 19 years old. He participated in the last battle you can see him among the crowd, in the screenshots) and so far, has slain eleven goblins, four trolls and one beakdog. He's also Legendary in most of the combat skills. All in all, he's doing fine.Depends on if you want something....light hearted or what?
But if you have an idea about a mini arc about him, I'm very open to suggestion, so I'd draw something else than battles :)

Alright so a few questions before I get to writing, first off who was the "Brother" being mentioned between the three ladies (is like their names as well)? And two, has Zefer the legendary goblin tosser had any of the ladies offering lunch to him? With those out of the way onto writing.
I thought marriage was a lot more autonomous in this series, Ya know the game would do the marriage itself. And two, has Zefer the legendary goblin tosser had any of the ladies offering lunch to him? With those out of the way onto writing.
So from left to right in the first pannel, their names would be : Sirris, Donu and Ebkusa. The brother in question would be Sas, who's one of Zefer fellow knights. Also while I don't think Zefer had any luck with the ladies so far, he's in age of being married, and in medieval times, that's what the parents are for. If you wish to propose to a lady, just mention it. Some common sense rules - she must be over eighteen, not blood related (so basically no one from the Jalew or Asin clans) and if the girl in question is either a dorf or the daughter of a dorf, I'll need the consent of its player
Also nice ! Thanks a lot for the writing ! I'll focus a bit more on Zefer
Well, IndigoFenix, the choice is yours o/ Digo is fine tho, but if you want to change you still canDesign for Satheth is looking real awesome! Can't wait to see it completed
On a minor note, I've been working on your dorfin' designs

I thought marriage was a lot more autonomous in this series, Ya know the game would do the marriage itself. Who are all of our dorfed/hooman'd females?
She shrugged and wiped it clean before sheathing it. She knew swords couldn't talk, and so hadn't expected an answer. She did feel she was getting closer to naming it.
Is it possible to learn some more about him? Maybe slight bits about family?
Who was dorfed as Sirris? I'll reread things, but I did not see any hint on this
Well, to be fair to him, most of it is his personal values conflicting with what he's been culturally told. So you like art and drinking with friends? We have ways to make you walk straight >:CHeh, yeah, seems likely. And I'm all for him continuing the service. Both his dream and disposition hints that he wants to fight for the better future of himself and everyone else. No merrymaking, tho! It would be totally professional :P
Currently, he's training with the rest of the rookies in bootcamp, so he'll still be away from battle for a time. But like Donu, he's quite close to finish his training and chose his career. And since we're thinking about creating a second sword squad, he'll definitely have a place ready for him in the army.
??? From an RP perspective in this game, what Ases did was RIGHT.
ZEFER ...ATTEMPT TO SEDUCE THE CHEIF DOCTOR'S DAUGHTER
(If that's okay with the person that plays as donu)
Also I like how the next generation in Jalew's family could possibly bring an army down.
2. I don't think Zothoabo has an issue with Ases "bullying" Donu. The girl was a lazy shirker and the bullying was in response to that threatening a miner who happened to be our dad. Totally understandable. Now that Donu's actually working the bullying will stay at bay unless she totally fucks up and endangers another person's life.
At that point, it won't be cake hitting the floor.
Alright, it's official. Ases must have overreacted. I THOUGHT it was the right thing to do considering the girl was given a dangerous job and was risking a flood by not doing it properly. If it was really as big an issue as I thought it was, a responsible father probably would have told her outright, "if somebody gets hurt because of you, I'm throwing you to their kids and patching up what they leave behind." Fuck, it's what my own dad would probably have done.
Also I like how the chief doctor is actually following "Do no harm"

Is it possible to get overview of Mong Kima pantheon? We currently know more about self-named "gods" than about "real" ones.
I've started writing Satheth journal and stumbled on a few questions:
-) Does he have any good friends/annoying grudges?
-) Does he have any writing skills (not likely, but still - polishing them could become an interesting sub-quest)
-) Does he have time window to pray? (his thoughts state he is distracted by it; being too busy training is fine - I'm interested if regular praying is still possible for actively training fort members)
Wow, I really want to contribute, but I feel very much out of my element. I just can't keep enough characters straight.

No problem ! If you wish, I can focus a short update on your character and who he knows. Dengusa himself don't know a lot of people, he doesn't have a lot of faces to remember, and since already two of them (Donu and Satheth) are dorfed and training with him, that should be enough. It's okay not to know litterally everyone.
Did we ever find out who one punch kid was? He needs to be put under rigorous exercises so he can tap into his abilities.Exactly because adults were unable to uncover his identity, they are now training all the kids in the art of war. "Surviving sudden ambush'? Bullshit! They want one punch kid to surface and lead humanity to victory against ancient megabeasts, hordes of demons and lesser enemies. Sadly, for him, it seems to be "just a hobby".
Adventure Log of Satheth
That said, on other stuff ; I'll wait for Zotho to give his formal response to Zefer (my suggestion is to speak of bethrowal rather than marriage, Donu is still very young), and I want to draw something about this before we move on. Feel free to ask any information you need !
I'm thinking it may be a 3 part arc for Donu and Zefer to potentially get together. So it may take a year in-game for Zothoabo to come to a decision.Sounds good, whenever you want to start I'll write "response" diary entry.
Is he far enough removed to not be in her clan, or should he be in there?
Also, if there's any unmarried women or widows of his age, Lemann would probably like to get married. As the main trader of the fortress, he should have at least some wealth. He won't be someone to work for the sake of making himself rich, no, he'd rather pass on whatever wealth he accumulates to a child he's fathered.
Even if we'd kept discussing it, I wouldn't have been immature about it. I'm not that kind of guy.
(What did I miss?)
dear father
today i aid the Riverguard with the war against the elves, i plan on using the gift i received form you and craft a fort to protect my new friends. Pathril is quite the man to look up to, i often find myself chatting with him about the land mostly of the lack of snow and the freshly scent of spring........
ooc: hello this is valken/sirris dorf i finally join the forum and all these dairy and journal writing really made me want to write something for valken even though he has a short history and boring life in the fort now. and donu is cutest in fort i want her to be best friends with sirris ◔ ᗜ ◔

So, I got Sirris and Valken mixed up, so when you said you wanted Donu to be friends with Sirris, I thought you were asking for Donu to be friends with Valken. By the time I realized my mistake, it was too late, and I already had the idea for a story. I'll try to include something about Sirris in Donu's next diary entry, in the meantime, here's a short side story about Donu and Valken.
For the first time in a while, Valken smiled in the darkness, “Ok Donu, I’ll do that.”

I really like this silly style of yours :oSpoiler (click to show/hide)
some silly moments after training with sirris, donu and Ebkusa they seem to be good pals to me -w-
I like how Cathar has put so much detail into the world and town, noticing every fine and tiny detail about the inhabitants that make it such a loveable universe. Straight down to those blue skinned goblins we all love-hate or the men that wrestle alligators straight up. I have to say it...This story should get nominated into the hall of fame.It was. Two or three times. But Cathar requested to be left out of HoL until he is gone/finishes the saga. Pity, but so much more reason for us to help him craft a true masterpiece!

Ah, bad empathy AND bad analytic abilities? That poor kid...
Interesting mix of traits... So he has bad empathy but a way with words and a good feel for social relationships. Sounds like a typical sociopath, but also views guile as worthless. Also he is argumentative and doesn't respect societies that have settled into peace, but also believes peace is preferable to war and dreams of bringing peace to the world.
I'm going to interpret this as meaning he is generally disrespectful and rude, and likes to bluntly tell people unpleasant things they don't want to hear. He doesn't really care about them per se, but his words usually get people to listen anyway...even though they generally hate him for it.
Also he seems to have an OCD-ADD blend from that description...he's not as clever as he'd like to think, but is generally able to succeed through pure pigheadedness and trial and error. Except when something doesn't interest him, in which case he just loses focus.
I was going to make hia rat his only "friend", but since he hates rats I'm going to make it that he likes to run them through horrific deathtraps instead.
He certainly has some issues, that much is clear.
Armok Vision is definitely fun, but it's getting an overhaul so it won't be available to the newest versions for quite some time. It's a pity. It looks so cool, too!
That moment when you prefer a game of Dwarf fortress to your own life.
At least leaving certificate exams aren't in Dwarf fortress.

It's dark times we live in.
it's a bit melodramatic, but we're in pretty dire straights here, so I hope it comes off as genuine.

Oh also ! Do you have any idea for Donu's career? Do you want her to become the next wood burner, or to work as a nurse maybe? Priests don't seem to do a lot, that may become boring for her.
This is indeed most sad, ideally we could at least feed them and treat them decently during daylight hours, no? why not at least have our infected housed together, it seems a bit cruel having them so thoroughly isolated... ;-;They would tear each other apart when the full moon came...Hustra includednwould be in danger because the Baby and all that...werebeasts have no need to be fed
This is indeed most sad, ideally we could at least feed them and treat them decently during daylight hours, no? why not at least have our infected housed together, it seems a bit cruel having them so thoroughly isolated... ;-;"a bit cruel"? Hah, that is very cruel, but needed. Werebeasts are FUN and while managing a fort of them can be interesting - as Cathar already pointed out, we are guardians of human civilization and all werebeasts and vampires that for now could be treated with a degree of mercy, need to be executed once we can guarantee their imprisonment no more (i.e. before the fort is retired).
OR we could just put them in an unclimable pit or something...*shrugs* surprised that weres kill each other btw."Unclimable" lasts until fortress layout gets lost in world memory (as soon as player attention leaves it). As for weres killing each other - different weres kill each other and weres of same genus not always transform at the same moment of time, so that one lunges for another right before it transforms. As science has shown, it is possible to have a population of weres that do not kill each other, but 50-70% of populace will be killed before that.
That's actually something I don't see discussed a lot on this forum. It its technically possible to make an entire immortal vampire fortress by shedding their blood in the drinking water. Vampires don't murder each other and live forever and have improved stats. Good deal if you manage to get everyone right? Well not especially. Because again, we need to think in the long run, after we leave.
Werebeasts will get out of prisons and spread everywhere, vampires will go and infiltrate villages, necromancer will move and rampage the countryside with undead armies. Sometimes, a single werebeast is all it takes to anihilate a village, so 120 of them rushing out of watershield at once... Maybe we can cage them ? If you know how the game reacts to worldgen caged beasts? If so, maybe we can save them.
Edit : Thanks for the log entry ! I'll have news for Satheth pretty soon too ! For most of the rookies actually, but especially for Satheth.
We don't have to kill them. Just send an adventurer after the fact to pick up all cursed citizens.
Or, even better, use DFHack to play as the werebeasts directly. Send them on a quest across the world, seeking to redeem themselves and use their curse for good.
Yes, you're totally right. We need to think in the long run. And for many players, unleashing a vast horde of vampires on the world IS thinking about the long run. I'm not telling you to do that. I'm just saying for a lot of people, unleashing a horde of undead upon the world is giving the Fun back to the game world. Especially if you've raised most or all of them into Legendary warriors before turning them . . .
Agreed, this story stands out because it's about the little stuff and people getting along in the world.>Ases hulks out and beats them with the pommel of thier blade
When you put them on the chopping block, I volunteer Ases for the job. It'd be interesting to see the combat log.

They do since they are werebeasts...and Donu's mother. XD I think they deserve the blade, don't you?
We'll probably do the job mechanically. I don't mean to complain but, can we pass on the edgy-torturing-people-is-fun ? That's putting me off for real. Human in DF find that appauling and so do I.
I wasn't actually going for the edgy torture is fun route. I honestly got into character and forgot that doing this mechanically was an option. From a human standpoint, wouldn't those characters want to see a human face one last time before lights out?
I mean, you realize Zefer and Ases are talking about the Prince's and the Commander's childhood frien and the mother of the girl he's courting not deserving a proper end ? Do I really need to explain why this is, somewhat, a tiny wincy bit inappropriate? We'll leave the job to someone who will do it properly and with decorum
You have to take into account that both Valken and Hustra are upstanding members of society. Valken is a childhood friend of the ruling class, Hustra was instrumental in setting our metal industry in place and is the doctor's wife. Both have far more clout than Ases does, adding to the fact they are victims, not criminals.
Hearing Ases volonteering to kill them, I mean why not. Someone has to dirty their hands. We have an executionner for that, but since it's discussed I see no malice in that. But hearing her joke about them not deserving a proper death is insanely inappropriate, especially since she's a knight and should know better.

I tried to look through the thread for confirmation, but did Sirris also lose his mother?yes her mother died in a battle seven years ago on page 11 her name Bengel.
if so, what happened?
Asking for research purposes. 8)
Is that someone trying to get with Donu??
ooc: as for the "flying sweets meeting ases face incident" it mostly a joke as you hear about it but never know how it happen
No dirtying of hands is needed. When the time comes, they'll realize that they'll never be accepted as human and commit suicide by jumping into a very deep hole.
I still feel that adventuring them out is the best idea.

Dafq kind of talk is that blue? they are acceptaed as human, just ones about as dangerous as lepers or carriers of the bubonic plauge, but kind of almost undead. The fact that we accept them as ''human"(such a word as a synonym for sapient worthy of respect in this case) is why we arent tossing them down a pit or something horribly painful.
But yes we should give them a choice on how to die, to preserve their dignity, these are not murderers or rapists they are not tyrants, they are essentially innocent people with a dangerous and incurable disease.

If you decide to do it mechanically, I volunteer Digo for designing the apparatus. It would help establish his character as "cold heartless bastard who is good at persuading others to see things his way and does what needs to be done without feeling bad about it, even though it gets him hated". The other characters can debate the ethics of such a decision after the fact.
She also sees that the fort is surrounded by enemies and isn't willing to put herself in a position to be compromised when danger comes calling. Which is why she's very cautious about getting together with anyone. Though if the in-game character does wind up getting close to someone, I'll totally write an in-universe story delving into it.Due to how relatioship-building was overworked in recent versions, Ases can live and die out of advanced age without making any significant contacts at all. She'll need to socialize with others - sparring and shouting discipline at recruits does not seem to raise friendship. Camaradie (fictional) - yes, but not friendship (thus also precluding any romance from happening).

It would help establish his character as "cold heartless bastard who is good at persuading others to see things his way and does what needs to be done without feeling bad about it, even though it gets him hated". The other characters can debate the ethics of such a decision after the fact.
What is it with the "emotionless killer" archetype ; we're normal human beings with emotions and normal social bonds. I mean, it's not like the characters grow in a vacuum. It's a thigh community, the child grow together.
There are independant spirits for sure, but I'd much, much, much prefer to see the character grow interracting with each other rather than taking steps not to. Drawing stories about character with no emotion/who find joy in the suffering of other is just not fun to me.
He's still young though, and hasn't quite realized that yet... and thanks to his poor analytical abilities, it might take him some time. He might need to get punched a bit more.
• Dengusa starts his apprenticeship in metalcrafting.
It is information exported in DF Legends Mode, viewed in Legends Viewer (absolutely GREAT side-tool for DF Legends digging). About reading it... Dark green forests, green plains and green-gray marshes (can't guarantee); special symbols mean civilization settlements. Lines are connections between them (routes, roads and such). -----> is an attack going from goblin civ dark pits onto our human neighboors.• Dengusa starts his apprenticeship in metalcrafting.
Yay!
A question: I'm still not completely sure where you're getting all the world information for your narrative. In particular, your map which I presume shows army movements. Is this information being summarized for you by a utility? How do I read the map?
Can we seriously try to avoid killing anyone off who is loyal to the fort? We need all the support we can get and I think that ought to include ases.
Almost ! Light green are light forest, dark green deep forests, gray is mountain. On the very small map, only the belligerents are shown - Watershield is a bit up to the north, to the west of the great lake you can see on the north eastern side. I'll provide a wider, better map soon, probably tomorow.
Also : Satheth was indeed Thrathnu's top student. Still a big notch under the level of the standing army, but among the trainees, he was the best, seconded by Donu. Erod, the dude with the axe, is just a soldier, from the Dotep clan - he's the big brother of Sirris and Turot, girls that Satheth met in the boot camp. As Malfinal (who is incidently the guy who designed him, thanks again) said, he's a nice chap that gets kicks from helping other, but talks with fists as soon as someone eats his french fries.
A quiproquo between him and Zefer about Donu would be absolutely epic.
I'm pretty sure Zefer would (physically speaki ng) snap the axe man in half over Donu. That being said, wasn't Zefer supposed to give Donu a flower? Haha.
^ Great story.
I think there is a bit of values dissonance between the forumites who mostly subscribe to western cultural standards, and the humans of Mong Kima who subscribe to DF proc-gen standards, such as disliking romance, and family. Even with these cultural values that don't fit out culture, they have a social almost isolated society where everyone knows everyone, so even if you don't like family, or value romance, you have to interact with and consider those people else you will be ostracized.
"Stupid, stupid, stupid."
I got busy and wasn't able to finish Donu's Spring Update before Summer 139, so here is the Spring Update. It's pretty long, so I'm keeping it in the spoiler.Spoiler: An Update From Donu (click to show/hide)

jk, it's not that bad.
He is the strongest person in the fort tho, and the idea of a professional soldier picking flowers is pretty funny for Donu who is still kind of oblivious.
Oh god I wish we could make short skirts made of copper. But I know full well most of our male population would adopt them as the latest fashion before we could equip anyone with them.
As for Ser I'll give you all relevant informations in a few ! Sorry, I'm taking a bit of time to finish my stuff.
Also for Zefer/Erod shodown that could be fun but that's typically the kind of stuff I won't be enforcing against the players will

Why do I imagine the male (dorfed male that is) characters wearing skirts now.
Dammit Cathar.

Whats wrong with males in skirts, robes, kilts, etc. Its better than being forced to wear those barbarous pant things, and that was the ROMAN perspective on things, and they were definitley patriarchal so I find this debate a little silly.
Intimidating but impractical and arrogant (I mean the goblins have armor and bows right? they wont hesitate to take advantage of such recklessness)now maybe if they dressed in the butchered remains of goblins....NOW THAT would be intimidating and still provide a modicum of protection. Sadly pearlite ethics will not let us, methinks. This is the sad truth, but we make it up in spades by having absolutely mudertastic soldiers...i mean who can say they are from Watershield unless they can cut down a werebeast with a single cleave?
Know what? The men just need to be brazen and go in just loincloths. Nothing is morestupidintimidating than a bunch of crimson haired badasses taking 500 goblins in nothing but underwear.

Autumn update is going to be weird, lol.
I'm not really done at all with summer update. I'm sorry, things will take time at this period of a year. For most people, Christmas is a wonderful moment full of magic and children laughters, to me it's a hell made of running between shelves while printing receits at four times the usual speed. I just wanted to respond to Digo real quick. For all intent and purpous we're still in summer.
Shit will hit the fan (again, yes) in autumn, and we'll get serious again, but for now I just want to chill a bit :D
Also I'm sorry, I don't take commissions :c I don't draw or ask for money in general, I feel like I'm robbing people every time. Tis a labor of love ! I'd draw more stupid shit for summer 140. Let's chill while we can :D
Summer 140.It's kind of a bad thing when your own father says "I have plenty of sons to marry around"
Summer came and went. It was very calm, as almost each year. It feels good to know that whatever monstruosities we are to face in pursuit of our mission, summer is usually a time when we can sit back and relax for a while. There is not much to talk about - we are set firmly on the tracks set by the last town council, and all we had to do was to go forward.
There are however a couple things I'd like to note, that may be of importance.
Firstly, we started to carry out the plan regarding our prisonners. Ollin Vaultaxe, commander of the siege strikeforce of Osme, three years ago, was slain. Sas, son of Bolli, carried out the execution. The two elves we caught were released soon after. The goblin officer Tode is still waiting for her fate as I write those lines, and the goblins grunt captured alongside her still have to be released, but this is not an urgent priority.
In other news, Onguet has been with us for two years, and her right to stay with us came to an end. However, she asked us to remain to Watershield as a permanent citizen, so as to start her own medecine school. Seing the value of training more doctors, we accepted heartfully.

Duslud is now her apprentice - some dwarven scholars also decided to follow the same path, forming what is pretty much the first non-military school of the village. We hope such endeavour will bring glory to us and to the kingdom as a whole.
We resumed our production of metal, we now split into two ; silver is made into training weapons and decorations, and serve the young Dengusa well to train his hand at metalcrafting. He learns quick - we hope to produce high quality weaponry soon.
Copper is kept on the side, ready to be used to reinforce our outer walls. Once the walls are finished, we'll consider our mission over... Give it a year or two.
War continues to rages on in the south between the empire of Osme and the kingdom of Egapesor. Our allies seem to have succeded in repelling them once again. We are glad to have such allies - their resistance allows us to reorganize ourselves, and knowing we're not alone in this war give te men hope.
We also decided to suspend, probably indefinitely, the piercing of the aquifer. Even with mechanized labour, this is becoing too hazardous, and we feel we won't get anywhere like that. We pierced the soil and secured some clay - enough to start a new industry. This is now what we hoped for, but it shall suffice - our primary mission remains to protect the kingdom, and we shall leave the exploration of the depths to others.
I believe this is all. Nothing to be noted, really, on the summers trade. We traded cloth to metal, and decided to add a large tribute to the kingdom, to add something material to the war effort. The traders seemed very pleased. Times like this help us a lot, and give us expectations for the future.

It's kind of a bad thing when your own father says "I have plenty of sons to marry around"Don't worry, Donu is not exactly a serial killer :D
So, both weapons and decorations? Fun!
I'm imagining a sidestory where Dengusa starts making toys out of silver, being fresh out of childhood anyway, and gets in trouble for wasting good metal. But hey; the other kids in the place will have shiny new toys!
(Perhaps musical instrument parts. Are you bothering to provide people with musical instruments? And are there any that require a metal component? If so, Dengusa might make one or two. . . . And get in trouble.)
But if you, Cathar, don't mind wasting a little silver on some toys, I'd be tickled if that happened at least.
Also glad you have plans for an official wrap-up to this story.
Do we have any other metals to make weapons out of? Or armour, I know wrestling really isn't a good thing but we could try to always train our warriors for on the spot combat incase we lose grip on our weaponsIt's kind of a bad thing when your own father says "I have plenty of sons to marry around"Don't worry, Donu is not exactly a serial killer :DSo, both weapons and decorations? We made some metal covers for our books as well. We do have some instruments, but we haven't produced any yet. Most of them were traded, and some of them picked from the corpses of enemy bards. But we can make more, that's for sure.
Also yes, I feel this peculiar chapter has gone for long enough, it starts to get a bit circular. But if people are still interested, we can make another one after that.
Oh yeah, don't worry about that, hand on hand combat is part of everyone's training. Most of our soldiers can kill a troll barehand. For other metal, yes, we have a lot of tin, so we can make bronze, and we have some reserve of iron. But I want to train Dengusa before I give him more serious workThen why don't we train a set of soldiers for flanking and stealth combats? If what you said about the 500 some odd goblins on the doorstep sounds like we need to introduce guerilla tactics within our arrangement, maybe have some back lines aim for important captain's and what not?
Sure thing, if you have an idea in mind and are proposing yourself for a promotion, please go on explaining your idea. I've been looking for promoting a new captain for quite a time now.
Works for me ! I'll soon be promoting Zefer to a ranger squad, using swords and bows. It will likely be a small squad at first, and Zefer will have to drill his own recruits, but that's definitely something we can do. I'll make sure to tell you when he receives his promotion.I'm game! I can get some fine rangers out there
While I am at it, I think it's more than time to get a color scheme for both the kingdom and the Riverguard. So why not decide that while I work on the next update? We'd need those for painting shields and for the flags aswell.Oh I can think of a few, these colors will intimidate even the dragons that hide in the caves!
If you want to pick two colors for the Nation of Pearls, and one color for the Riverguard, you'll make me a happy man.
Out of curiosity, what is the symbol of Mong Kima / Watershields (River Guard)?I was thinking of a more regal approach, a pearlish white circle surrounded by a border of purple and a gold trim on the edge of the shield, mostly because we are the last bastion of the queens seat of power not to mention that the white circle is in fact a pearl.
Also, colors that pop into my head are Red & Gold, and Black & Green. Maybe Blue and Black because river, idk, lol.
The symbol of Mong Kima is an image of crown. It's not really remarkable, aside from it's name, The Mechanism of Mortality. People love symbolism that's for sure.
The symbol of the Riverguard is a shield with five arrows shot at it.
(https://orig00.deviantart.net/de54/f/2017/116/2/1/mong_kima___cover_1_by_number_seventeen-db769bb.jpg)Throwing a blazon into drawshield (with appropriate coloring, though it's easily changeable) generates this
That's how I designed the Mong Kima's symbol. For the Riverguard and Watershield, I must admit I haven't gave it too much of a thought, because we haven't crafted a lot of those symbols, but surely we need a definite design. So I've been thinking about those :
I'm more leaning toward number 1, because it's more compact mostly. As for the colors... I really have no idea. Maybe something to evoke the copper and silver we're getting from the war, and the water we're sitting on ? Or some red/orange to remind of the unusual haircolors of the people who live here ? We need something to symbolize what we are. But I don't have a list of color schemes to chose from, but I'm open to any suggestions
I actually like this ! Are you guys okay with that? That seems pretty good to me !
Edit : Maybe we can keep my first design for the flag, with the arrows bent in a slight circle, and use Lemonpie's variation for shields ?
Sorry about the double post. I made some shitty photoshops with me and Zefer's color suggestions. Just to help the visual learners.Amazing designs, these will definitely strike fear into the hearts of many.Spoiler: red+gold (click to show/hide)Spoiler: green+black (click to show/hide)Spoiler: purple+gold (click to show/hide)
For the colors, I like the purple one. Maybe we can replace the yellow by orange, to avoid a too big "in your face" contrast, else this is my favourite so far

In heraldry, the point of contrast is so the banner is visible and recognizable in bad weather conditions 'v.
In heraldry, the point of contrast is so the banner is visible and recognizable in bad weather conditions 'v.
You're right but it kinda make my point :D
In low visibility conditions, human eyes lose its ability to see saturation before it loses its ability to see luminosity. In low light situation, the orange and the white would still be somewhat recognizable, but the purple would appear pitch black (it's a question of color luminosity, I can show you if you want). So in this situation it's necessary to distinguish the white from the secondary color, because you will only be able to distinguish the two.
Orange and white are more distinct than white and yellow (orange being a less luminous color), so in low light situation they would fare better imho.
But the real point is, they need to look cool. When the men are under the flag, they must think "fuck yeah, I'm under the flag"
There was a report from Watershield. It was in the hands of a tired, scarred, shell - shocked soldier, who could barely look anyone in the eye.I am prepared for an attack of titan-esque sequel where we murderfuck this collosus if he wins
The walls of watershield were made of wood. Sparks flew from the sky, and the monsters gears, like a massive striker, lit the forest aflame. Such heat spread through the bogs like a tide, through the earth, lighting the turf aflame.
The rooftops of watershield burned bright in the darkness. A host of humans, all clad in bronze slowly walked towards the great beast of metal, lights beaming down, blinding the combatants. The soldiers put their shields forward, forming a wall. None would pass.
None.
[HYYYYYYPE]
[I know this isn't what's happening, but I'm so hyped!]
Do I spy some steel on the armor of the leaders? If so, darn shame none of it got into the weapons.
If it must end this way, then so be it! Hey, if we're lucky, the dumb thing will camp out in the remains for a few seasons and then leave, so the fort can retire instead of fall . . .
Also if only I had the time to get the Ranger Squad up and active we would stand some semblance of a chance against this beast of olden times.
But for now all I have to do is pray that atleast some important characters make it.
Dig a pit, put the cage in, wall the pit, never open it again. Profit!
Trust teh Haspen's simple plan:We...we aren't dead!
Dig the pit to deepest cavern-
Oh wait, aquifer. Dammit :v
Trust teh Haspens's simple plan v.2:
Dig a pit, put the cage in, wall the pit, never open it again. Profit!
Dig a pit, put the cage in, wall the pit, never open it again. Profit!
That won't do...It will escape when the fort is retired (read : soon) and will probably not be happy. It needs to die !
Zefer was promoted to the rank of cadet captain, and his wedding with Donu was planned.
Oh, and I proposed to Donu...i think I did anyways, all that happened after the bronze demon fell was a blur...so I think I'll ask Donu what happened, our betrothement is soon though.

I thought we were waiting till they were old enough to get married. I was going to delay the courtship for at least 2 more seasons till Donu is 16, but I may have lost track of time. I know we could do a betrothal, have it last the rest of the year. The next story I had planned was Donu talking with her dad about Zefer, so I can tie a betrothal in with that.
edit: Awesome story tho. I like how more and more badass monsters/armies keep coming to watershield, only to get embarrassed by a few brave humans.

Wow. Um. Is a level-controlled cave-in trap an option?

Digo turned around and walked back to his room. Tomorrow, his new job would begin.
Hum...we're super low tech, we don't have the logistical means to do any of that. Odlug might survive after all.
It's fine, at least the capitale city is safe from its rampage.
Alright guys, from now on I'll only do one update per year and wrap this up before opening a new chapter. If you wish anything to be done, it's pretty much now or never !

Thanks a lot for the story :D I'll have something drawn for lil Digo soon !
I'd be all for it, but Watershield itself is the condition for the world to be somewhat secure. If we leave, the kingdom will be left defenseless. Unfortunately, we can't just abandon the fort ; we'll have to retire it and keep our fingers crossedWhy not bring an adventurer in to deal with the monstrosity that is this colossus? I know I'm asking a lot here but this is the shield of humanity we are talking about.
mini update.Zoth is best father-in-law.
Zothoabo was woken from his nap by a crashing sound coming from the hospital. He got out of bed cautiously and headed out. There wasn’t a real threat of thievery in Watershields, but he didn’t want anyone disrupting, or moving his supplies in case of emergency.
When he opened the door to the hospital he was greeted with the sight of Donu, trying to handle two brooms and a mop in one hand, while carrying some rags in the other. As he opened the door, she stepped in her mop bucket and slipped, crashing to the floor and spilling mop water on the ground.
“Donu, what are you doing here? You usually visit once per week.”
Donu scrambled to her feet and kicked the bucket in anger, spraying more mop water across the floor, “Hey dad, just helping out like the good daughter I am.”
“Are you alright? It’s not like you to show up out of nowhere just to,” he made air quotes with his fingers, “help.”
“I don’t have much to do, and with mom gone, I figured you could use an extra hand at the hospital.”
“So you don’t have any ulterior motives for coming here?” He gave Donu his best dad stare, “You know, I heard some rumors you and Zefer have become lovers.”
“DAD!”
“What?” He gave an exaggerated shrug, “It’s what I heard.”
Donu fidgeted a bit during the awkward silence that ensued. “Ok, so maybe me and Zefer are a little more than friends.”
“So you did have ulterior motives for coming here?”
“W-wel’,” she stammered, “I just want you to talk to Jalew and see if he approves of us.”
Zothoabo grabbed Donu and pulled her into a bear hug, “I’m so proud of you. I’ll talk to Jalew, but you have to tell your mother. I know you haven’t talked to her since her accident, but she needs to know her children are still able to feel joy.”
“I’ll talk to her,” Donu hugged her father back, “Thank you, you’ve been a great dad.”
As Donu left Zothoabo began cleaning up the mess she made, “A great dad, huh?” he said to himself, “Who would've thought?”
I hope not to become a third wheel on one of there dates again... Maybe i'll drag Duslud along. Duslud thinks I don't notice him staring at me but I do , I also didn't make a lot of male friends so i guess Duslud would be my first choice in a husband.
I also hung out with Duslud at the party his face was so red , we'll towards the end of the party I gave him a kiss on the cheek and now i'm writing in you journal.

New plan: Write enough stories that Cathar gets distracted drawing them, and never retires the fortress, lol
((I'm going to try and bring Imic's stuff somewhere, since I've made him out to be a but of a loner, but his friends list says otherwise, so I want to do a bit on that once I'm not in bed and my mind is working again. This was a bit rambly, but I wanted to do something.))
it so cute
“Sounds fun, I’d like to spend more time with my little shrimp.” She gave him another hug, and hurried away to her room.
Duslud stood there for a while to get the blush off his face. He could already imagine Onget giving him grief about it. After a while, he began limping back to the library. “What did I do to deserve her?” he thought to himself as he started down the path.
But what I have in mind for the very near future is to go and explore the world beyond the boundaries of the fort, questing, and have a more close up look at the state of the subcontinent. I kinda want to see how the kingdom goes more closely, and meet other allied rulers, and as I understood, people who follow the thread are more adventurer mode than fortress mode, so it would kill two birds with one stone.
Yes, I finally got myself to upgrade to the latest version. No issue so far, but since the world was generated in 43.03 (I think) we'll miss out on some features. That said, I want to keep the counter attack for a later stage. Maybe we can, later, build a fortress specifically made to stop and revert their progress.

If no one is interested, no biggie, Ill do it on my own, but I feel like it could be a fun experience to share more directly
There is a couple missions I have in my head.
• Explorator : Find out what the hell is happening in the Land of Confining and come back with an exploratory report. It's not normal every night creature find it's origin in that small place
• Vault raider : We need better metals than iron, and any hero willing to adventure in a vault and come back with magic materials shall be rewarded
• Preacher: Convince as many kingdom leader to value peace. Especially elves of Pinalene and Wulemaapasi.
• Anthropologue : Visit as many neighbouring nations as you can, come with a report on their customs. Any trivia would be valuable for establishing relations.
• Ruin roamer : Travel to the distant north and get your hand on Onget books. Do so while trying to avoid the forgotten beast that is confirmed in the area.
• Agent : Travel to the conquered dwarven holds in the south. Assess the situation, act appropriately. We need to free those holds at least, take it for ourselves at best
I suggest a quest to the Land of Confining. It sounds like a good opportunity for both heroics and plot development.
Could we ask for certain things the characters who live in the castle? As Ser would like more books to preserve for the future.
“I’m glad you’re happy. Your father and I are very proud of you.”

With the great number of people, both from Mong Kima and Osme Stobûb having drown in the swamp, it became a common belief that a part of them would remain trapped in the stagnant waters that surround the village. Valiant souls would grow into beautiful river flowers, while cowardly ones would become fishes and feed the livings. For that reason, when waterlily bloom in midspring, it is believed a gateway between the world of the living and the world of the dead is opened for a short time. Wearing waterlily flowers is a way pearlites have to carry on the souls of the departed with oneself, until the flower's fragrance vanishes and the dead returns to its sleep. Offering one is likewise seen as a heartfelt gift.
To the south of Watershield, a green bridge crosses the uneven river. The waters are dangerous and one can easily sink where they would believe to be able to walk.
This bridge is said to be haunted, as strange noises come from its fundations. Crossing it in silence is advised to the traveller, as so not to disturb the creatures that inhabit this strange place, for the bridge who links the two sides of the enchanted swamp might very well also be a link between worlds.
Often, Donu, now the town's shaman, would go to the river and talk to that bridge, apparently lost in conversation, then return to the village hours later, smiling. What is she discussing with the invisible creatures of the river, none dared to ask her so far.
I pity I was unable to follow last updates concluding current story. There also go several ideas I wanted to write or suggest but had (and still have) no time for. Welp, life happens :D
I hope Satheth would lead a satisfying life afterwards, still following his goal to protect the realm of men from the ever-encroaching threats.
Also, awesome Luki! Glad to see more of her in new style... Speaking of which - how about Onget in new style? I fancy our resident goblin (theoretical!) doctor quite a lot
I'll sign up for adventuring.
Is it supposed to be someone directly related to the fortress (can't be from the fort itself, of course, but from the same civ at least), or is it going to be a separate side-plot that may tie in with the fortress later?
Heck I might as well carry an adventure on myself!Aww yeah :D
That's excellent ! When you're completely done, I'll vectorize the symbols and use them as a ressource. Thanks so much !
Also when you're done, feel free to write me what you want to be drawn in exchange, either here or in message. Doesnt have to be related to anything.
Edit : Oh, and while I'm here, can people interested in the next chapter give me a rough idea of their adventurer to come? So I can gather some ressources and give you informations beforehand
...
That is awesome.
The final proof that this thread is, infact, a deep, daek, seemingly endless barrel of wine from which you drink every now and then, each time revelling in how much better it's gotten....
That is awesome.
^ Truth ^
This thread keeps getting better and better with time.
Pre-emptive inquiry of the next N+1 forum users:
"Sequel when?" :P
Excellent ending.
Well, perhaps for the randomly-generated statues to be less absurd. "Three goblins"? Oh, well . . . maybe it's symbolic . . .(https://orig00.deviantart.net/a38e/f/2018/036/a/7/eh_by_number_seventeen-dc2b1yx.jpg)
It might also be interesting to see if the computer-controlled version of the fort does anything good once players have run a few adventurers. Maybe a quick check-in comic. For that matter, what's the status on your older adventurer, again?
More goblin waifu! :PWell, perhaps for the randomly-generated statues to be less absurd. "Three goblins"? Oh, well . . . maybe it's symbolic . . .(https://orig00.deviantart.net/a38e/f/2018/036/a/7/eh_by_number_seventeen-dc2b1yx.jpg)
Ill redo another Onget later, this one was just to chill
I shall also note that Onget, the goblin from the nothern kingdom of Bomreklaltur, share the same mentality as the dwarves, without a lot of variance. She likes pretty much the same things as they do. However, she is far less resiliant to stress than they are, and is far, far more emotional. When the goblin prisonner escaped his jail and was slain in the city, pearlite scholars reported she cried in public, which annoyed a lot of people. She appears very weak to the townfolk, which is a bit strange to us, as we tend to consider goblins as emotionless killers in general.
Onget was very hard to deal with, not out of malice but out of emotional vulnerability, and required a lot of care... but in the end, the general consensus was understanding. She was given a small room in the temple and sheltered from the daily dirty business a border fort has to get done.
oops. When I wrote Onget into the Duslud story she was kind of a dick. It makes her even more interesting and endearing knowing how "weak" she is.

• Take a lot, a lot of screenshots. Stonesense or (if your computer can stomach it) armok vision are the best (thanks japa o/). If you can use the dfhack "markdown" command on important characters in addition, it would help me to illustrate them. Else, a screenshot of their description in game is cool too
Just unrar the file in data>saveOh no worries. I'll go
I'll just ask you to wait your turn to begin the adventure, so we can have one canon storyline, but feel free to roam around, it's good training :D
So sorry to bother you, but do you have any preference for stuff like haircut and all? Else she seems really cute. Also congratulations, your companion is the father of the king of Lumong, in the deep, deep south. He's an old man who apparently likes to travel incognito.
Truely he seems super interesting. Polite and super humble ; "I don't agree but, what do I know I'm the stupid one" while his son rules over two thousand men :D
I might take a turn next to becoma a writer. I haven't played adventurer mode in a long time, thou, so it might end badly.
My, you work fast. I'll add a bit more of the journey here until I can write it properly.
Also as a side note, with her tone of skin, Sisha probably is not a local goblina, she looks like she is of Osme upbringing. Maybe that can be a story worth telling?I was considering this very idea (especially since Thrathnu, the evil god that is, is responsible for raising the demon that rules over Osme IIRC). Though I have encountered a fair number of greyskins in the area, they are a minority.
Will the save be open for Fortress mode at any time in the future? As in weeeeeel inti the future, once the nation nphas learned stonework at least.
We sought out Ogzu's camp. Can't have anyone sending assassins after us and getting away with it.
He seemed to be alone...Spoiler: There is nothing noble about this (click to show/hide)
The story of Stran and Mudung is a greek tragedy. Never saw Mudung, but if he's on your way don't hesitate to pay him a visitSpoiler (click to show/hide)
This is hilarious. Your choices in conversation make for a wonderful overall story. And Cathar's interjections make this story waaay more intertwined than I was anticipating. If you're going to go history-diving after every name, I can see it continuing to be wacky for a long time to come.
Pretty much the whole story lol :D
Your wife is dead, your elder daughter became a war hero and married, your son became a blacksmith, Watershield was attacked violently a couple times by werebeast, interfamilial drama, battles with goblins of Osme Stobûb, attack by a legendary bronze colossus, and completion of Watershield
Okay, whew, glad it's not coming to a crashing end. Emotional well-being and avoiding overworking onesself are pretty important, too.
So as long as it's not too much stress, I'd love to learn more about the adventures of this world. It seems like a great place for people to keep exploring.
I'm nearly done. I've already made it to Watershield, but there's a few things I want to do before I finish. Then I can start working on the actual sub-plot.
Actually, they just started killing each other and ran off. I'll work it into the story.
(By the way, I was mistaken. Most goblins in the Land of Confining are gray.)
Hm, I guess I technically still have time, huh? Though I'm not sure what else there is to do for this story. I could maybe do a bit more wandering if the next player isn't ready to start.
when you're done I'll put the thread on hold for some time,
If you want to make an adventurer and record your adventures, we can do that aswell but I'll ask you to keep in close contact with me as relinquishing editorial control is not something I'll ever do again :D
Doing it properly takes far more effort than I'm used to - some 30-40 comic pages to make, and I've made 13 so far.
Small stories in the shadow of an immense war, rather than a booming, High fantasy legend of good vs. evil.
I wish so much I could find a female gorlak, marry them and have a bunch of baby gorlaks :c
But unfortunately he's one of the four civilized gorlaks in the entire world so it might be hard

Adventure hard.
Assemble the Gorlaks.
Defeat the Primal Evil.
My pleasure really :')Oh no.
I hope you guys are ready for the massive "screw everything" update of autumn 142
Yep, 25 pages. This is litterally a comic book :') And it's not done yetthank you cathar for the quality of your work.
My pleasure, it helps me to improve so I'm getting something out of that exercice ^^its okay as long as you don’t burn yourself out
Next update in... a few months (sorry)
Oh thank you :') I'm just a second grade artist who gets attached to characters easily and wants to record everything...But I'm very happy if you enjoyed the read ! This is not dead, I'm still working on it. When I'm done with the comic, we'll probably start a new fortressIf i wasn't so hopeless at learning how to dorf, I'd offer to try and set up a fort there on my own and report how I do. I do love island forts, but then again, my usual playstyle is to seal off caves whenever i encounter them in any game and just dig my own way
The islands, you mean the southern continents? That might need to take the backseat for an extended period of time, as the country is more and more locked into a war for its survival. But yeah, the little we saw about them was really interesting (with their mercenary king and their hordes of night creatures), so in the (far) future we'll have people explore those parts and establish diplomatic relations with the locals. I'm a bit worried about opening a new front with the local goblins tho, but we'll see : first we need to finish our wars at home
I love the art of the Hillock. I love the art of the fortress, too. I really like Erith, too. He’s a bit of a lancer to Islas.
In fact, I love everything. I can’t believe the amoutn of detail put into this. Thank you Cathar, thank you.
He got even fatter because all the bookkeeping increase means he had to stay at the desk (and take meals there) much, much more often ;v
let me know if anything happens with Zothoabo or the surviving members of his family. Loving the comic so far.
let me know if anything happens with Zothoabo or the surviving members of his family. Loving the comic so far.
Well, Donu started to travel, Duslud married, Zhoto is still trying to heal people. And we're bringing a wounded dwarf so he'll appear for sure. Nothing of note really happened, but as soon as some does, I'll tell you for sure
As for Dengusa, I'm afraid his line of toys will have to wait, as the Riverguard needs his talents to produce weapons of war. However two things about him :
• I really hope he'll migrate to the next fort, because training a smith is really expensive, and I like the character
• If it's not obvious by now, every sub-chapter is focused on one companion of Islas. And the next in line happens to be Dengusa's little brother. So, story time involving his family soon !
a Cook
In that case I challenge you to A COOK OFF! Acquire your pots by noon tomorrow, may the best soup win!a Cook
NEW ARCHNEMESIS FOUND!

So have those last 25 pages of little history, then we'll go back to the big, real, uppercase History.

so maybe that is the form that our fortress will take - a fortified inn on a bridge.
@Sir Knight : From left to right, the characters are
Osplek : Islas' "sister" who put a roof over his head for many years. She's a cook and a metalcrafter. Her house is located to the far west of Lemhuhqihu village
Bemta : A farmer who rescued Islas after the skirmish over Gicastenna.
Dengusa : Well I believe I don't have to introduce that one. Thomocemir's only weaponsmith, son of Asin, elder brother of Uzu
Sula : A man of very reductive size with no skill whatsoever who fled his home when he learnt Pilalene was marching over his city. When Pilalene's army was stopped, he had regrets and decided to come back to his wife.
Also don't worry ! Not only there's a chance Dengusa comes to our new fort, but we'll have migrants eitherway
Also guys don't worry, compared to Thomocemir, this fort will be much, much safer.
Gogol is the god of "it was inevitable".Gogol is the god of fun. The more you think about it the more it makes sense
Obligatory Cathar is awesome post.
Seriously, love the comic and glad to see you starting up a new fort.
I'm pretty busy right now, and don't have a lot of time to be dwarfed, but I'll keep lurking and throw together some writing if Donu or any of Zothoabo's clan migrate to the new fort. Depending on the timeframe, I may ask to be dwarfed a couple migrant waves from now.
It begins! Excited to see how this plays out. Thanks again for doing this!
Hell yeah, saw most of the pictures on dA first. Good to see the update.
Also, a nitpick on it, it's "Banditry" not "Banditism." :P
EDIT: I'm hoping there's some iron on site somewhere that can be accessed, or that the dwarves have been modded slightly to come to trade in Autumn. What I intend to draw may not make sense with copper or bronze.
Although in truth I've just found myself gravitating to this particular style of helmet in general and have yet to figure out why.
Well what I mean is when is the last time you saw a sallet made of bronze or copper? I dunno if it'd look as good in tan/brown vs light grey, hence my wondering what we'd have locally available. Since having played a metal-less embark (literally has nothing but adamantine in Battlejudge, for ore which was absolutely horrible to me at the outset, but have since learned to live with,) I can say it's way easier to be able to source locally than have to wait for caravans.
Also congrats Cathar, you got a bunch of nerds to have a discussion about armor in your thread. The mark of true success!
Strictly speaking though Cathar, you're within the right to tell me to get fucked and call me wrong in absolutely every single area since this is your show. :P
The Elves are probably going to be a worry for us in the future, if we’re to build anything at all. Human games in general are just not going to go down well with Elves. Art is incredible as always!
In the same vein : do not spam/derail. If you want to have a conversation that does not tie to the current story, please have it elsewhere. This thread is about MK and its currents happenings. Not sure whether this counts as a spam or derail? Is story-based banter (see above) allowed?

Atta girl!!
Btw, Esqu deserves the nickname 'Monkey Punch' for his heroic deed of fighting off those vermin. ; )
I wouldn't mind at all!
Would you mind if I ink/color some of those ?
Leather armor might not be great, but at least it'll keep anyone from breaking bones in training. May wanna get them set up with helmets though - I learned the heard way when some wrestling training went horribly, horribly wrong.
Can you imagine it though if we hit galena or tetrahedrite? A chiseled stone bridge of brilliant white, columns running the sides capped with gleaming silver or copper statues (one would compliment, the other contrast, both nicely I would think.) The place'd be the enevy of the kingdom I'd think.
I don’t think we’ll be going that far, though it’ll make bridge-building 1,000 times easier. We could start an industry around masonry and blocks of stone, if it became an option. We could potentially start a mining industry if there’s ore, too, though I don’t know if it’d be thematically appropriate.
Also ; I colored this drawing. Cheers !

Have there there's been any monster slayers asking to stay at your fort?
I usually get swarmed by them.
And that's not gonna be something that'd go unnoticed by other polities.Yeah, I really don't know. I know my world has mercenaries, some of them actively looking for monsters to kill. But new version monster slayers... I don't know. We'll see !
At least dwarven monster slayers can leave steel gear when they inevitably get their heads smashed open by troglodytes. That's the only reason why I would accept them into my last fort.
Cathar, you said that you thought Thomocemir had killed all the werebeasts--but there were some beasts still forgotten. Which is my lame-joke way of saying that I'd been waitin' on those!
I look forward to all sorts of tragedy from future uninvited guests. Unless the game shows a very low forgotten beast count in this world.
The corpse of the old god – Ngethac the Sinful Hex – was promtly butchered to avoid the rot, and seeing his flesh was edible, he made of the Aconilun the first human group to ever consume the flesh of a god.
The corpse of the old god – Ngethac the Sinful Hex – was promtly butchered to avoid the rot, and seeing his flesh was edible, he made of the Aconilun the first human group to ever consume the flesh of a god.
That... that should be in your sig from now on.
I mean I'd find that odd to sig myself lol. Tho... I mean why not eat it? It's dead, and we usually make crafts of forgotten beasts. Not eating it would almost be impolite ; it'd be like killing a deer and leaving it on the roadside. Totally unthinkable. We made it roast in spelt beer and it was delicious (no one complained)I love how casual you're being about the whole 'eating-a-god' situation. ;D
Also don't worry, I'm having fun. Dwarf fortress...is a lot of fun.
On the water, the protuberant exoskeleton of a bridge glows with flames.
Joakim and DengusaSpoiler: Shrinking that image into a spoiler (click to show/hide)
. . .
The second new is – we got some important new migrants. First one is De ngusa, coppersmith of Thomocemir that was already alluded to. Coppersmithing is probably one of the most respected professions of Mong Kima, due to the time and price it c osts to train an artisan to an acceptable level. Having another coppersmith, in excess of Joakim, is a true blessing, to the point we're thinking about making them a dedicated, com bined workshop with a wooden kiln and a couple of anvils, so they can work continuously.
Dengusa is the son of Asin and Apba, and therefore the grandson of Sug and Jalew. He also is, for those who followed the previous story, Uzu's elder brother. He's a competent metal crafter and weaponsmith. After failing Thomocemir's bootcamp, he reforged most of the blades of Thomocemir's knights, and altho he can improve still, is probably one of the best smiths of the country. He is curre ntly 19 years old, and his life has been quiet. The 5 october 144, he married another boy his age by the name of « The Kindled Lute »Tunul, who accompanied him to Kimaeslo Ori.
Tunul is another fine addition to our crew, as he is a former student of Zefer, which makes him a good swordsman and archer, with a lifetime of war experience.
this has been super cool and your art is amazing \ |✪ ◡ ✪| /
I haven't the time to read through fully, but that man has a glorious mustache.
Wikia is a site where you can just go and make a Wiki with basically no caveats. I’ve seen Wikias covering a Movie franchise thta only had 1 movie in it, or someone’s fictional world which s/he stole images for.
So, Zefer's life has been pretty calm since 143. He's still Thomocemir's scout captain, but with the war moving northward, Mong Kima hasn't been attacked for four years. He's probably taking some time off, and preparing for wars inevitable return. Oh, and he participated in the retributive attack against Pilalene, earning him the heroic name "Shining Surge".1.Zefer is as OP as I remember; the nickname is even better
Tho just a mini story : in the winter of year 90, an elven bard named Mimale Irularina woke up from a terrible nightmare. What she dreamt of precisely, we do not know, but it inspired her to write a "Sweet Incense" , a singed eulogy made of a collection of short poems, honoring the recently departed, originating from Xakedgil (the dominant human kingdiom of the southern island).Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Tho the name of the departed was not written, the Sweet Incense was dubbed "Aches and the Zephyrs". Mimale then went back to sleep and resumed her life as a small wandering poet. She married in year 100, and forgot about her song. She travelled around the Land of Oak and beyond, had students and lived a normal elven bardic life.
Only in year 142, as she visited the capitale city of Pilalene, she was taken in the middle of a feud between Mong Kima and her Pilalene hosts.
She joined the latter in a desperate attempt to protect Pilalene's royal family.
She engaged Zefer in a duel but received four wounds before being slain.
It is unknown if her eulogy was for herself, as the gods sent her a premonition of her death, or if its title was simply a very unfortunate coincidence.

The...baby died. I'm sorry. It drowned and we can't even recover the body. His mother's state of mind is extremely unstable :(
With that said I absolutely love the candy advert. Something in me wants to skip until modern times so we can print those candy packs. In 40 RL years, when we finally arrive at the industrial revolution, someone will launch such a brand.
As for the original seven :
• Hauben is the militia commender and starts to have serious skills, getting close to legendary territory
• Hasbun is still romantically involved with Joakim. She's the manager for the time being, but she'll be moved to the tavern when another manager emerges
• Joakim forges and decorates weapon with Dengusa as an apprentice / collegue
• Toki is still our dedicated broker and trader. Every now and then, she'd make some mastercraft trinket or meal. She's still with Gram.
• Gram stopped being an expedition leader and now is, with Jalew, desperately trying to salvage what he can from the underground (more on that later)
• Esqu took on some weight, but otherwise still continues to train the dogs. We have a lot of dogs. Some dogs we also cook and make leather from (I'm sorry)
• Bannic is now walking with a crutch, but is now our first tavern keeper, living the dream

Real update coming soon, still working on it o/
Welcome to the local administrative nobility Joakim ! Though unlike dwarven hammerers, human executionners use axes, so I'll need to give him a bit of extra training, but that's okay, Joakim is already a competent fighter and will learn new weapon in no time
So ehm, for hammerers/executionners, let's say Joakim is attacked by a goblin or wildlife while not in a squad, will he pull his axe ? Or fight barehand ? I don't think we'll be executing a lot of people anyway, but having a weapon is a survivability boon in an extreme situation.
Edit : for copper, I kind of want to use it for weapons actually. Metal is very hard to come by, I dont think there is any on this map, and we can't rely on a mood to push our smiths to legendary. So we have to craft weapons to grind experience for the smiths, and it costs a lot of ressources, especially considering blacksmithing is divided into three or four skills. And the idea of making masterwork weapons is...actually super attractive to me
I know, I'm sorry... I tried to save them, and actually managed to save some of them ; I only lost three all things considered. If I wasn't clear, they died by drowning, which explains why I couldn't manage an expedition. They were ejected to the very bottom of the first cavern by the current.Yeah, the wording made me think they went down there through an overlooked access point and got killed by something or stuck in trees. If you can get someone down there to actually confirm their deaths (after they've decomposed preferably,) at least they'll have the proper information on their headstones.
It's not that we don't care, it's just we don't want to throw more bodies at the problem. The well is a good idea, but placing it in the barracks is a recipe for disaster, as it is only a matter of time before someone dodges into it.
She soon met a gnoll by the name of Alatha
And it confirms once again, enemy archers are a pain to deal with.
That has to be the worst pun I've heard in months. And it confirms once again, enemy archers are a pain to deal with.
Nah, she was simply unluki.
Nah, she was simply unluki.pffffffft
The art style is getting better and better!
Only just realized a new update had been posted - well done my man. Thanks a lot, expect even more improvements in the next update. I've been working my style in Mount WuDang for a couple months
Had it been your intention to let Luki get old and "retire" soon, one way or another? If so, then I'm glad you managed to complete the story.I usually "go with the flow" and so do most of my characters. Luki's life mission has been completed to her eyes. I mean she did slay a dragon, you can't really top that ; and she had no interest in power nor in politics. At this point in her life, she had zero ambition left and would spend her time strolling in the forests around the interior sea. 47 years old is a bit young to die, but her life was filled, she's a part of history and she could pass on her weapon science to people, so she'll live on like that
Maybe "gnoll" just means "hyena man" in this case? Would fit in with Cathar's fondness for flavouring vanilla DF elements in ways that make them seem more cohesive and interesting.Yes, exactly. That's precisely what I'm doing.
Farewell, Luki :'(
It was a long way for her to go and I’d say she finished it as well as she lived!
Loved the story of revenge you had weaved here, does make situation more dramatic for both sides of conflict.
And it confirms once again, enemy archers are a pain to deal with.
-Yes, i know. Hauben ended up looking like an early DBZ villain.
Also sorry about the Street Fighter reference. >__>°
the art is awesome :P
-Yes, i know. Hauben ended up looking like an early DBZ villain.
Also sorry about the Street Fighter reference. >__>°
I don't understand how's this a problem, especially that the art is awesome :P
I also hear about not invading, but...we really ough to. We need to reconquer Tetzobsha and if possible retake some other territories lost during the war, and since we can train a lot of people who would otherwise go berserk in Kimaeslo Ori, I really thing we should - bug or not. We can keep Hauben and his squad in defense tho
If the goal is strict conquest with people we'll never see again or care about, then I *do* support a war of reconquest. Can even spin it as the leadership sending people to us for the express purpose of raising a new army in (relative) safety.Well yeah, the goal would be to negate the "chip damage" the country gets over time from its immediate enemies (Osme in the east and Pilalene in the west). Most of the time, Mong Kima repels the enemy with little loss, but sometimes we lose a city on a bad roll, and we can never get it back if we're not proactive.
I remember seeing this thread in the catalogue a while ago and thinking nothing of it. But seeing its staying power, and after opening it, the fantastic art, I decided to give it a read. Cathar, your art is amazing and your storytelling is enthralling. I may not post much, but I never really leave, so I hope you continue this wonderful story.
Reading much earlier in the thread, I noticed that bright red hair was uncommon but present among the humans of Mong Kima. Could I request a human with red hair be nicknamed "Flame" after the bright color of their hair?
Wow. Agh!
I'm torn between two reactions:
1. No, such terrible things for my character!
2. What's important here is this: did I name the slaying weapon??
I see that a real vote here is too late, but I suppose I'd go with the justice thing. To a large extent because I really like seeing those systems used in-game. I haven't yet had accidental deaths from justice . . . though I have had a potential recipient of justice kill the one delivering the justice before it could be done.
Also, I feel like I may need to go back through all the art and keep copies of scenes where I appeared. This sort of thing delights me. (P.S.: This update, again, was a delight.)
I mean... okay ? I really don't want to go on yet another "this is not a written kruggsmash video" explanation. You don't have to help if you don't want to help. That's ok; I'll manage, promise. Not trying to start a fight, but he wasn't trying to compare it to one. He was saying the world is apparently bland and uninteresting by DF standards of crazy shit happening - although to be frank, multiple wars in-progress and the repeated werebeast attacks suggest otherwise at least in my opinion. If nothing else there seems to be a plague of apostasy/unchecked monsters/stupidity abounding with those weres still menacing the countryside.
I've looked through quite a bit of legends, and I've come to a conclusion:The world was also genned with mostly-vanilla files (I think I read somewhere Cathar only did the minimum to make humans playable,) and I'm assuming the world was generated with pop caps, in which case insane/super interesting stuff is simply less likely to happen anyway because populations are limited to draw on for victims, perpetrators, and armies. The super-modded, no-cap worlds I gen at minimum tend to be rife with at least a couple extermination wars and plenty of megabeast/semi-megabeast attacks, and I usually only run a world for between 190 and 240 years - not really all that much longer.
This world isn't all that interesting.
Pretty much all the interesting history is stuff you've already wrote about. 125 years of worldgen isn't very long, the world isn't very big, and the world was generated before a lot of the interesting legends stuff got put in. There are no vampire tyrants, colossal battles, conquering generals, or legendary heroes. I've always been more of a historian in my approach to legends rather than a storyteller, and this world has me stumped.
Wow, I feel honored.
To be more thorough: I felt a chill looking at the initial "justice" illustration. I presumed I was about to be executed. The fact that the whole scenario continued on, and involved more and more people, is wild. And I thank you for allocating so much update to these things.
Awesome to see such high-quality weaponry, too. Dunno why I'd go about decorating spears; that's just the sort of thing that makes me turn off settings and manage various stockpiles in my forts. ("Put down that spear and start decorating craft goods, darn it!")
And I'm quite concerned about the apparent mental breakdown that the whole town is having. The updated mental simulation seems to mean that an emotional catastrophe is less of a blunt hammer destroying a game as it is an alarming and hard-to-fight menace.

The Skull-breakers Emblem, a fractured skull, mace, and morningstar. There's only one way for a maceman to score an instant kill after all.[...] All of these are designed as door decorations, though simplified forms can be applied to shields, bucklers, and maybe body armor.
I've read through this whole thread again over the last few days. I love this story! The combination of the broad sweep of history, with the details of the lives of the people who get caught up in it.
I gotta admit, the bit about the book about happiness got a good chuckle out of me.
No words will really work to assuage what is likely to happen. All that can be said, or asked, is that you, the soldiers of Kimaeslo Ori, fight like the devils I'm sure some among this green vermin believes we Pearlites to be. If we and our home are to burn and die, then so be it. We struck down many of the children of Pasmug, we struck down the old and forgotten gods in the depths, and we struck down the Lord of the Forest itself, to say nothing of the many enemy warriors whose corpses already litter the woods around our home who thought themselves our betters.
All of these, among so many other achievements, are why it has been nothing but a great privilege to lead you all in battle.
And I have no doubts that you, my brothers and sisters in arms, will ensure our home does not go quietly. That we will drag yet more with us into the howling darkness that awaits.
Next update will be the last of the fort, gentlemen... The fort ends abruptly at the beggining of Fall with a massive russian style cavalry attack from Osme.
Hauben if you want to make a speech it's now or never because basically everyone dies
I don't know what we'll do after Kimaeslo Ori, either go back to adventuring or start a new world...I don't know but I'll be open to suggestions. Somehow this game felt much, much harder than Thomocemir, altho I was more experienced and had a much better setting.
It's perfect, I'll tinker if need be, but I really want people to add something to the story...and yeah, that's the last opportunity for this chapter.

Also Haspen don't worry ! You have a couple of week before that post ! It aint over until it's over (but soon)
Speaking of which, we'll probably make a more peaceful embark this time, in the middle of the kingdom, to create a bridge city where the interior sea gets narrow, in order to facilitate trade between the two sides of the kingdom. . . .
Also, if you have an idea for a name ? I'm thinking something like Peace Harbor or the like.
I kind of would prefer to stay here...but maybe this is time to start something more serious than Mong Kima in terms of realisation.
In fairness to it, there's nothing that inherently makes Dwarf Fortress-related stuff utterly alien to a wider audience, especially with how you present it here. If you didn't tell someone, they might not otherwise make the connection between the work and the game - partially because you chose humans over dwarves to play as and present the perspective of.I'm with Splint. Your presentation is good enough for any audience. No matter what you decide, I'll still read whatever you create.
Dwarven steel, clearly would help us a lot.
Can you describe in precise terms the process to make the dwarves visit? I don't like to alter the files, but if you insure me it's safe and guide me through the process, why not.
As for war with the dwarves...we're already in it. Desor Uzol are attacking Thomocemir a couple time but were rebuffed - and their officers are still in Thomocemir's prison.
[PROGRESS_TRIGGER_POPULATION:1] - These first three dictate when they come to trade. Trigger 1 is very low, like 20 people and only a few thousand in wealth creation or exports.

[PROGRESS_TRIGGER_POP_SIEGE:3] - These three dictate when they might come to attack you if you wrong them or they declare war on their own. 3 is basically the standard for some enemies, as trigger 3 is for an equivalence of 80 dudes living somewhere, though I dunno if it's 80 adults or 80 people in general.

Takru was still an Osmite soldier, even tho she was working for Islas and Takru. Probably - when she saw the queen of pearls, something in her screamed that she should seize the occasion and murder the old lady.I think something's wrong with this sentence.

This was probably my most intense Adventurer quest ever. And I am very very satisfied with the outcome.

Then, there was another incident – the wooly yak bull that was brought to pull the cart a couple months ago, escape from its pasture and before Figaro could catch him back, had mounted every single elven yak cow. Calves would then be birthed during the winter – their status and ownership extremely uncertain.

But damn am I glad that little fix worked, cause that page with the dwarf merchant was genuinely funny to me.Haha, so am I. Now we can make actual progress

This will not be the first time this thread is necroed...This time I took a big, big hiatus to refine my craft.
But now I miss my little people and I want to spend a few in game years with them before I move on to more serious project. So maybe a couple more updates coming soon.
Thanks to everyone taking the time of reading my prose.
Good to see you back! : )
Even after all this time, i'm still really invested in the fate of the pearlites.
I hope the dwarven 'magic metal' will tip the scales in their favor!
Cool! Thank you for further illustration of this fun stuff. And if you're going to tackle something different in the future, I'd be glad to see it, too.
Very nice word-crafting, Cathar, keep us up to date with the goings-on of our favourite wanderers.
Pictures are awesome as well.
I'm just glad to see updates :)
Ahaha, beautiful. Neat to see which bits you streamline for smoother narrative, too.
'Does it bite' ? Histamine asked, pointing at the grizzly bear.
-'Of course!' the merchant smiled. 'And it claws, and it mauls!'
It was quickly bought and given to Figaro.
The good new is most people who are burried alive soon become burried dead, making it a self-correcting problem I suppose.
Still it leaves a sour taste in my mouth, but we can't leave a town as big as Edetledir unexploited.
Next step is re-investing the network of dwarven fortresses that have fallen to little Osmite warlords in the area between south Mong Kima and Osme. We will need bigger forges, and more weapon instructors, that's for sure.
And when our pieces are well secured (in a number of years) we'll take the fight to Osme proper.
Lesno nodded bovinely.
Kiseabo' was born in Thomocemir in 134, twenty years ago
I wonder if Kaos should do some militia training and claim the long sword for himself . . . . . after making a toy sarcophagus for her ladyship.(https://i.imgur.com/NVWqGM2.png)
Lesno nodded bovinely.Bwa ha ha ha.
I can't get over the 'pasturing of Lesno' part.(https://i.imgur.com/J5kIcqb.png)
'Hey Lesno! You are part of the herd now!'
-'Is that what you call your fellow townsmen?'
'Nope. Start grazing right over there!'
Very, very happy to see this back! : )
Sorry to hear about the lemons, are you okay now?
-Can it be? The Pearlites will finally start their counterattack?
All glory to Mong Kima!!
Lovely art and writing as always! Don't worry about timeliness - someday, future readers will come across this topic and read it from end to end, and speed won't matter to them.
Hell yeah, monkey murder. Only thing worse than thieving wretches like that are keas and only because they fly. The region's better off without them. Can't they just like pick berries like any other non sapient primate ? Ah, we'll make furcoats out of them.
Time to paint a tiny monkey skull on my armour, then, it's just 11 more for the collection . . . . . . . . .
<snip>Time to paint a tiny monkey skull on my armour, then, it's just 11 more for the collection . . . . . . . . .
Maybe I can design a 12-monkey theme statue to put on your house, for when you'll leave the boot camp and return to civilian life?
30 is quite a lot, and personally I only had one fort pass that mark, so congratulations (on both that, and the raid)!
Why are those food stocks so low, it makes me nervous :P
Flawless victory!!
(I remember how wrong my first raid went. *shudder*)
That chart about debt, how did you look that up?
"It's important to remember that Pearlites, generally, don't enjoy killing. However, when done in good cause to one's kith and kin it is often seen as just another job to be done. And the reason our training policies might be seen as harsh at times to other Pearlite communities is simple: Practiced hands make for short work."
Boy, those gobos never waste any time retaliating, do they?
Also went better than expected!
Cathar, i like how you balance out which parts of your story you draw.
You could have easily just picked to draw battles, and written the rest in text.
Also, stellar work as always!
Hooray, updates! Hooray, war stories!
Also, the bridge after all this construction is looking preeeetty.
Yes, we can ! Although non metallic armors are really untrustworthy in battle (their use is probably why we lost the town last time), we might have to resort to them as they are still better than nothing. But even in that case, we'll replace them asap.
In other news, Winter 155 has been played. And a LOT of things happened. It's a big bad mixed bag of experimentations, problems and discoveries fitting into each others like a tetris WR, and Kaos is involved more than once. Totten and Ralin also will have some screentime
If we were able, I'd recommend tighter enlistment requirements (mainly preferring those with the ability to handle stress better than average) but that's probably not the most practical course of action.
Exhaustion can take even the strongest warrior, dwarven iron or no. Perhaps it's time to field a contingent of war animals, to draw away the blows of the enemy. Even dogs could help, in sufficient numbers.
That map is particularly beautiful I just wanna say

It really is, gotta agree.

The queen! Raids! Fun things to come! Let's hope your raids don't bug out your military...
Glad to see this story is still going strong. Loved popping in for another peak at the humans of Mong Kima.Hey Megaman, long time no see ! Most of Zhotoabo's family is still in Thomocemir...but Kiseabo, the kid you named, is now an adult and is our barkeeper.
Next update may take some time as fall 156 was very violent
So . . . the bridge doesn't count as a megaproject??
yeah, some stuff really isn't going wellThe long and the short is : I'm hoping against hope that the concerned people will realize that their actions color how we are collectively perceived, start to weight the gravitas of their responsabilities and act like adults in the future. That's something that may happen after all. In case it doesn't, I'll prepare a raft for myself because I'm not sinking with the ship.
kudos for taking it this far, that's no easy feat.
So . . . the bridge doesn't count as a megaproject??
Only if he puts a giant bronze construction over it with each leg on different side of the bridge a la Colossus of Rhodes :P
A large fortification built out of living quarters. Somewhere between a castle and an apartment building.
How about a super opulent pyramid for the queen?
Too dwarvenFlame gets it
Ahahahaha that meme is perfect (if slightly out of taste from some points of view.)
I dunno. it's late, ignore me.We need a treasure room that's for sure, but I can't imagine it to be outside the palace. I've been thinking, directly under the roof.
Just a small message to tell people I am not dead, the fort is still ongoing, a new update soon.

I like ironic names so maybe Mila for the cat?
Romanian for mercy which is something the goblin surely lacked and was doomed for.
Thankfully such situations are rare.Yeah, morale is surprizingly good. We had problems with Iwo earlier, he was given an exile as a punishment. But now the whole clan Asin is giving us cause, and this is very unfortunate as I really like them
On the positive end, good to see the campaign going favorably. The loss of their villages is setting them back a couple decades in their invasion project, and will severely impede their ability to replenish their forces. The conquest will take time, but until we reach fort Stustonako, we'll only meet soft targets, so expect easy victories soon !
Are is very pretty! It's a shame what happened with her... Also, the palace is looking great!Thank you !
"We never replace great people when they leave our lives, but sometimes by their absence we are able to more clearly see those whose star light was obscured previously"Alas...But you're right. And Uzu is not dead after all. We might meet him again in the future.
My consolation when I lose favorite citizens
Have you thought about a bath floor for nobility? Fountains for the waterfall pleasure and if it is shallow enough(its either 3 or 4 deep) they can actually learn to swim rather than just drownYes, to my despair, we did try to make a traditional public bath in the past, but multiple blunders had us consider a safer design with just publiw ells and soap bars (just next to the palace). Working with water is extremely dangerous, and since we're above ground in a temperate region, it will freeze in winter, killing the swimmers. After losing a couple workers we just gave up the idea. It's alright though, the noblemen can still wash themselves in the public - well - showers.
Also kinda makes me imagine "pearl-iron" as a human-made version of steel using sea shells and such for flux instead of calcium-based stone. Might be a neat little thing to add for modding something someday.
If the vagrants are standing still, could you build cage traps under them? Or are they marked as friendly and thus immune? No they are written as hostile, so it may work ! I'll try that then !
Seeing this pop up in unread messages is a happy occassion no matter the update or delays, Cathar, a testament to your skills in art and storytelling :3Thanks Haspen. I resent that life has prevented me from taking care of my little village especially in its times of troubles. Mong Kima is still my most precious pet project
The only reason that mugger is still alive is likely because Totten was off-duty from the sound of things. my experience with such matters tells me if she were on active duty she'd have probably smashed his skull in an instant, if he was lucky
similar things planned for the nobility of Mong Kima at this point.Oh we know what they do to us when there's nothing to stop them, since the first fall of Kimaeslo Ori. They just murder everyone.
And man, I love your depictions of the bronze colossi. Not sure what it is about them. It's a bit inspired by castle in the sky. Except they are soulless murder machines.
It's cool seeing the world come together and also for the city to turn into a trade center. Does this world have caverns? I'm imagining a dreadful scarcity of wood forcing the humans to delve and strip the caves of fungi wood.Oh it does, but during our first attempt at this fort, we breached an aquifer and it's now partially flooded. There is wood underground, but it's too dangerous to be exploited now.
Tweak makeownSo, the good new is : it works ! The bad news is : it's not the end of the story ! Fanu will still cause problems for a short while. More on that next update.
is the dfhack command I use it when animal people show up at my forts because I like to collect them
An excellent year as always. You should set up some cage traps near choke points or around the edge of the map. That might net you some animals or even megabeasts to tame.
iirc, megabeasts are trapavoid, so they will ignore any traps, unless you knock them unconscious while they are standing on the trap. You're thinking of forgotten beasts and titans. My Roc collection begs to differ on megabeasts.
I do remember very clearly having caged a bronze colossus a couple forts ago, back in Thomocemir. Don't forget our raws are very old ! All our megabeasts, including titans and FB, but also demons, angels, dragons, BC, etc, have stats generated 7 years ago
... That said you may need to make beak dogs or something useable as pack animals for them to be able to deliver any offerings, even if said offerings are token gestures of submission to the more militarily powerful entity. ...

47.05 goblins are capable of taming both evil-aligned animals and cave animals without trouble. Beak dogs don't appear to be considered pack animals; however, is it possible that anything else in that list might be something goblins have access to? (Although it's plenty easy to make the civilization templates-of-sorts that the game uses override the default behavior of animals, 47.05 goblins don't do that by themselves - they would need to be modded to.)
(For the purposes of modding, "cave animals" are defined as creatures appearing exclusively in subterranean biomes. "Evil animals" are evil-aligned creatures with [SLOW_LEARNER] or without [CAN_LEARN], and the token allowing a civilization to use this definition of evil animals also lets them use the creatures in question even if they otherwise can't be tamed.)
I don't remember if I said this before, but weight counts for a lot in offscreen battles. Any large war animal is great on a raid.
You might wanna leave one goblin pit alive and occupied when you assault the dark fortress.
It takes nothing less than a legendary leader to even stand a chance at winning the dark fortress battle and your captains grind leadership exp by leading missions such as pillaging.
Keep one alive as a leadership grinding zone
I don't remember if I said this before, but weight counts for a lot in offscreen battles. Any large war animal is great on a raid.
Absolutely. There's been plenty of reports where dwarves brought pet yaks and cattle on offensive actions and they proved to be rather mighty creatures due to their bulk.Grizzlys are definitely better than dogs in attack, but are not very lethal. They usually leave their opponents missing several body parts but alive. Some of the duels between grizzlys and goblins were actually lost by the grizzly, but when it happened, the bear could retreat safely (while the "victor" was left a couple kilos lighter).
The unassigned building on the bridge could be turned into an exhibition hall, where local craftsmen/women put their wares on display, and could also be an opportunity for them to recruit apprentices. Musicians/bards could also work here to entertain guests with ambient music. We can totally do a small museum yes !
